Are we doing the best of 2017 film run down? I've got a couple of 2016 films to put on that ballot.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 December 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

DON'T, xyzzzz

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 10 December 2017 01:58 (six years ago) link

Second ballot in, btw.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:22 (six years ago) link

Doing some cramming with Kurosawa & Ozu before I submit my ballot.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

Sent my ballot. I didn't think I'd vote more than 30 but 50 was easy. I wish I had nominated more Japanese directors and animators.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 18 December 2017 21:35 (six years ago) link

Firmed up my ballot too. Intersectionality takes a hit, tho I'd argue my #1 choice is the only most wokest director who ever lived.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 21:39 (six years ago) link

Ballot received RAG. So far, 4 are in.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 21:45 (six years ago) link

Rosa von Praunheim? xp

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 December 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

yeah i'm working on mine and got the top 20 pretty solid but it's definitely going to be easy for me to get to 50. probably won't send mine in until boxing day, have a lot of stuff i need to watch. and rewatch. Todd Haynes rocketed up my list after i watched SAFE for the first time in 9 years yesterday.

flappy bird, Monday, 18 December 2017 23:19 (six years ago) link

Not that it's odd with only four ballots in yet, but only one director's on all four ballots and all four have different #1s.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 23:22 (six years ago) link

John Waters has that kind of oeuvre.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 December 2017 23:52 (six years ago) link

safe is his only "great" movie though xp

plax (ico), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 09:13 (six years ago) link

no, Far from Heaven and Superstar. :)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:36 (six years ago) link

(that joke doesn't scan, Alfred, no one's listing films)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:40 (six years ago) link

I'm pleased you gave my joke further thought.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 12:55 (six years ago) link

Carol is great

flappy bird, Tuesday, 19 December 2017 17:36 (six years ago) link

Ranked ballots only?

WilliamC, Wednesday, 20 December 2017 03:24 (six years ago) link

You can send ranked or unranked. Or a portion ranked and a portion unranked.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 December 2017 03:58 (six years ago) link

Five ballots in and now no director appears on everyone's ballot. However, nine directors do appear on four ballots.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 22 December 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

Can I just send in my number 1? I can do randos for the rest.

Jeff, Friday, 22 December 2017 21:15 (six years ago) link

Sure. I'll just assign the same number of points to the rest.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 22 December 2017 21:17 (six years ago) link

I have my 50 carved out and my top (several) ranked. Just a matter of deciding if I want to rank all 50.

WilliamC, Friday, 22 December 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

I hope some of you are using your holiday breaks to work up a ballot.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Sunday, 24 December 2017 15:58 (six years ago) link

No one wants to vote until they've seen Downsizing. They just want to be sure.

clemenza, Sunday, 24 December 2017 16:14 (six years ago) link

I loved it. Fuckin Matt Damon though. Please retire

flappy bird, Sunday, 24 December 2017 21:36 (six years ago) link

Just kidding. Don't go drawing the ire of the Conseil des deux on to me.

clemenza, Sunday, 24 December 2017 22:05 (six years ago) link

XX-post: Ever been really glad to see a movie come out...because you don't have to see the trailer ever again?

I, Fanbrat (j.lu), Sunday, 24 December 2017 22:42 (six years ago) link

ha, yes. Trumbo. The Shape of Water. but I didn't see any trailers for Downsizing

flappy bird, Sunday, 24 December 2017 22:49 (six years ago) link

Six ballots in! Happy Christmas!

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 25 December 2017 17:57 (six years ago) link

he's checking his emails
he's checking them twice

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 25 December 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

Directors I wished I nominated...

Marcell Jankovics
Nikolai Serebryakov
Tokuzo Tanaka
Nobuo Nakagawa
Sion Sono

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 25 December 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

I accept write-ins, if you want to redo your ballot.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 25 December 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

I'm writing in Bill Morrison on mine.

WilliamC, Monday, 25 December 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

I didn't realise we could vote people who hadn't been nominated. I might do it soon.

Jankovics and Serebryakov did some of my favourite animated films. Nakagawa for some of the most important ghost films. Sono for Love Exposure.
Tokuzo Tanaka for the brilliant and underseen Curse Of The Snow Witch and Haunted Castle, he did a ton of films in the 60s and I hope there's more surprises from him to discover.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 25 December 2017 21:55 (six years ago) link

switched my top 2 at the last second and voted before I can second-guess myself anymore

WilliamC, Monday, 25 December 2017 22:11 (six years ago) link

I'm totally writing in Sion Sono. Ranked pretty high, too.

Cherish, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 01:47 (six years ago) link

ok i've got my list down to 77, just need to make the necessary cuts and put the lower ones into some kind of arbitrary order

a Rambo in curved air (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 10:17 (six years ago) link

probably no one who's career started after 1980 for me

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 12:33 (six years ago) link

submitted

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 18:32 (six years ago) link

Up to 10 ballots now.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:41 (six years ago) link

Some directors getting just 1 or 2 votes at this point will shock and offend, well, Morbs anyway.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:46 (six years ago) link

Just submitted my ballot. Will be astonished and amused if any of my nominees turn up in the top 100.

Polly of the Pre-Codes (j.lu), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 00:39 (six years ago) link

Not sure how to rank directors where I haven't seen the bulk of their output or only care for a few of their movies. e.g. Robert Aldrich made some great movies, but I've also seen some where I can't understand what the hell I'm watching.

Einstein, Bazinga, Sitar (abanana), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:18 (six years ago) link

i feel strongly about my top 15-20. others are somewhat arbitrary. i mean my #5 has only made 2 films

flappy bird, Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:22 (six years ago) link

I am not a professional and therefore felt free to go with my feelings (especially for my lower 40).

Polly of the Pre-Codes (j.lu), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 02:48 (six years ago) link

sent my list in! It includes three write-ins (Nuri Bilge Celan, Carlos Reygadas, Lucrecia Martel)

Dan S, Thursday, 28 December 2017 22:38 (six years ago) link

*Ceylan

Dan S, Thursday, 28 December 2017 22:38 (six years ago) link

two ommissions i noticed are hollis frampton and hartmut bitomsky, surprised neither was nominated. Especially as McG was nominated.

plax (ico), Thursday, 28 December 2017 22:55 (six years ago) link

I'll send tomorrow, Margo.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 December 2017 23:03 (six years ago) link

McG

plax (ico), Thursday, 28 December 2017 23:12 (six years ago) link

Dan S, Sunday, 14 January 2018 07:28 (six years ago) link
