I would encourage the option of putting someone in top 50 AND worst (as one could defensibly do for Griffith, Riefenstahl, Oscar Micheaux, Ed Wood)...

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 December 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

...Woody Allen, Lina Wertmuller...

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 December 2017 20:57 (six years ago) link

uh, no and no

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 December 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

You can all do better than that.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2017 04:17 (six years ago) link

Are all ballots sent to Eric H webmail? I've hardly done any polls.

I've recently been enjoying De Palma a hell of a lot, which is surprising because I didn't think I'd ever care for his work.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 8 December 2017 13:20 (six years ago) link

Yup, just email to the address in the original post. (I can't remember if my ILX-associated email is the same, so don't send there.)

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2017 13:41 (six years ago) link

Zero ballots so far! Keep up the good work!

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

i pretty much had my top 3 worked out a month ago, it's the other 47 that might need some cogitation

best display name of 2017 (Noodle Vague), Friday, 8 December 2017 19:42 (six years ago) link

Will definitely send a ballot.

WilliamC, Friday, 8 December 2017 19:44 (six years ago) link

i've narrowed it down to around 100.

Einstein, Bazinga, Sitar (abanana), Friday, 8 December 2017 19:44 (six years ago) link

Ha, I'm definitely going to make a ballot but I unfailingly send mine in at the last minute. Mind you, I probably won't be able to do it NYE so I'll pretend the deadline is Christmas or something.

emil.y, Friday, 8 December 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link

I'm sure I'll extend it for a few days after the new year, as is customary with these polls.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

it doesn't matter if you settle on a ballot with 25 or 37 or whatever odd number under 50, does it?

calzino, Friday, 8 December 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

Nope ... I forgot to institute a minimum I guess, but my plan is to weight ballots.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

uh, no and no

― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius)

What, that Allen and Wertmuller haven't made some of the best and worst films ever? You're mad.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 December 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link

it would by kinda helpful if the email address was clearer. what's the amp part? amp what? confusing.

Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Friday, 8 December 2017 21:39 (six years ago) link

amp = at

WilliamC, Friday, 8 December 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link

sure but already 3 or four people have asked for clarification and i've never heard of amp = at.

Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Friday, 8 December 2017 21:43 (six years ago) link

Is auteur mod gonna have to do 50 takes of the OP

sonnet by a wite kid, "On Æolian Grief" (wins), Friday, 8 December 2017 21:52 (six years ago) link

amp = at is my new detrius

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2017 23:43 (six years ago) link

auteur mod is gonna at least do one more take of that OP.

auteur mod, Friday, 8 December 2017 23:49 (six years ago) link

Auteur mod is Ed. Wood

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 8 December 2017 23:50 (six years ago) link

Are we doing the best of 2017 film run down? I've got a couple of 2016 films to put on that ballot.

DON'T, xyzzzz

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 10 December 2017 01:58 (six years ago) link

Second ballot in, btw.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:22 (six years ago) link

Doing some cramming with Kurosawa & Ozu before I submit my ballot.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

Sent my ballot. I didn't think I'd vote more than 30 but 50 was easy. I wish I had nominated more Japanese directors and animators.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 18 December 2017 21:35 (six years ago) link

Firmed up my ballot too. Intersectionality takes a hit, tho I'd argue my #1 choice is the only most wokest director who ever lived.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 21:39 (six years ago) link

Ballot received RAG. So far, 4 are in.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 21:45 (six years ago) link

Rosa von Praunheim? xp

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 December 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

yeah i'm working on mine and got the top 20 pretty solid but it's definitely going to be easy for me to get to 50. probably won't send mine in until boxing day, have a lot of stuff i need to watch. and rewatch. Todd Haynes rocketed up my list after i watched SAFE for the first time in 9 years yesterday.

flappy bird, Monday, 18 December 2017 23:19 (six years ago) link

Not that it's odd with only four ballots in yet, but only one director's on all four ballots and all four have different #1s.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 23:22 (six years ago) link

John Waters has that kind of oeuvre.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 December 2017 23:52 (six years ago) link

safe is his only "great" movie though xp

plax (ico), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 09:13 (six years ago) link

no, Far from Heaven and Superstar. :)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:36 (six years ago) link

(that joke doesn't scan, Alfred, no one's listing films)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:40 (six years ago) link

I'm pleased you gave my joke further thought.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:55 (six years ago) link

Carol is great

flappy bird, Tuesday, 19 December 2017 17:36 (six years ago) link

Ranked ballots only?

