Another layer to this is how it seems like Johnson just decided to throw away everything from TFA he didn’t like. Snoke. Phasma. Kylo’s mask.

The Snoke/Kylo relationship really puzzles me. How did they even meet? Snoke doesn't seem like a guy who hangs out in the same social circles.

four months pass...

I quite liked much of this! Certainly the best one in 34 years.

not crazy about the fiery destruction pornography, but hey, wars

That's it. End Times.

the Old Republic / Resistance sure became a matriarchy quickly, though.

Laura Dern was wigged and costumed like she was hosting a benefit at Lincoln Center.

also Mark Hamill is a much better actor than when he was 30.

two years pass...

Watched this again for the first time since release and so much of it struck me as pitched so well emotionally, and brave in expanding the kinds of humour (and narrative direction) that can exist in these films. Even found the porgs funny though so maybe I was just feelin' sensitive.

As someone who saw and dug the original films as a kid but who is not an obsessive this film honours the passing of time for both the characters and we ourselves in an admiribly un-cunty way.

Which is an astounding achievement really, given the pressures that surround a property like this. As a film I only quite like it rather than love it but mad props for what they managed to do. Not seen IX yet.

oh dear, probably just don’t

TFA was entertaining and competent per JJ's MO but TLJ actually makes the continuation of the series viable, or at least justifiable. Beyond shameful the shit that was thrown Rian Johnson's way.

You mean see the other one, MatthewK? Yeah, obviously I've not been in any rush to!

yeah TLJ woke me up and I realised these films could be fun, and interesting, and oh god SURPRISING like they once were, then IX was the franchise snapping shut and squeezing out the most predictable fanservice turd ever written by a hyperventilating adolescent.

that's just, like, your opinion, man.

xp yes exactly, never going to forget the embers falling behind Kylo as he extends his hand to Rey after killing Snoke. it was like holy shit, something just *happened* in a new Star Wars movie. JJ is such a coward, I'll never watch IX.

jeez

let the hate flow imo

IX needs to be seen by everyone to annihilate any remaining goodwill for SW that VIII tricked you (back) into having

man

JJ is such a coward, I'll never watch IX.

Cowardly is exactly the right word for IX, though I get the feeling that the problem with it comes down more to Lucasfilm/Kennedy, who hired JJ knowing what they'd get. Complete knee-jerk reaction to fans grumbling about VIII. VIII is flawed but at least tries to go somewhere new

Nice to see the thread bumped for the last and best Star Wars movie

The entire trilogy sucks donkey balls tbf. IX was exactly the ending it deserved, the resistance bomber of SW movies
