I don't get it, is there any cost to the 'rater' of rating the server?

yeah, it's definitely evil but also makes no sense? I'm sticking with Bodega Box for my startup dollars.

They should have focused on CEOs. Their cryptocurrency could function both as a review and as a replacement for bonuses and stock options, and would follow CEOs to their next job in the CEO gig economy.

Today the Trump administration took their first major step towards allowing employers to legally take tips earned by the workers they employ. https://t.co/bs6qMHHj7G

"I'd rather spend that money on other things"

Oy vey. Yes I'd rather not spend ANY money when I get goods or services, but livinginaSOCIETYcostanza.gif.
Actually I feel the exact opposite of her: I'm never going to miss an extra dollar or 2 I tipped someone, whereas the cumulative extra dollar from every customer is going to be a significant amount for a server.

‘you chose that profession’

the service industry: it’s a calling, not a grinding, degrading hellscape of shit-eating you hope one day to claw your way free from

If someone is willing to give you quotes like that you should not let them remain anonymous.

When James dines out, which he does a few times a week, he says he plays a rounding game with the bill at the end of the meal. “I will add a few dollars and round it to an even number, say a $36.87 meal being tipped $3.13 to make $40.00,” he explains. “This isn’t because I want to tip, it just gives me a little mental math game and I like even numbers.”

I remember distinctly once while bartending, these douchebros came into my bar in blyn (at the time they were out of place) and the guy stared me right in the eye as he took the round of drinks back to his table without leaving a tip. Like, daring me to say something. This happened every single time he came up to the bar. It was early evening and I was tending by myself so there wasn't much I could do. At least it was just bottle beer.

Yerac, Friday, 27 July 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

used to have hangover anxiety in my early 20s. did I say something untoward or act like a jerk last night at the bar?

in my old age, now I seldom have that anxiety, but when I do it's usually me worrying that I fucked up the tip when paying the tab and some bartender is shaking her fist and vowing vengeance when she goes through the night's receipts

It’s sort of a reverse prisoner’s dilemma where if everyone agrees at once to stop doing it then things would be better but if you just do it because you feel like it, you’re not exactly *galaxy brain* you’re just being a dick.

devops mom (silby), Saturday, 28 July 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link

ok she is also wrong re just feeling like it but hey theres no wrong way to be right

in fact i cant figure if my main view of ilx is that its found all the right ways to be wrong, all the wrongs ways of being right, or whether we're all just fellow travellers in a cruel world but some have better movie recommendations

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Saturday, 28 July 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link

Anyway the way to the end of tipping in the USA, already in progress, is through establishments going explicitly tipless and adding service charges. No way is having brave consumers stiff servers out of principle an act of solidarity.

xp ilx is mostly where we take opinions we learned on Twitter and try them out on a small audience before going wide with it

devops mom (silby), Saturday, 28 July 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

wait

why do *we* have a sandbox then

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Saturday, 28 July 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

not all progress happens thru solidarity

(sorry hoos im sorry im sorry)

also is the service charge a stepping stone towards "the price is the price" because even listing service charge is a sad excuse of responsibility for running a business imo

dele alli my bookmarks (darraghmac), Saturday, 28 July 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

i have my own methodology for assessing how much to tip

if you don't want to tip, you shouldn't have to, though

i hold nothing against those people

the current system of tipping in north america is not good though

F# A# (∞), Saturday, 28 July 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

I mean I hate tipping too and wish the US would completely do away with it, but I don't believe in dicking over service people for me to make a point and which also benefits me that I get to keep my money. On my fb feed at least, it's all the white women in top tier US cities who are going bonkers about anyone "messing with their money" (talking about doing away with the tip system).

Yerac, Saturday, 28 July 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link

The US is just basically impossible, because you can't even talk about changing most things when healthcare is so expensive and wrapped up in employers. And who cares when workers may no longer be entitled to their tips anyway.

Yerac, Saturday, 28 July 2018 19:51 (five years ago) link

No. The way to end tipping is to vote in living wages for everyone, one jurisdiction at a time, or a national living wage law that doesn’t allow for local exemptions for tipped employees. The latter won’t hold up in court, though, because our federal judiciary branch is being packed with drooling idiot right-wing stooges, so let’s go with the former. Of course, machine politicians like my local fucking city council members will try and kill any living wage ballot initiatives that do pass, so we need to replace them as well. But deems is right, we choose to live in this system, just like front-of-house staff choose to do that job.

Also anybody who thinks I get my opinions from Twitter will be punched in the neck and genitals.

I mean I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would appear to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. If you show me a piece of paper that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it. Put it to a vote, I'll vote for it. But what I won't do is play ball. And this non-college bullshit you're givin' me, I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.

i love tipping now that i can afford it. usually i do 20% but with Uber or whatever i will leave a $5 tip on a $13 ride.

everyone should have to work a job at some point in their lives where their pay is directly related to appeasing the customers. there should be a draft for the service industry.
