that is probably my favorite because it's so untranslatable to other contexts and yet serves/served its purpose

I will say that it took me a while to get the hang of ILXese, and I still don't get the in-jokes a lot of the time. It is a distinct style, that was ahead of its time in some ways. Some of the abbreviations are internet-wide (like IMO); others are ILX-specific (like otm). Much of it predates text-speak. So in some ways the larger culture has caught up to where you folks already were.

To me, the archetypal ilx post is aggressively uncapitalized and unpunctuated; it is often zingy or eye-rollingly dismissive in nature, and includes at least one ILX-specific abbreviation. Often a non-obvious nickname base on a previous user name. My normal mode is full sentences with capitalization and punctuation (even in a text to my wife about picking up cat food). So a laconic ILXy post like

not an original idea tbh

is outside my normal idiom (compared to the rest of the web), and it can still often seem fresh and fun.

I still don't get the in-jokes a lot of the time.

That's half the fun. Even when you know the origin, it still doesn't necessarily make any sense.

Ripped Taylor (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

you guys have to come up with a book title for the history of ILX. extra points if you can fit "pile on deej" into the title. but it isn't a deal breaker. okay, go!
