interested to see these results. if i hasn't revisited i would have voted Love and Rockets too.

Why is Bauhaus an option in the poll?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 30 November 2017 05:49 (six years ago) link

but if it's an option then it's:

Bauhaus > Tones on Tail > Love and Rockets > Peter Murphy

I don't think I've even heard anything by these:

David J
Dalis Car
The Bubblemen
Poptone

Am I missing out on anything?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 30 November 2017 05:52 (six years ago) link

Bauhaus > Tones on Tail > Love and Rockets > Peter Murphy

Exactly how I rank them too. They are all great, but Bauhaus just has that synergy and rawness and pure fearlessness that was never quite matched in other incarnations. Tones On Tail gets closest.

I don't think Poptone has any original material. It's Ash, Haskins and his daughter doing Bauhaus, ToT and L&R songs on tour.

I kinda think you either love Dalis Car or hate it. I think the music is exquisite:

lol at The Bubblemen getting one vote despite only having one song.

poor david j.

stirmonster, Friday, 1 December 2017 02:51 (six years ago) link

It amuses me..

They apparently would appear at Love&Rockets gigs and mooch around to backing tapes. Wonder how that went down with the Goths..

Mark G, Friday, 1 December 2017 06:55 (six years ago) link

the goths loved it.

stirmonster, Friday, 1 December 2017 10:08 (six years ago) link

i saw it and wrote about it in the L&R part of the poll. The Bubblemen opened for them at a gig i saw in Long Beach. losts of strobe lights.

six years pass...

yeah, big oof re:david j. i like his albums quite a bit. granted, not more than tones on tail or earth sun moon, but his brand of whimsical jangle is exactly my bag.

anyway wanted to post a remix from one of his early 2000s singles and found it wasn't anywhere online. so fuckit: had to up it to the tube—

david j — "the auteur (thievery corporation remix)" (2002)

very much cliche early 2000s chillout room bait, but who cares: classic breakbeats under fake tablas and faux nasheed. i like that sort of thing. also one of my fav thievery corp productions.

David J is the ideal "second voice" as both songwriter and singer on the Love and Rockets albums - while Daniel Ash goes for the pop songs and the big statements, J hangs back and comments thoughtfully. Can't say I've been particularly inspired to seek out his solo work as a result, though I do remember pleasure seeing the video for "I'll Be Your Chauffeur" late one night.

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 10 December 2023 18:28 (four months ago) link

i guess i'd classify his albums as basically jangle pop. "i'll be your chauffeur" is quite representative, tbh. if you like that one, crocodile tears and the glass singles compilation are pretty satisfying, tho not going to change anyone's mind about him.

Yeah I like his general bent, it's always rewarding when I do a random listen. Some real strange/interesting obscurities early on too, like the collaboration he did with an actual member of the Bauhaus school, Rene Halkett:

And of course his collaborative EP with Alan Moore released I believe in concert with the respective issue of V for Vendetta (in the relevant issue V performs this song at a piano)

The collection of archival home recordings out on Independent Project Records looks great but alas was only a limited edition RSD vinyl release, at least so far:

Surpisingly, Tones on Tail is on the bill for the Cruel World festival next May in Pasadena.

It's really just Poptone; Glenn Campling said it was okay to use the name. And nothing wrong with Poptone, they do a great job with the material!

Nope: Warrior #12 came out August 1983 (headlined by the debut of Bojeffries Saga, This Vicious Cabaret the fourth of five features), melody credited to David Jay; the EP April 1984 with no additional Moore contributions.

The DC shrunken-and-colourised-and-collected issue #4 came out in December 1988.

For more substantial collaborations with Moore, see his spoken-word-with-music pieces The Birth Caul (one of the best things Moore ever did) and The Moon And Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre Of Marvels.

Ah yeah, I see it's Ash, Haskins and Diva Dompe.

I really want to go to this, mostly because I have never seen Blondie and I don't want to miss my chance.

David J.'s album Crocodile Tears and the Velvet Cosh is outstanding. Very much worth a listen.

Of the post-Bauhaus acts, I'd say Murphy has had the best output overall. He's also a much better live act than L&R. Danny Ash did damage my hearing about 15 years ago.
