Actually, "Alice" at times reminds me a tiny bit of The Bees Made Honey..., namely the desolate French horn outro. More jazz than Morricone, but the same feel.

A. Begrand, Friday, 15 May 2009 02:09 (fifteen years ago) link

ok didnt go to gojira because i suck, but in one hour i will be seeing Wolves In The Throne Room, Krallice, Zebulon Pike, and Empires.

Panzer Division Marduk LP is definitely one of my prized possessions.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 16 May 2009 01:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Random download with the most staying power in my iTunes rotation lately: Antigua and Barbua's Try Future. Bad name, interesting band, vaguely like what you might get if a younger Muse decided to make a black-metal record...

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 16 May 2009 03:01 (fifteen years ago) link

are you trying to recommend it to us

(b)admin (roxymuzak), Saturday, 16 May 2009 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link

um so if this show in any form gets to your town, GO!

both Krallice and WITTR were fucking top notch, unbelievable show A++++++

empires and zebulon pike were great as well, but fairly sure they were just a TC option

Hmm Moonsorrow and Primordial were both excellent, but also heavy on the pomp and cheese factors. Korpiklaani... I just don't get it.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 16 May 2009 10:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, I'm liking the H&H record a lot. It's certainly true that it could have been faster, but given the non-shortage of other, faster, bands, I think their decision to go heavy is just fine. That plus the new Candlemass is a good year in old-school metal in just two albums...

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 16 May 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the new Candlemass outclasses the H&H by a considerable margin.

Korpiklaani... I just don't get it.

They're so much fun, the crowd on Monday just ate it up. Though like someone else said, their bassist looks uncannily like a garden gnome.

A. Begrand, Sunday, 17 May 2009 05:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I just bought the double LP H&H. Must compare it to Candlemass side by side, but there are definitely some lyrics on Death Magic Doom that are as silly as anything Dio ever wrote.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 17 May 2009 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

My Q&A with Marduk guitarist Morgan Hakansson.

unperson, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Nice. I'm way more excited to see Marduk than Mayhem.

Nate Carson, Monday, 18 May 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

It's not the band who made the flyer btw, its some stupid kid on viva la vinyl who made it. Not a bright idea.

i might even go so far as to say silly

I made the flyer.
I was "going for" silly.
I don't think it glorifies Nazis anymore than it glorifies book burning or an image of a dead body on a flier (e.g., a "victim of a bombraid") glorifies war.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

idiot

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

jesus.

glad bone awl have nothing to do with that. was just jamming em yesterday.

original bgm, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

well theres been rumours about bone awl for a while. So fuck knows. I have an lp and tape of theirs so id be gutted if they really were into it

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

never heard those rumors about bone awl myself, but yeah, that would suck.

original bgm, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

"I was "going for" silly."?

Well, you missed, you stupid wee shite. How about a trip to the nearest old folks home to meet someone with personal knowledge of that kind of silly? It's not like you shouldn't have known how that kind of imagery has been used in BM circles.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 20:26 (fourteen years ago) link

you would be better posting that on vlv so the guy who did the flyer can see it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 20 May 2009 20:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Not sure what's worse, the idiot that put the flyer together, or the asshat on that thread that offered tips to give it more of a "wp" feel.

Wow, tomorrow night's Mayhem/Marduk show just got better; turns out Cattle Decapitation's playing the last gig of their tour with Gwar that night, so they won't be on the bill. They join the Blackenedfest lineup the next night, in Baltimore. Yay!

unperson, Wednesday, 20 May 2009 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

never heard those rumors about bone awl myself, but yeah, that would suck.

i've never heard word one about them having any kind of dubious politics. i think early on they used the same skull insignia death in june used? but other than that, if they're nazis or whatever, they seem to go to great lengths to hide it - their cover art and lyrical concerns would seem to indicate an interest in obscure archaeology/paleontology and henry darger...

YAWNN 0))) (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 21 May 2009 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link

No, I've read nothing of that kind either. My impression is that the fascist tendency in BM are quite upfront that that's what they're all about - you don't see that coyness that you get in industrial music.

Be interested to hear if there's any reaction from Bone Awl, or any of the other bands on the flier. The kvlt thing is always to say nothing, of course, but this kind of crap will follow a band around.

Soukesian, Thursday, 21 May 2009 10:14 (fourteen years ago) link

in better news, i get to go see krallice and wolves in the throne room tonight. super excited!

Just watched a screener copy of the black metal documentary Until the Light Takes Us. Super low budget, but it has some in depth interviews with Varg in prison and follows Fenriz all over Norway. Certainly worth watching.

Hellhammer makes a statement about how he's proud of Bard for killing a faggot. That really makes me question seeing Mayhem live, or giving them any local press when that tour comes through town...

Nate Carson, Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:56 (fourteen years ago) link

On a separate note: Pitchfork brutally slams the new Wolves in the Throneroom releases.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 21 May 2009 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

funny i'm listening to black cascade now and while i don't think it's as good as two hunters that pfork review is very wrong. seems like black cascade's problem is production more than anything.

oh man you are in for a great show tonight dude. best show of the year so far for me.

moved to the Home of Rest For Horses at Speen (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:10 (fourteen years ago) link

It's a weird time for P-Fork to slam WITTR, when as someone pointed out elsewhere, stylistically it's not far off from the first two albums, which they unabashedly loved. Plus Stosuy was singing the album's praises in his column if I recall...I'd trust his opinion over the editors' when it comes to a metal album, that's for sure.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

At the very least it's good to know which black metal artists have grown up, and which ones are still idiots after all these years. Shame, too, cos he's such an incredible drummer.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:18 (fourteen years ago) link

If that Pitchfork review makes people who "trust" Pitchfork reviews stay away, that's fine with me.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 22 May 2009 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Marduk didn't make the gig tonight. Oh, well; at least I got to see Lair of the Minotaur.

unperson, Friday, 22 May 2009 02:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Just watched a screener copy of the black metal documentary Until the Light Takes Us.

Just wanted to big this up. It's really really good.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 22 May 2009 02:05 (fourteen years ago) link

man, I really want to see this.

hellhammer sounds like a big jerk/MORAN.

original bgm, Friday, 22 May 2009 14:22 (fourteen years ago) link

does that surprise you?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 22 May 2009 14:25 (fourteen years ago) link

no, but it still kind of blows my mind that he would think it's cool to say that.

original bgm, Friday, 22 May 2009 14:30 (fourteen years ago) link

and I just read the pitchfork wittr reviews. really weird that they would slam those last two releases while praising two hunters/diadem. they definitely seem cut from the same cloth.

plus, diadem is really, really boring.

original bgm, Friday, 22 May 2009 14:35 (fourteen years ago) link

review seems to boil down to, "this black metal band plays black metal too much on these records."

original bgm, Friday, 22 May 2009 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

I was actually slightly disappointed by Black Cascade, mainly because I don't think it followed through on the most promising aspects of Malevolent Grain that I really liked. But still, no way either of them deserved that kind of trashing.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 22 May 2009 14:43 (fourteen years ago) link

it just means BM isnt hip in pitchforkland now. troo elitists will be rejoicing that their music isnt being tainted by hipsters anymore.
