i don't really like it. coming from people i don't know. but i'm used to it. living in philly, african-american men i didn't know either called me dude or big guy. so, you know, a decade of people calling you dude you get used to it. but it can feel dismissive to me coming from people i don't know.

prefer salespeople to call me dude (which has never happened) rather than bro (has happened in the most bizarre contexts, like helping me find laser printer toner) or (and this seems increasingly and weirdly popular especially in sandwich shops) boss.

I've been recently more and more buddy'd by: a female friend; a work higher-up; and sales personnel. I don't imagine any of these people intend it to have the slightly aggressive and belittling tone with which I hear it.

When I was a teacher someone observing me said I shouldn’t call the class “guys” as in “alright guys, let’s get started” because it marginalized the girls. I did not take this criticism seriously.

Like it was English class the girls were the only ones who participated anyway. I think they knew it wasn’t bro hour.
