Hey dl, I'm not a vocalist but I'd quite like to fuck these up. Any chance you could send me the stems?

Sure! send me your details. it's dog latin at gee mail dot com

nice! I like the little instrumental breakdown halfway through

New track on a free comp, it's the last thing I made out of everything last year. Percussion and bells recorded to cassette, put through a Whammy pedal for the parts that sound like they're going through a Whammy pedal, and Microbrute. As n/a pointed out the synth part sounds like "Snooooooooooooooop".

Oooh.... This is nice (S-). Reminds me of some early 90s house/rave classic crossed with, yeah a little bit of Fifth Mission-era TLS. I'd normally say to put a lo EQ cut on the bass but that's what kind of makes it cool. Really wobbles my tragus when listening on headphones

This is my favorite thing I've done in a while: https://austinato.bandcamp.com/track/untitled-87

That was pretty, and chill.

my last few songs have kind of been emo as fuck but that's kind of where i am right now. it's a shitty time in my life! i'm trying to balance it with melody, though. here's a new depresso-pop song along those lines: https://soundcloud.com/weinventyou/creature-of-the-night

Karl Malone, Monday, 15 January 2018 21:05 (six years ago) link

I enjoyed that.

thanks DJI

Thanks dog latin. All the musical bits are from slowed down cassettes, so ah, there wouldn't be much left with a hi-pass put on there!

I made a new track inspired in no small way by Reverend Dollars' Arson EP: https://soundcloud.com/chokice/big-t

I like that dl. Funny, I was cleaning out my Dropbox and came across a five year-old (!) demo with a similar vibe. Sounds better than I remember, I would try to salvage it except I ended up using the same kick drum pattern on this one.

hah, we should do an ILM comp of clappy stompers. My track was inspired by the track Clip Clap on Rev's Arson EP: https://soundcloud.com/reverenddollars/sets/arson-ep

Love that Rev track.

Sometimes I think my favorite genre is "dotted 8th notes".

i've been rehearsing new songs with a band and it's been really exciting and also scary (first time leading a band). it's interesting how knowing you'll have to play everything live changes the writing process. i've been listening to a lot of alvvays and tom petty recently, trying to simplify things a little bit. this is just a demo but one of those where i spent way the hell too long working on it. i'm pumped to eventually play it all really loudly with real people!

whoa -- tell me more!? do you need your drums from my basement?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

nope, or at least not yet! i'm not playing them - sticking to guitar and keyboard. it's still really early going with the whole thing, and at this point i'm still figuring out how to play my own parts. it's really weird to learn how to play your own songs, but even when i recorded old demos i'd just learn it well enough to record and then forget, or programmed them in the first place and never really thought about what scales or chords were being used. so basically i'm doofusing it up left and right

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 22:06 (five years ago) link

no prob! lmk if you want some drum support :)

recorded 2 new songs at our show on sat, i think they sound pretty good aside from the snare buzz in the second one

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

Nothing wrong with a little triggered white noise, I think the snare buzz sounds cool.

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

yeah it's not terrible. it gets drowned out pretty quickly -- i was playing someone else's kit and wasn't used to the way the snare turned on/off or i would have turned it off in the beginning

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 19:39 (five years ago) link

Lechera, I like your stuff. 'Watery' reminds me of a more clattery variation on the early modular synth stuff that Sam Prekop was doing with the Sea and Cake: 'Early Chicago' and 'The Sewing Machine'

I was using the Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer as a crutch. It was just too applicable for the kind of music I want to make and it was starting to make its way into pretty much every recording I made in almost the same exact context. Even though it was exactly the thing I wanted it for, I became too dependent on it. And, I don't know, maybe I'm a glutton for self-punishment, but I got rid of it. Instead of just having that magic button to press for instant ambience, I'm making myself try to rely on stacking my two delays (Carbon Copy Deluxe and FlashbackX4) for that sound. Ultimately, even though the Freeze got me where I wanted to be, I do prefer the more natural sound of two (or three) stacked delays. So anyway, here's one of the first recordings I did after the Freeze had made its exit. I'm pretty happy with the direction I'm heading now with my effects chain. I downsized considerably over the past few weeks from about twenty five pedals to about twelve (not counting tuner or loop station). I would like to get another envelope filter / auto-wah type pedal again, but I really need to research it pretty heavily, as my wants for that type of effect are pretty specific.

Anyway, good thread. Always like to read and listen.

thanks! listening to sea and cake back in the day opened my mind to a wider variety of rhythmic options than i had heard before -- it was a long time ago but it must be still swirling around in my brain matter :)
