OMIT – Enclosures 2011–2016 [5xCD]
Pica Disk 2018 • PICA044
Co-released with End of the Alphabet Records
Distribution by Metamkine.

Since his first self-released cassettes in the early 1990s, New Zealand’s Clinton Williams AKA OMIT has been on a singular and personal musical journey. Described as one of the greatest outsider artists currently working in the field, OMIT employs homebuilt instruments constructed from modified electric motors and salvaged sound sources to create a startlingly original soundworld. It is a world he inhabits alone, isolated in the small town of Blenheim in southern New Zealand, but it involves a deep exploration of the human condition. Over the years OMIT’s music has become less noisy and more sparse and minimal, as open signal patterns and oblique textures pass each other in haunted spaces.

“Enclosures 2011-2016” is a 5xCD box-set co-released by Pica Disk (run by Lasse Marhaug out of Norway) and End of the Alphabet (run by Noel Meek in New Zealand) and collects OMIT’s most recent self-released albums, artefacts that originally came in super limited edition CDRs with hand-made covers between 2011 and 2016. Unavailable except directly from the artist, these beautiful works are now available remastered in a deluxe box-set along with OMIT’s famous surrealist drawings and science fiction themed artwork, plus liner notes by close friend and collaborator Bruce Russell (The Dead C/A Handful of Dust).

“Clinton Williams is the hardest-working man in minimal electronic music. He is one of two people I know fairly well who I honestly believe is possessed by genius.”
– Bruce Russell (from the liner notes)

NINA SIMONE - THE COLPIX SINGLES

2-CD / Highlights LP Remastered In Mono, Including Seven Singles Available In
Their Original Edits For The First Time Since The 1960s, And Liner Notes By
$tateside DJ And Compiler Dean Rudland

Available February 23 On $tateside Records

LOS ANGELES - Nina Simone started her musical career as a classically trained child virtuoso, whose piano recitals were local events. Strongly rooted in the works of Bach, the musician became a singer almost by accident and the rest is history. In 2018, Simone will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing her role as one of the most important musicians of our time.

Throughout Simone's nearly five decade long career, her recordings reached the top of the charts and earned her cult status and critical acclaim. From 1959 to 1964 she was signed to Colpix, who relinquished all creative control to her. On February 23, $tateside Records will present this integral collection, NINA SIMONE - THE COLPIX SINGLES as a 2-CD set for $24.98, 1-LP for $21.98, and digitally on the same day.

With her voice at her finest during this time, she worked her way through jazz and blues standards such as "The Work Song" and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)," as well as folk tunes like "Little Liza Jane," "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair," her very own "Blackbird" and "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl."

"I played what I wanted and nothing else," said Nina of her Colpix days in her autobiography, I Put A Spell On You. "Hell, they weren't paying me well enough to tell me what to play. There was no proper producer on my records - just an engineer to set everything up, an orchestrator to write out the arrangements, and the rest I did myself."

In recent years, Nina Simone's life and career have been extensively covered in acclaimed biographies and documentaries. However, her early recordings (that do not particularly illustrate her fight for civil rights or her personal life) are often overlooked. Very little is said about her output for Colpix, yet it is with these records that she began to develop her uniqueness. Her time at the label is often distilled down to the successful series of live albums she recorded, but it was in the 7-inch singles that her progress is clearest.

From the pop-tinged opening single "Chilly Winds Don't Blow," to the hauntingly spiritual, self-penned "Blackbird" on the flipside of her final 45 for the label, Nina Simone's creative development can be traced through her Colpix singles. A performer with a breakthrough hit when she joined in 1959, she was an established artist when she left the label in 1964.

Nina Simone's background is well known. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, in 1933, her prodigious talent as a musician was evident early on. Spotted playing hymns in church at the age of 6, some of the town's prominent residents established the "Eunice Waymon Fund" to pay for her music lessons. A noted musician, Muriel Mazzanovich (who Nina affectionately called Miz Mazzy), trained the budding prodigy to be a classical concert pianist. It was from these humble roots that Eunice developed a lifelong love of Johann Sebastian Bach, Chopin, Brahms, Beethoven and Schubert.

