Regarding that 'incident' as posted by Dan Worsley .. um, isn't that pretty close to almost fair? Obviously I wasn't there but both people had 'protection' 'in case' it kicked off which it didn't..

It's not exactly Don Arden with a headache is it?

Mark G, Thursday, 4 January 2018 10:13 (six years ago) link

I recall Einar yelling at the audience - who wanted them to come back on for an encore - at the end of a gig in '89 I once saw "YOU PAID TO SEE US, WE DID NOT PAY TO SEE YOU!!!!!"

MaresNest, Thursday, 4 January 2018 12:23 (six years ago) link

Quite a guy is our Einar. The closest I've ever been to getting into a fight in the entire time I've lived in Glasgow was after The Sugarcubes played here in '88 and he came over and started talking to my girlfriend and me at the bar after the show and within two minutes started throwing punches at me for seemingly no reason whatsoever. He was so drunk that he never managed to actually land a punch on me and was soon escorted from the venue by the security.

Just another classic 4AD punch-up!

did you say "OUCH! THAT REALLY HURTS!"?

OLI seem to be cunts from everyone I've had contact with who worked with them (Patrick from KOD, Ian from Disco Inferno, and Rudy)

Chumbawamba hates him too fwiw

sleeve, Friday, 5 January 2018 16:32 (six years ago) link

OLI have a shitload of old bands that were on Rough Trade listed on their current roster, so I think they must have bought a job lot of rights off them: Camper Van Beethoven, Beat Happening, Galaxie 500, Opal, Souled American, Woodentops, Band of Holy Joy, Straitjacket Fits etc

faust apes (NickB), Friday, 5 January 2018 16:33 (six years ago) link

In 1997 One Little Indian acquired parts of the old Rough Trade catalogue including landmark releases in AR Kane’s ‘i’, Shellyan Orphan’s ‘Century Flower’, Galaxie 500’s ‘?‘ and The Woodentops classic ‘Giant’. The roster also includes Mancunion indie heroes of the 80’s and 90’s respectively, Easterhouse and Marion – as well as The Boo Radley’s pre-Creation ‘Every Heaven EP’.

Yep, the album is now out, called 'DNA Cowboys' self-released via Bandcamp (digital) and their own website (vinyl). I really like it.

Um, can't believe I missed the Jübl album til now -- it's awesome! Finally fell in love with New Clear Child a few years ago so very much hearing/enjoying it in that context. Guess I should find the Sufi albums...

The first Sufi album is really great. The second, Lovers and Trippers, less so, kinda pedestrian trip hop.

henry s, Sunday, 14 February 2021 20:15 (three years ago) link

the first Sufi album has involvement from kevin 'the bug' martin.
something i only found out a few months ago.

mark e, Sunday, 14 February 2021 20:16 (three years ago) link

I think Virgin bankrolled the Sufi album as part of their ambient/isolationist series, which Kevin Martin was heavily involved with.

If only we could buy the album.
I have never ever seen a copy out in the wild.
And given the chaos, I doubt it will be up on bandcamp in the near future

https://mixmag.net/feature/exploring-the-black-roots-of-shoegaze-and-dream-pop

seen this doing the rounds a bit - a piece in Mixmag of all places, on the Black roots of shoegaze, featuring an interview with Rudy Tambala. There's nothing new said in it if you've been following AR Kane's online presence lately but it's nice to see it stated so clearly:

that’s what the experimental edge of Black music always does; invent, innovate and create new shit, which is rapidly imitated and assimilated

boxedjoy, Friday, 28 May 2021 12:10 (two years ago) link

Quite right

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 May 2021 19:26 (two years ago) link

Oh my god, that is reveletory. So awesome. I'd been looking for something like black shoegaze forever.

And that black artist database!

So psyched for more mixtape madness.

Thanks.

Luaka Bop is releasing a new version of Americana on vinyl but the real news in ways is that there's a new Greg Tate piece with it, one of the last things he wrote before his passing. You can read it here:

https://www.luakabop.com/products/a-r-kane-americana

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 December 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link

Wasn't this already a recent RSD release?

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 1 December 2022 15:38 (one year ago) link

They did, but this is a new variant per the PR:

Some of you might remember that way back in April we made a limited 2LP gatefold edition of Americana for Record Store Day (thirty years after its first release)—well, we held a few copies back for you. It has the same beautiful cover and artwork as the original (by Fabien Baron of Baron & Baron), but it comes with new notes by the late, great art and music writer Greg Tate, which were among the last things he wrote before he died.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 December 2022 15:39 (one year ago) link

I had the vinyl....you had to sit down and listen to it. It's got noise but also delicate and melancholy, it's got all of these jazz and reggae influences. Tough thing for a young band to pull off.

Funny this thread was revived...it's such a wintry record for me.

Picture of Chairman Mao (I M Losted), Friday, 2 December 2022 06:59 (one year ago) link

I don't understand the obsession with all the RSD-centric vinyl variants coming out these days.

Seems like such an arcane hobby...

I can't tell if he's trolling or not (ilxor), Sunday, 4 December 2022 19:22 (one year ago) link

Per this FB post, remasters of Up Home, sixty-nine and "i" due late June on 12", digital and of course ethereal formats. (Per a followup, no CD plans yet unless there is demand.)

Nice! I was pleased to find a decent enough copy of ‘69’ on vinyl in Berlin for €3 a couple of weeks ago in amongst some big crates of vinyl outside a shop. Got a Cardiacs LP too.

I keep checking online to see if there have been any updates on this. Surely they should be announcing these reissues any day? Needless to say, I'm stoked
