lmao at the ersatz Eno/SotL ending to the new Rosenstock record, bless his heart

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link

POST- is fine but not really close to being as great as WORRY., it doesn't have the same sheer density of hooks

ufo, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 07:42 (six years ago) link

yeah the only two songs that really grab me in the worry way are the two epics. i also love "yr throat"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 08:44 (six years ago) link

I really like the two quasi-ballads, "TV Stars" (despite its weirdly arbitrary chorus) and "9/10", which actually got me a little teary on first listen. Definitely a transitional record, which is easy to get away with when you release an album every 12-15 months.

Simon H., Wednesday, 3 January 2018 14:48 (six years ago) link

"it's not like any other job I know / if you're a piece of shit they don't let you go" is a good of-the-moment lyric

Simon H., Wednesday, 3 January 2018 14:52 (six years ago) link

Sounds great so far. It doesn't build and flow as seamlessly as WORRY, but I like all the songs individually.

gman59, Thursday, 25 January 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

I'm liking Closer too; can't escape the irony that the chorus of the track they've set to play first is "All I want is something familiar" bc yeah this sounds familiar! In a good way!

based on my many listens to "Charisma" I have decided that PBtT's David Haik is the most overperforming drummer in emo (in a good way)

Everything in this thread is absolutely beautiful. Have been loving the Tiny Moving Parts, Closer, Jeff Rosenstock, Runaway Brother (who I'd never heard of before, so thank you Evan R), Senses Fail...all of it!

This is a really richly produced sort of emogaze by 'Snape', who don't seem to have released much else before this. The whole thing sounds great, but try track 5 for something instantly loveable.

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

it's front half heavy but so many good singalongs

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

I have to admit that despite (because of?) their intensely one-note grey po-faced approach I've probably listened to the Pianos Become the Teeth album the most of any emo-sector record this year. a lot of stuff didn't connect for one reason or another, I didn't even really get into the Vespucci after all, mainly because Farren bores me as a lyricist/frontperson too much of the time

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:20 (five years ago) link

my emo cru-and-adjacent faves this year in no particular order

PbtT
Drug Church
Mewithoutyou
Fred Thomas
awakebutstillinbed
Joyce Manor
Tiny Moving Parts
Donovan Wolfington
Closer
Mom Jeans
Slow Mass
Foxing
Super Unison

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 November 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

i probably forgot 10000 things but here's my top 15 emo edition

mewithoutyou: untitled
drug church: cheer
rolo tomassi: time will die and love will bury it
foxing: nearer my god
fall out boy: m a n i a
john nolan: abendigo
joyce manor: million dollars to kill me
saves the day: 9
restorations: lp5000
now, now: saved
self defense family: have you considered punk music
black foxxes: reiði
hopesfall: arbiter
remember sports: slow buzz
real friends: composure

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

i did forget something which is fiddlehead!!!! put that above john nolan

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 13 November 2018 23:50 (five years ago) link

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 14 November 2018 13:12 (five years ago) link

yeah I listen to my edited version a lot but I had to slash a solid half-hour to make the pacing acceptable

i feel like i'm the only person who has noticed how many bangers are on this year's dashboard confessional album

It grew on me so much. Catch You is one of my most listened-to tracks this year.

I saw DC last night at the first London show in over ten years. I was freaking out for a week in advance and continue to freak out. I saw them once at Glastonbury in 2006 but that wasn't the same kind of experience at all...of all the emo sing-alongs, this was the most wildly exalting. He also played a new song he'd just written which sounded way more like old Dashboard and was pretty great.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 20 November 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

has Turnover been mentioned here? I'm digging it (though they are not new). The intro to this track reminds me of SY's "Brave Men Run" then later I hear GYBE! and The Promise Ring lol. This track is kinda spacey/indie but they are more properly emobarrassing on the LP 'Magnolia' which I keep coming back to

That Culture Abuse is weird. I don't know anything about them but it sounds like a bunch of hardcore dudes gave up hardcore to make a weezer record but forgot to change their bandname. That all sounds like a dis, but it's good dumb fun.

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:54 (five years ago) link

it's so not hardcore/punk in the way the the drug church record is. The "hardcore dudes" I'm imagining is mostly just something about his demeanor/delivery, def not the music. Like there's just a vibe I get that reminds me of like H20's softer moments, or like Weston or something.
