The Kd Lang song is nice, yes, but the actual Sheryl Crow theme is one of the best in Bond.

I love kd but the sheryl tune has a way better melody, and an actual chorus, whereas the kd is just an (admittedly fun) mess of Bassey pastiche atmospherics

Still better than Smith or Adele though

Imo "license to kill" is the great underrated bond theme

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 8 December 2017 14:43 (six years ago) link

I somehow don't hate the Smith one but it's still not a contender in the Bond theme sweepstakes

mh, Friday, 8 December 2017 14:44 (six years ago) link

also the moody string bit after the 2nd chorus on the sheryl is goooorgeous

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 8 December 2017 14:47 (six years ago) link

I don't understand why they haven't asked Goldfrapp yet, or would that be too obvious?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 8 December 2017 16:10 (six years ago) link

presumably it's because they look at how much of a profile the act has in the US, unfortunately

mh, Friday, 8 December 2017 16:15 (six years ago) link

do usa’ers give a fuck about sam smith?

Right before he performed the SPECTRE theme:
At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, held on 8 February 2015, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Smith performed "Stay with Me" and also received four Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Stay with Me") and Best Pop Vocal Album (for In the Lonely Hour)

with a few exceptions (Cornell, maybe) nearly all of the last 20 years of Bond themes has been artists either at their commercial peak in the US, or with a couple top singles within the last year

mh, Friday, 8 December 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link

they just offer it to whoever got the most solo vocal artist grammy awards half the time

mh, Friday, 8 December 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link

I assume there's a preference towards acts on Sony labels -- Cornell, Jack White, Alicia Keys, Adele were all on Sony. Sam Smith wasn't.

A View To A Kill is the only one that seems to get regular play as just a pop song from its era. Just heard it played in this restaurant in fact.

three weeks pass...

god that was rubbish

you shoulda killfiled me last year (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 13:54 (six years ago) link

Quite enjoyed it in the cinema, but caught a bit of it on TV last night and wasn't at all impressed.

chap, Tuesday, 2 January 2018 13:56 (six years ago) link

Well.....I mean you've seen mendes other bonds?

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link

this was the first Craig one i didn't see on a big screen, landscape porn and booming sound system would've improved the experience but i feel like somebody should've written a story for it

you shoulda killfiled me last year (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 13:58 (six years ago) link

how does anybody fucking waste Christoph Waltz?

you shoulda killfiled me last year (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 13:59 (six years ago) link

only the fact that i was watching it with my mum stopped me from putting my foot thru the telly

you shoulda killfiled me last year (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 13:59 (six years ago) link

incidentally the first episode of McMafia on BBC1 last night was far better than this

you shoulda killfiled me last year (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:02 (six years ago) link

yeah I think I went too easy on this one upthread, it's a bad bond. no desire at all to rewatch ever.

Newb Sybok (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:07 (six years ago) link

there are no good bonds

christoph waltz has been wasted in everything except the tarantino movies tbh

xp

i'm aware of your rongness on this point

this one was bad enough to make me regret all of them tho

you shoulda killfiled me last year (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:12 (six years ago) link

Yeah I caught this last night for the first time and it was laughably bad.

The dreadful lifeless theme tune should have warned me what was to come really.

quite like the song, one of the least rubbish things about the whole experience

Mendes hates Bond it's pretty obvious

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:48 (six years ago) link

i found this more diverting than skyfall but it's not very good no

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 16:07 (six years ago) link

This one def went through a spectacular reversal for me too, from seeing it in the theater & thinking whoa that was p great to rewatching & going ... ok wtf WAS that

(Dave Bautista henchman still great though, that chase was dope)

all that Christoph Waltz/Blofeld backstory was so fkn STUPID grrr it makes me so mad now

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 17:36 (six years ago) link

Skyfall held up a little better to rewatching, plus it’s shot so gorgeously I get distracted from the silly stuff

But yeah Spectre just annoys me more & more every time I put it on (ive rewatched twice since theatres)

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 17:38 (six years ago) link

if it helps my pals and i made best sense of this (the equal worst entry in a long series all just as bad) by assuming that everything that happens after the torture scene is only happening in bond's head as he lies unconcious and feverish on the operating table, as will be revealed in the next ep when he wakes up

mark s, Tuesday, 2 January 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

it’s the worst thing to hope for bcz god how shit is THAT but tbf i kind of hope it’s true

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 17:57 (six years ago) link

Did ILX ever poll the best Bond film opening scene? This would be...top half.

ok this is unexpected but it actually hits quite differently rewatching now after seeing No Time To Die

i think half of what i didnt like was Madeline Swan & i honestly appreciate her a lot more now?

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 13 October 2021 03:17 (two years ago) link

Yeah I kinda figure that like with QoS if you watch this in combination with the film it’s most directly tied with it takes on a different resonance, however unintended at the time.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 October 2021 12:16 (two years ago) link

honestly, I always liked Spectre and was the odd person out on this thread (I think DJP liked it too? I can't recall).

also I love "Writing on the Wall" I don't care if I am its sole defender. but I don't care for Eilish's song.

I do recognize that it is a bit lazy to throw in a character that previously was obviously not part of the universe and retconning them to be the puppetmaster of the previous films, but.....I think that's an inherent problem of turning Bond into a universe with continuity. Nobody gives a fuck if shit doesn't line up in the pre-Craig Bonds. I kind of hope they go back to the standalone format from here on out, even though I liked the Craigs.

also on the way to see Spectre I totally hit someone's car in the parking lot so I should hate the film but I don't.

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 13 October 2021 16:27 (two years ago) link

i rewatched (sorry, 'rescreened') QoS a little while back because i got the sense it was getting a reappraisal and...it was fine? i think i might not have actually seen Spectre, so might watch that soon before seeing the new one

gbx, Wednesday, 13 October 2021 16:31 (two years ago) link

QoS is definitely 'fine', just a huge letdown after Casino. I rewatched last night and I didn't outright hate it like I did when I first saw it, and I think the story is all over the place.

but the big thing is that the trailers for the movie made it sound like a much different movie than it turned out to be. yes, it was kind of a revenge flick, but....only somewhat? trailer made it seem like a neo License to Kill where Rage-Bond goes rogue and blows up entire cities in avenging Vesper.

also the oil woman replacing gold woman = fail

but it's still ok, opening set piece is good, so is plane fight scene.

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 13 October 2021 16:36 (two years ago) link

i remember being annoyed that he didnt shoot Blofeld and it definitely did not really sink in as to the why of it all

it’s quite poignant this time around
and when she looks at Bond instead of at the footage of White killing himself when theyre in Blofeld’s resort/lair … much bigger impact for me this time round

not the lyrics though, those are like 2nd grade level. just the musical aspect

Gardyloominati (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 13 October 2021 17:00 (two years ago) link

i still hate the song & skip the credits completely

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 13 October 2021 17:11 (two years ago) link

Especially as Radiohead's rejected effort is so much better (though I can see why it wasn't used as you can't really make out any of the words).
