by no means do i believe i should get what i want out of any thread, but what i wish is that this thread was an overview of new rap in 2018, and that is very different from what it has been. and that's fine, but maybe there should be two threads, one for teen zeitgeist and one for rap music

idk there's always a wide variety of rap musix posted in the thread, i think the reason why the high-brow stuff alpine static mentioned isn't discussed in the thread is just cause the people who post most often in the thread listen to other things, not because they exist outside the parameters of the rap thread.

the teen zeitgeist as an orienting feature was key imo bc of course we post all kinds of rap in here but notionally the idea is that its in some way aware of whats going on in the genre, not that its limited to teen zeitgeist music ... since when have i only posted teen zeitgeist music in the threads?? thats such a dumb takeaway it pains me

if you call a thread old man rap bullshit 2017 (which is essentially what the title currently indicates) its just gonna attract old man rap bullshit which is why orienting it around music generally dismissed as disposable & ephemeral and teenage was a needed corrective, ppl want to always 'fix' the thread by adding the rap they think matters which is cool its the function of the thread but its dependent on a primary orientation being the rap that's not taken seriously (but is ultimately the driving force of the genre)

i guess boring street rap thread would be in keeping with ilx's turn to self serious "incurious revelry" (c. r|t|c who also hasnt posted since july)

I don't have a problem with the title but I agree with Deej that anything we can do to encourage the thread to engage with visceral new stuff in addition to all the expected old man stuff is really appreciated.

Would be cool if there were a way to cleave the thread into two, like a 2018 Rolling 48-Year-Old New Yorkers Staying True to the Music They've Been Making Since the '91 Thread and a 2018 Rolling Lil Pump Thread or something, since at this point those factions of ilx have grown so far apart.

I dunno, there was a time on ilx when the old guard rap fans would weigh in on buzzy youthful rap with pretty insightful opinions, even if they weren't feeling it. That doesn't really happen very much anymore. The thread seems to have split into two factions, both of which feel underserved and resentful about it.

i'm all for posting and celebrating visceral new stuff and music generally dismissed as disposable/ephemeral/teenaged, truly! i just think that stuff dominates discussion here.

like, i went and ctrl+f'd some of those names i mentioned in the '17 thread and someone made a joke about whispering in a backpacker voice about Milo *because* that stuff gets no traction at all amongst all the Lil YouTubes.

and i am definitely NOT interested in 48-year-old New Yorkers Since '91, either. in fact i'm far less interested in that than visceral new stuff.
