'DNA' by miles.

'Despacito' and 'Shape of You' can both go and fuck right off.

"unforgettable" for me

dyl, Friday, 24 November 2017 23:24 (six years ago) link

Didn't realize "Redbone" was that popular

billstevejim, Friday, 24 November 2017 23:57 (six years ago) link

Migos is the only one of these I know I've heard so that one

ciderpress, Friday, 24 November 2017 23:58 (six years ago) link

I assumed T-Shirt and Bodak Yellow were way more popular than some of these.

What, no “Cheap Thrills”?

"believer" is the worst of these, red state music for future wife abusers

i have a weird affection for "body like a back road" which I'm going to vote for. "it ain't me" is lovely imo, tho i didn't really go for the rest of selena gomez in 2017. i will stan for "i don't wanna live forever" but this really cheesy eurohouse remix with fake vocals. i thought "there's nothing holdin' me back" might be on here, i dig that one.

map, Saturday, 25 November 2017 00:50 (six years ago) link

if bodak yellow were on here i would vote for that in a heartbeat

map, Saturday, 25 November 2017 00:51 (six years ago) link

I've heard maybe four of these songs, and you can guess which.

Voted for Drake because why not

according to this slide of the 'hitmakers' feature this list is linked to, "bodak yellow" was 'days from entering the top 30', meaning the song broke too late in their data collection period, which only goes up to november 2nd. most of the songs on this list took off in spring or earlier.

dyl, Saturday, 25 November 2017 01:25 (six years ago) link

interesting to see "goosebumps" on this list -- it had a long chart run but never even broke the top 30

also "dna" is unique on this list in that, despite charting well, it never achieved broad acceptance at any radio format (altho the station in my city played it a lot, which i enjoyed)

dyl, Saturday, 25 November 2017 01:35 (six years ago) link

There are six that I am able to call to mind when I read the title. Of them, "Mask Off" is easily my favourite; "Bad and Boujee" #2. (Based on my guitar teaching experience, Imagine Dragons was popular with teenage girls in Ottawa suburbs so idk if I buy "red state music for future wife abusers"; not a fan of the song, though).

How is fucking "Closer" by the fucking Chainsmokers not on this fucking list of hit shit where it belongs?

Future
American rapper

map, Monday, 27 November 2017 15:25 (six years ago) link

i always sorta liked sadcore mumbling rappers but i never thought they'd dominate the charts. seems weird.

treeship 2, Monday, 27 November 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

It's more that (I can't vouch for da kidz in the UK), while I've heard Mask Off on the radio here, it's hardly ubiquitous and trap artists just aren't close to becoming household names over here. It dumbfounds me that a band like Migos are quite so famous over there. Also 'Mask Off', even by Future's standards is a fairly nothingy song.

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Monday, 27 November 2017 16:08 (six years ago) link

are any of these songs gleeful and triumphant like hey ya or call me maybe? it seems like a strange collection for a list of hits.

mask off sounds like a genre/era encapsulating beauty and it's been haunting me with differing connotations all throughout the year. pretty good for a nothingy song

gospodin simmel, Monday, 27 November 2017 16:36 (six years ago) link

The Coldplay x Chainsmokers song is gleeful but in a stupid, annoying way. Not in that fun ‘Hey ya’ and ‘call me maybe’ way.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 27 November 2017 16:37 (six years ago) link

Oh how I hate those doo-doo-doos and Chris Martin.

I'm amazed that songs like 'Mask Off' can be so popular in the States.

'Mask Off' is #13 in the equivalent list for UK Spotify. To give you some context that's two below 'Galway Girl' and four above the Harry Styles single. It's huge here.

Matt DC, Monday, 27 November 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

coldplay + chainsmokers song is really good

brimstead, Monday, 27 November 2017 17:06 (six years ago) link

i can't deal with it. the logic song hitting big is peak 'we are all depressed'

map, Monday, 27 November 2017 17:09 (six years ago) link

“Hey Ya” best resumed by its own lyrics:

Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 27 November 2017 17:16 (six years ago) link

It’s probably my favorite self-conscious lyrics of all time. It’s very meta as if Andre already knew it would be a huge hit and people would dance to it without paying attention to the bleak lyrics.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 27 November 2017 17:26 (six years ago) link

Wait hang on, where's 'Look What You Made Me Do' in this list?

Matt DC, Monday, 27 November 2017 17:35 (six years ago) link

xp to map: yeah, it shouldn't be overlooked that the title of one of the 25 most listened to songs of the year is the number for the Suicide Prevention Hotline!

my vote goes to "I Feel It Coming" b/c that's by far the one I've listened to on purpose the most

released too late to make it this year and likely too frontloaded to make it next year

i feel it coming, cemented as a classic when i finally heard the daft punk instrumental

"Redbone" isn't even the best song on that album but probably the one that wears out its welcome soonest.

DigitalDjigit, Saturday, 9 December 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

I had to go with "Bad & Boujee" because I definitely listened to it the most. "Humble", "Goosebumps", "Bounce Back" and "Mask Off" were contenders. "Wild Thoughts" too just because of Rihanna.

DigitalDjigit, Saturday, 9 December 2017 18:12 (six years ago) link
