i am v corny tbh so this song may, indeed, be corny

horseshoe, Friday, 29 December 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

I’m not saying I’ve never shared a video of kids dancing to faneto or whatever but that’s for songs that aren’t already number one on the pop charts and absolutely saturating a conversation, & is a starting pt for arguments about subjective quality not the final word

most of the videos i saw of people going crazy for bodak yellow came out well before the song topped the charts

this was not true of the train video posted upthread iirc

i mean the song came out & was instantly on rap caviar

but regardless my point was that no one is arguing that this song is 'authentically' popular but ppl keep hammering home that authenticity issue like it proves their taste right

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 29 December 2017 21:57 (six years ago) link

*no one is arguing the song is *not* authentically popular i mean

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 29 December 2017 21:57 (six years ago) link

arguing that people writing blurbs about how much they like the song don't actually mean it/are deluded/etc is close enough

sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Friday, 29 December 2017 22:32 (six years ago) link

where is anyone saying that?

mag gerwig! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 29 December 2017 22:35 (six years ago) link

the whole thread seems to be about this

sick, fucking funny, and well tasty (katherine), Friday, 29 December 2017 22:42 (six years ago) link

You are projecting so much that I want to warn you about the 10 seconds of silence in The Last Jedi

mag gerwig! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 29 December 2017 22:43 (six years ago) link

if its coming across that i think other people "shouldn't" like this song thats not at all my intent

if anything its sort of felt like the dominant tone is that not liking it is ~problematic~

im ok w/ anyone feeling any way about it, just explaining why i have trouble getting excited about it! personally! if what i say resonates w/ someone bc they hadn't thought about it before or deepens their relationship to it bc they think i might have a point, thats good too. but no one is saying there's some mass delusion bc people like a song

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 29 December 2017 23:08 (six years ago) link

and fwiw i think the song is 'fine' & 'fun' just ... not as good as lots of other ppl think it is. this kind of difference is ... in every thread about music on this board ever

I wanna hear what other people have as their song of the year in this thread to be honest

probably "Dot in the Sky" by Drab Majesty

this is indeed amazing

The question is not if it’s popular, it definitely is. it’s why. The answer is ‘because it’s fun’ and the counterargument is’no it’s not’.

I think my fave single is gonna end up being Akanamali by Sun-EL Musician and Samthing Soweto

idk about anyone else but i was arguing about the artists not getting the opportunities to be this popular which is a slightly difft argument than what you're talking about

rap caviar sucks ass

flopson, Saturday, 30 December 2017 05:13 (six years ago) link

fwiw this song broke on apple music (and whatever their rap caviar equivalent is) significantly earlier than spotify

dyl, Saturday, 30 December 2017 05:25 (six years ago) link

iirc

dyl, Saturday, 30 December 2017 05:25 (six years ago) link

I know I can google it but what is this rap caviar everyone is talking about?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 30 December 2017 05:52 (six years ago) link

a spotify playlist

flopson, Saturday, 30 December 2017 06:09 (six years ago) link

http://www.vulture.com/2017/09/spotify-rapcaviar-most-influential-playlist-in-music.html

The dozen sales and streaming executives gathered in Atlantic’s midtown headquarters, or conferenced in from L.A., have in front of them spreadsheets, sorted alphabetically, filled with streaming data on Atlantic’s urban artists. Most of today’s conversation centers around Atlantic’s two big summer breakouts, Cardi B and Lil Uzi Vert. Apple’s Carl Chery jumped on Cardi early, giving her prime exposure on the A-List: Hip-Hop playlist, and the numbers reflect that: For the week ending August 17, over half of “Bodak Yellow”’s 15 million streams came from Apple Music users.

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 30 December 2017 13:32 (six years ago) link

i guess there's a Spotify playlist for everything

imago, Saturday, 30 December 2017 13:38 (six years ago) link

one thing I'm liking about Tidal is the playlists and what they feature seems a little more human driven

like they did some cool stuff with ECM records in the jazz section recently

Joan Digimon (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 30 December 2017 13:43 (six years ago) link

Wow! Thought it was a radio station or something in the US! Very impressed to see it’s a spotify playlist and how huge it is.

Payola in the Spotify era sounds interesting... you can get real numbers and instant results and they’re pretty much open for everyone to see. Not being cynical this is kind of exciting for me... seeing the actual followers and play numbers behind a hit.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 30 December 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

EH it’s deceptive.. Apple doesn’t post play #s and apparently they broke it before rap caviar
