I do kind of agree with Sepinwall's take that the Roy Goode / Bill McNue / Frank Griffin story is more of a 90 or 100 minute movie plotline, while the exploration of La Belle's society and its environs is much more fodder for 8+ hours of teevee time.

Absolutely this. But even with the gratuitous fleshing out of Roy and Frank's relationship neither of them really got a proper arc, let alone poor Bill (I thought the blindness would be going somewhere but nada...), let alone any of women of La Belle. Overall, I liked the build-up eps and it had some interesting ideas, but really an exercise in wasted potential.

It was extremely important to me how when the pastor finally shows up he just mumbles a bunch of pablum and acts like he knows things about people he never met. I felt like the finale really did the title justice. And it was extremely tense for most of its (extensive) running time.

I really liked it, but it really did feel like it wasn't planned to be a miniseries, like at one point they found themselves looking at the final line of the budget sheet and decided to pull some production/scenes/episodes off. It would also explain some weird cheap post-production effects in the flashbacks scenes.
