Someone's gotta rep for the comedy two-reeler hacks.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

well sure, the Hitchcock-imitator hack is... never mind

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:18 (six years ago) link

specifically who nominated mcG?

plax (ico), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link

In case anyone else is looking, Tsai is on the list, but backwards. Under M, not T.

Cherish, Friday, 29 December 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link

i'm almost 100% certain that McG was not a wholly serious nomination

a Rambo in curved air (Noodle Vague), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:25 (six years ago) link

xp oops, I'll fix that.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link

Meaning alphabetization of TML, not removal of McG.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link

i think a few of the east asian directors are inconsistently listed, some western style and some not

a Rambo in curved air (Noodle Vague), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:34 (six years ago) link

I tried to go with however Wikipedia had it listed whenever I could.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:35 (six years ago) link

remove! remove!

plax (ico), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:36 (six years ago) link

xxp i didn't find it a problem, can't see how it will be

a Rambo in curved air (Noodle Vague), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:36 (six years ago) link

is Joseph Cornell a movie director? i dont think it's fair to pit him against McG.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 December 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

I better see Kiarostami on a few ballots.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 December 2017 20:01 (six years ago) link

not my favorite Iranian filmmaker as it happens

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 December 2017 20:14 (six years ago) link

(or at least it's a contest)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 December 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

Also: better see some Kaurismäki.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 December 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

Whew! Got mine sent.

Cherish, Friday, 29 December 2017 20:37 (six years ago) link

man this ballot is daunting

i feel self conscious abt my cheesy pedestrian commercial tastes suddenly

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 30 December 2017 01:14 (six years ago) link

Would work on this but might turn out the same way as the VU poll, in which instance I just couldn’t narrow down in time for submission.

Steely Rodin (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 30 December 2017 01:23 (six years ago) link

Sent my revised ballot.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 30 December 2017 01:39 (six years ago) link

I did keep Morbs' 'no one who's career started after 1980' declaration in mind when voting...still ended up with 15-20 younger directors on my list. I'm interested in which contemporary directors ILX thinks are worthy additions to the canon

Dan S, Saturday, 30 December 2017 02:28 (six years ago) link

also, the list is a reminder of just how much women have been excluded from the film industry at the director level.

Dan S, Saturday, 30 December 2017 02:29 (six years ago) link

it's hard for me to find women to vote for because so few have an extensive filmography (or, as in the case of Elaine May, three fine to great films).

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 30 December 2017 04:43 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I made a real effort to include women, and ended up with only nine. (Some without extensive filmographies, I have to admit.)

Cherish, Saturday, 30 December 2017 05:09 (six years ago) link

Okay, I'm done. Ended up ranking 15 slots and throwing in the rest unranked, and overall I feel like it was a bit carelessly cobbled together, but it'll do.

Didn't count up how many women were on my ballot but it'll be less than nine, I think. Mind you, two of them are in my top 5. Exclusionary practices/institutional sexism does mean that there a fewer to choose from even when you want to be more representative. I did find a few reminders of women whose work I should check out, though. I also really need to watch more films by directors who aren't white Eurodudes.

emil.y, Saturday, 30 December 2017 22:59 (six years ago) link

*there ARE fewer

emil.y, Saturday, 30 December 2017 23:00 (six years ago) link

I sent mine before Christmas. The only non-nominated director I would have voted for (had I known it was allowed) would have been Masaki Kobayashi.

cajunsunday, Saturday, 30 December 2017 23:07 (six years ago) link

You can revise your list, I did.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 31 December 2017 00:09 (six years ago) link

only voted five women

plax (ico), Sunday, 31 December 2017 00:35 (six years ago) link

I only voted one woman, I think. I just wasn’t familiar with many of them.

Jeff, Sunday, 31 December 2017 00:54 (six years ago) link

apropos or something's comment above, I think Under The Skin is one of the most amazing movies I've seen from the 21st century

Dan S, Sunday, 31 December 2017 01:39 (six years ago) link

just sent one, Eric. You only need to respond if you don't my hotmail email with dowd in its address.

calzino, Sunday, 31 December 2017 02:01 (six years ago) link

*get* my hotmail

calzino, Sunday, 31 December 2017 02:02 (six years ago) link

I did find a few reminders of women whose work I should check out, though.

Everyone should watch all the Akerman, Varda, and Denis!

Cherish, Sunday, 31 December 2017 03:49 (six years ago) link

yes! ^

looked at my ballot again and rated akerman wayyyy too low

flappy bird, Sunday, 31 December 2017 05:20 (six years ago) link

sent!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 31 December 2017 06:20 (six years ago) link

Thanks for the ballots thus far! I am about a half dozen or so behind in tallying, but I'll catch up over the course of the next couple days.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Sunday, 31 December 2017 06:29 (six years ago) link

I should def see more Akerman bit tbh she'd have a place high on my ballot for Jeanne Dielman alone

i know kore-eda (or something), Sunday, 31 December 2017 11:29 (six years ago) link

Is the 'poll extended due to insanely cuet niece' still in place? I'll ruffle up a ballot tomorrow!

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 31 December 2017 12:27 (six years ago) link

How about a formal extension, so I can spend the waning hours of the year watching Phantom Thread and not deciding whether Ernst Lubitsch is "better" than Ousmane Sembene?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 31 December 2017 12:46 (six years ago) link

Decide over a mimosa.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 31 December 2017 12:49 (six years ago) link

Eric, I should send in the next few hours.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 31 December 2017 12:49 (six years ago) link

It's 15 fucking degrees here, my lips would stick to the glass. (also i am not a Brunchie)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 31 December 2017 13:13 (six years ago) link

Nor am I, and don't understand the mimosa.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 31 December 2017 13:25 (six years ago) link

this sounds like Lubitsch 2017

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 31 December 2017 13:37 (six years ago) link

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Sunday, 31 December 2017 15:37 (six years ago) link
