Gold Soundz

or

Give It a Day

Here comes the phantom menace (ledge), Friday, 22 December 2017 19:24 (six years ago) link

the way SM sings "and in the parking lot is the sedan he bought he never, he never complains when it's hot" in 'grounded' is so brilliant- the emphasis he puts on "is the sedan he bought he never" is really unusual & sounds like he's saying "anybody" or something else... i love songs where the sound of the words is more important or have more impact than the words themselves. or they create a new sound, sounds like made up words. i don't know, it's hard to describe, similar thing happens in the chorus of 'another nail in my heart' by squeeze, most nirvana songs...

Gold soundzzz wld be my second pick

infinity (∞), Friday, 22 December 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link

grounded has a slight element of socio-political commentary and i think of pavement as pretty apolitical, gold sounds is more pavement-y to me

Get out those hard-hats
And sing us some skat
Blade gushers gush
Chained and perfumed
I don't need a minister to call me a groom

Grounded. It's a small masterpiece.

nostormo, Friday, 22 December 2017 21:05 (six years ago) link

Never really saw why Grounded is so well liked.

My default is Give It A Day

FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Friday, 22 December 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

I like Grounded a lot, but not my fave.

If I were allowed a POT, it would be Box Elder and Trigger Cut.

But as I'm not, Box Elder I think.

"Circa 1762" that was on the Slanted & Enchanted reissue, I guess it was never recorded other than a Peel Session?

i am in fact leavin' (work) for the holiday season

but i always complain when it's hot

mookieproof, Friday, 22 December 2017 22:49 (six years ago) link

this could be pavement heresy but i really like 'speak, see remember'

global tetrahedron, Friday, 22 December 2017 23:12 (six years ago) link

i think the only heresy is picking a spiral song

mookieproof, Friday, 22 December 2017 23:16 (six years ago) link

I always liked Kennel District

Didnt mtv in the 90s play hit the plane down for one of their show’s outros? Never watched mtv tho so i have no way to confirm

infinity (∞), Saturday, 23 December 2017 17:10 (six years ago) link

I usually think people who pick obscure and/or early songs in these circumstances are try-hard bellends but, fuck it: 'Frontwards' ;-)

Steve Reich In The Afternoon (Against The 80s), Saturday, 23 December 2017 17:35 (six years ago) link

Friends lifted Rattled by the Rush in those early seasons. I imagine if the band had done something about that they’d have made a fortune in royalties

Xp

Rly good track

droit au butt (Euler), Saturday, 23 December 2017 17:52 (six years ago) link

Lifted? Bit of a reach, really?

kraudive, Saturday, 23 December 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

I know it sounds similar but

kraudive, Saturday, 23 December 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

It’s a pretty blatant rip. Not “hey they kinda sound similar” but “hey this music wouldn’t exist if they hadn’t copied it from the source”

Evan R, Saturday, 23 December 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

I just always assumed it was a coincidence

kraudive, Saturday, 23 December 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

there is no way this is a coincidence, and "lifted" is definitely not a reach:

Just heard their "killing moon" cover for the first time yesterday. God I love Pavement.

yeah that's legit one of my 5 favorite pavement songs, so good

mookieproof, Monday, 25 December 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

the reference to "playing contract bridge" in Grounded seems like the most Pavement thing

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 25 December 2017 23:14 (six years ago) link

i love the drumming on grounded

it seems very simple -- i don't really know anything about drumming -- but appropriate in a ringo way

mookieproof, Thursday, 28 December 2017 03:45 (six years ago) link

“Shoot the Singer,” but these are all good choices. I miss Pavement.

tobo73, Thursday, 28 April 2022 14:57 (one year ago) link

x-post - how different would that version of "Grounded" be to usual Pavement?

There's a darkness to it, possibly?

djh, Friday, 29 April 2022 18:53 (one year ago) link

I always assumed West was considered the “better drummer” than Gary but listening to the early stuff again, there isn’t any way in hell West could have pulled off the awesome fills at the end of Texas never whispers
