I think the album is fine for what it is but a pretty poor use of this band and Hayley William's vast skill set. It definitely doesn't sound like it should be huge to me, the charts weren't really clamoring for a bunch of polyrhymic 80s throwbacks. Most of it just feels kinda silly and disposable to me; it doesn't have the heft or longevity of the three albums before it.

I'm still hoping there are a bunch of outtakes from these sessions that eventually see daylight. I respect that they opted to make a fairly tight record, but after the four year wait between albums this just feels slight and incomplete to me

this record is perfect and your life is in shambles, friend

lol that video!

Spottie, Saturday, 18 November 2017 01:23 (six years ago) link

it's a good album but was under-promoted and feels more like their indie album than their pop album so the performance isn't surprising

ufo, Saturday, 18 November 2017 02:26 (six years ago) link

It could been promoted 24 hours a day in 2017 and it wouldn't have made a difference. These songs don't fit formats.

two weeks pass...

Anybody seen this tour? Weird moment from last night's show: Zac sang a song about Scooby during the encore, and the crowd seemed totally lost. Couldn't quite understand what was going on.

I was bummed they didn't do "Now." "Fake Happy" and "Ain't it Fun" killed though

Evan R, Saturday, 2 December 2017 19:31 (six years ago) link

it's a halfnoise (zac's band) song

New Hayley interview! This podcast focuses on beauty/makeup and Hayley's on there to promote her latest GoodDyeYoung product, but she talks a lot of Paramore as well.. About halfway through they get DEEP into skincare products which I found interesting but is alien territory for me so I haven't finished the ep yet. But she has a good rapport with the interviewer. The conversation feels honest and open and friendly and not very press junket-ish, which some of the other AL-cycle interviews suffer from.

I want to know what Taylor does to keep his hair so awesome.

Rose Colored Boy video out soon, with a hopefully more satisfying amount of Taylor York hair than the last vid, for Alfred's sake.

omg

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 5 February 2018 16:26 (six years ago) link

i was literally just thinking yesterday, "they should put out 'rose-colored boy' as a single. it won't go anywhere but they should do it anyway"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Monday, 5 February 2018 16:26 (six years ago) link

seeing them live a few weeks ago revved up my appreciation of this album. "Rose-Colored Boy" is now my favorite song on the album

oh & they walked on just after blasting "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" & the crowd sang along in full voice; then they left to "I Wanna Dance With Somebody". this all makes sense I think

I have no idea if people actually listen to this band. Was this album a hit? A flop? Have they toured behind it? Just festivals? Clearly they are still releasing singles.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 20:39 (six years ago) link

it was a flop, they have toured and are touring behind it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 6 February 2018 20:40 (six years ago) link

And yet, pretty sure they never hit Chicago! I mean, they might have been at Riot Fest? But I was shocked they never played a standalone show here, if that was it.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 20:42 (six years ago) link

Seems like it was a flop in the Melodrama sense, where maybe it underperformed a bit commercially but it was also enormously well-received and probably cemented their fanbase for many, many years to come.

Saw their winter show (sold out, I think) and the good will for the band was just through the roof.

Evan R, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:02 (six years ago) link

yeah i was less worried about their health as a band after seeing them on this tour (at a sold out radio city). i think after "still into you" and "ain't it fun" were big pop hits that really leaning hard into that direction made sense... but given how hard it is for any rock band to get consistent traction in pop i'm also not surprised it didn't catch. will be interesting to see where they go next having given this route their best effort.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:49 (six years ago) link

apropos of nothing "Forgiveness" reminds me of The Orb's "Star 6 7 8 9" or whatever it was called

Taylor looking less like a dapper young emissary of pop and new wave and more like everyone I went on Phish tour with. When album 6 rolls around in uh, 2021, I'm predicting jammy elements.

how's life, Thursday, 15 February 2018 13:17 (six years ago) link

You have exactly an hour to retract.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 15 February 2018 13:24 (six years ago) link

lol, it would never happen. I could see them adding more psych pop elements to their sound though. Dude loves his pedals.

how's life, Thursday, 15 February 2018 13:49 (six years ago) link

meanwhile I'm pleased they're obsessed with "Seven Wonders" too.