WilliamC, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 03:24 (six years ago) link

You can send ranked or unranked. Or a portion ranked and a portion unranked.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 03:58 (six years ago) link

Five ballots in and now no director appears on everyone's ballot. However, nine directors do appear on four ballots.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 22 December 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

Can I just send in my number 1? I can do randos for the rest.

Jeff, Friday, 22 December 2017 21:15 (six years ago) link

Sure. I'll just assign the same number of points to the rest.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 22 December 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

I have my 50 carved out and my top (several) ranked. Just a matter of deciding if I want to rank all 50.

WilliamC, Friday, 22 December 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

I heard some damning material on UK film hacks on the R4 movie show the other day: First an in-depth examination of Baby Driver's soundtrack. Followed by an interview with the artist behind 3 Billboards explaining his art. Would have voted for either of them after listening to that nightmare.

calzino, Friday, 12 January 2018 19:52 (six years ago) link

haven't see Baby Driver yet and know nothing about it, but more than one person has told me they thought I would like it because of the soundtrack

Dan S, Friday, 12 January 2018 19:53 (six years ago) link

How very "Blueshammer defense."

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 12 January 2018 19:55 (six years ago) link

Fellini was indeed my reflexive answer for "worst." But that just means his temperament is not mine. Most everything I've seen--seven or eight films--left me cold, including a few attempts at 8-1/2. I did like La Dolce Vita the one time I saw it.

clemenza, Friday, 12 January 2018 19:57 (six years ago) link

xxp

yeah didn't realise before voting it existed. might have voted nicholas roeg.

And, with a robust two votes each, here are the directors tied as ILX's worst:

Terrence Malick

Christopher Nolan

Tune in next week to see which places any of those 18 directors earn in the actual list!

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 12 January 2018 20:26 (six years ago) link

Oh yeah. I guess those two are unsurprising but yawn

very stabbable gaius (wins), Friday, 12 January 2018 20:30 (six years ago) link

Those aren't the two worst directors.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 12 January 2018 20:38 (six years ago) link

great gif choices

LLAMAS ARE FOR CLOSERS (WilliamC), Friday, 12 January 2018 20:42 (six years ago) link

I voted for John "Lower, lower" Landis, whose direction was so bad that it killed people.

adam the (abanana), Friday, 12 January 2018 21:26 (six years ago) link

I pity the Spielberg voter btw

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 12 January 2018 22:17 (six years ago) link

I went with M Shamanalahahlayaya. I support everyone’s decision on worst director though.

Jeff, Friday, 12 January 2018 22:29 (six years ago) link

Not that anyone was worried, but I assure you, none of these votes factor in as negative votes in the main poll.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 12 January 2018 22:29 (six years ago) link

ie Oscar Micheaux in the top 10

(better than every blaxploitation director ever btw)

ok i was one of the Nolans fuck him he is the worst

coombespair gaz prices (Noodle Vague), Friday, 12 January 2018 23:26 (six years ago) link

Nolan was my vote too. Can’t say it was anything other than an emotional response. There are plenty of directors make overwrought films that I really like, but he is not one of them

Dan S, Saturday, 13 January 2018 00:20 (six years ago) link

I was one of the Malick votes. Surprised he got more than one! and fwiw the one film of his I sorta like is Days of Heaven.

flappy bird, Saturday, 13 January 2018 02:09 (six years ago) link

xp
I have to say though, I did see Dunkirk since I voted, and it was the first film of his that I kind of liked

Days of Heaven is one of my favorite movies of all time

Dan S, Saturday, 13 January 2018 02:11 (six years ago) link

My knowledge of blaxsploitation is anything but comprehensive, but I do not remember ever experiencing 1) cringing or 2) boredom while watching any such title. For what that's worth.
