it's good.

the finale....i wish it had been more.....i don't know. felt bad about the quick killing of some people. but it wasn't that. needed to feel more epic somehow. but it was still cool.

would love a separate show with whatshername from the walking dead as a tough sheriff. she's the best thing in Godless.

I think a lot of the things I want to say about this show are pretty spoileriffic, and I don't want to say spoilers because more people should watch this without them (I usually throw my hands up at trying to avoid spoilers but in this case I think watching it one, maybe 1.5 episodes at a time each night worked out great, without reading any recaps until we were all done, and recommend others try the same).
1. I like the fact that the title works about 10 different ways by the end, especially the way the show draws out morality and social contracts in a, ahem, forsaken territory
2. I do kind of agree with Sepinwall's take that the Roy Goode / Bill McNue / Frank Griffin story is more of a 90 or 100 minute movie plotline, while the exploration of La Belle's society and its environs is much more fodder for 8+ hours of teevee time.
3. for the most part this show was extremely enjoyable to look at, when it wasn't, it was for good reasons, and never seemed gratuitously gory
4. it did occasionally seem gratuitously grim but it is called Godless and Frank's a bastard
5. okay more later

Oh hi Godless thread.
I spent several seconds longer than I should have after reading the preceding post thinking who is Bill McNue? That character wound up seeming a bit more tacked-on than at first I thought he would.

so i watched this and enjoyed it from episode to episode. didnt care for the finale tho. in the end it felt like we barely got to know these characters, hard to tell who and what it was actually about. thought the acting was good overall, worth a watch for j Daniels alone.

Yeah, it can't be easy to seem menacing in that particular claustrophobic way when you're out in great open spaces, but JD pulls it off! I kept losing myself in the character and having to pull myself out by mentally superimposing Dumb and Dumber To for a second.

There's something deeply unsatisfying about this - like it can't decide whether to be a trad Western or a revisionist one, and wants the best of both worlds. For all the 'town full of women' window dressing it's still very much a tale of violent men. The story's compelling enough, and the performances and direction are mostly pretty good, writing and editing not so much (so many scenes draaag). Haven't watched the finale yet.

I didn’t mind the scenes that dragged, at least not most of them. I hated the mining company guy coming into town and ripping off the women. Didn’t care for his bully enforcer either but that guy’s comeuppance was so obvious

anyone who wears a non cowboy fancy bowler type hat in a western is always a bad person

Absolutely this. But even with the gratuitous fleshing out of Roy and Frank's relationship neither of them really got a proper arc, let alone poor Bill (I thought the blindness would be going somewhere but nada...), let alone any of women of La Belle. Overall, I liked the build-up eps and it had some interesting ideas, but really an exercise in wasted potential.

It was extremely important to me how when the pastor finally shows up he just mumbles a bunch of pablum and acts like he knows things about people he never met. I felt like the finale really did the title justice. And it was extremely tense for most of its (extensive) running time.

I really liked it, but it really did feel like it wasn't planned to be a miniseries, like at one point they found themselves looking at the final line of the budget sheet and decided to pull some production/scenes/episodes off. It would also explain some weird cheap post-production effects in the flashbacks scenes.
