Nah, his Gucci fandom is the least interesting thing about him. He gives lip service to Gucci, but his sound owes more to Keef. Both of those things are kinda boring on their own, but I love the tape's mashup of slasher films and sugary breakfast cereal.

Also helps that he uses his own stable of producers, rather than just tapping the same old 1017 standbys. Gucci's never made a tape that sounds anything like this

i dunno, most of his records so far i find aggressively unlikeable

lets talk about how this is the best chief keef record of the year

I haven't kept up with them all but that whole tape sounds like his best start-to-finish project in years to me. The mix is interesting... all these songs, like "Less Speed," that might have been played for maximum volume a few years ago, sound slightly cushioned, like it was mastered with headphones in mind

Evan R, Friday, 1 December 2017 21:08 (six years ago) link

it doesn't feel like his 'best project in years' to me in the sense that his catalog has always sort of exceeded the bounds of his projects, and capturing just one project feels like you're only look at one facet of what he does--like, to say this best represents him when there's zero melodic records on it feels wrong. I will say that this, like Thot Breaker, feels like one of his best-packaged efforts, and is definitely more well sequenced than the unfortunate Bang 3 releases, which were kind of botched even though the have some classic records on them (ie "laurel canyon")

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 1 December 2017 22:41 (six years ago) link

I knew from the singles that this keef would not be for me. I enjoyed Thot Breaker a lot, and I was into Nobody 2 and quite a few Bang 3 tracks were great too despite being patchy on the whole. I'd love to see him put something together that was full of tracks like No and Tats. Still, for me, he's been the most consistently interesting and innovative rapper around for the last 3 years.

That cover art is amazing. It doesn't make me want to listen, however.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Friday, 22 December 2017 22:01 (six years ago) link

"deeply rooted" was released 2 years ago.
what he just released is "rooted the lost files", which contains outtakes and alternate versions of songs from deeply rooted.

ANU (sisilafami), Saturday, 23 December 2017 11:50 (six years ago) link

my bad, that's all accurate. the outtakes are v v good.
