"CAN'T EXPLAIN: Dudes who get all bent out of shape if you call them "dude,"

i don't really like it. coming from people i don't know. but i'm used to it. living in philly, african-american men i didn't know either called me dude or big guy. so, you know, a decade of people calling you dude you get used to it. but it can feel dismissive to me coming from people i don't know.

scott seward, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:04 (six years ago) link

prefer salespeople to call me dude (which has never happened) rather than bro (has happened in the most bizarre contexts, like helping me find laser printer toner) or (and this seems increasingly and weirdly popular especially in sandwich shops) boss.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

toner for the bro, sub for the boss

here come the warm jorts (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

I've been recently more and more buddy'd by: a female friend; a work higher-up; and sales personnel. I don't imagine any of these people intend it to have the slightly aggressive and belittling tone with which I hear it.

I once got "legend", which i instinctively wanted to object to but fuck it.

There is a guy at work who calls me (and only me) "bro" or "brother" every time I run into him in the break room; I can't tell if this is because he is super Boston, super racist, or part black.

is women greeting a group of women as "heeey guys" a Minnesota thing or all over?

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 2 December 2017 00:19 (six years ago) link

my mom walked up to the cash registers (no line) at a food place with me and asked "which of you guys is taking orders" and both cashiers were women

mh, Saturday, 2 December 2017 00:22 (six years ago) link

“Guys” is not a gendered term anymore. “You guys” is always preferable to “you women.”

New Jersey (treeship 2), Saturday, 2 December 2017 00:24 (six years ago) link

well Midwestern normies were leading the charge on that one for the last couple decades

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 2 December 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

When I was a teacher someone observing me said I shouldn’t call the class “guys” as in “alright guys, let’s get started” because it marginalized the girls. I did not take this criticism seriously.