After graduation she studied at Juilliard in New York before applying to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Her application was rejected; something she suspected was due to racism. The blow was devastating. Broken-hearted, she vowed to apply again, but in the meantime needed to make a living and fund her music lessons. In 1954 she took a residency playing in a bar in Atlantic City, where she was also asked to sing. It was at this point Nina Simone was born.

When the owner of the Midtown Bar asked her for her stage name, Eunice told him to call her Nina Simone. "I always liked the name Nina, and I saw the name Simone on a movie poster" (probably the French actress Simone Signoret).

Her unique blend of jazz, classical music and blues soon won her an audience, and in 1958 she signed to Bethlehem Records. Her version of George and Ira Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy" went Top 20 on the Billboard pop chart. Her debut album Little Girl Blue followed soon afterwards. It was a bold artistic statement, especially notable for "Love Me Or Leave Me," which incorporated a touch of Bach. The contract Simone signed with Bethlehem reverberated years later when "My Baby Just Cares For Me" went to number one all over Europe and yet, having previously signed them away, she received no royalties.

In 1959 she moved to New York City. "New Year 1959 found me in a creepy marriage stuck in a tiny room with a hit record, a rising reputation, and no idea of how to make the money I needed to finish my classical training," said Nina. However, the success of "I Loves You Porgy" meant she was in demand, and Joyce O'Selznick, the talent scout for Columbia Pictures Records, Colpix, offered her a long term deal. It was an unusual label that released soundtracks, records by actors under contract to the studio, and some jazz and rhythm and blues.

The first single, "Chilly Winds Don't Blow," was written and produced by Hecky Krasnow. Hecky was best known for novelty records with Columbia Records, including Gene Autry's "Frosty the Snowman" and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." The follow-up was an adaptation of the spiritual "Children Go Where I Send Thee" backed with "Willow Weep For Me."

In September 1959 she was booked at NYC's Town Hall in Midtown Manhattan. The show, recorded live, mixed folk songs, ballads, jazz, and blues, as well as a couple of originals. "All these club dates had been trashy rehearsals for this, the night belonged to me," said Nina, "if you don't believe me you can listen for yourself, I was a sensation. An overnight success, like in the movies." Released as an album, Nina Simone At Town Hall would define her time at the label and lead to two further live albums. The first single from this session was "The Other Woman," coupled with "It Might As Well Be Spring" from her debut studio album for the label, The Amazing Nina Simone. It was followed by two more tracks from Town Hall, "Summertime" and "Fine And Mellow."

The next single "Since My Love Has Gone" was based on a melody by the composer Verdi, and was backed by "Tomorrow (We Shall Meet Once More)." Both of these were enhanced by dramatic, almost operatic string arrangements. This was then followed by "If Only For Tonight," paired with an exclusive edit of Simone's "Under The Lowest" taken from Nina Simone At Town Hall. Colpix had Nina return to the blues for the next release, and she excels on "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out." The B-side is even better, as she takes on "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair," a signature song she would return to time and time again.

The Nina Simone At Newport album brings us the next single: an upbeat version of "Cotton Eyed Joe" and a wonderful rendition of "Trouble In Mind." The run of compelling singles continues with her take on Oscar Brown Jr's "Work Song" which she makes her own, just as she does with B-side "Memphis In June" by Hoagy Carmichael. She surpasses herself on her next outing with readings of "You Can Have Him" and "Gin House Blues."

Keen to score a hit with Simone, Colpix sent her back to the studio for an answer to Ray Charles's smash "Hit The Road Jack." A sought-after record nowadays, "Come On Back Jack" didn't chart, and as a follow-up, the next single was "In The Evening By The Moonlight"
from the Nina Simone At Newport album.

Only two more singles followed. The first one's A-side, taken from Nina Simone Sings Ellington, was a version of "I Got It Bad," and on the flipside was one of her own and finest self-penned songs, "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl." Her final single paired the traditional folk standard "Little Liza Jane" with the astounding Simone original "Blackbird." More than any biography or documentary, this song shows how far she had matured artistically, revealing a glimpse of her future as a civil rights activist, and songs to come like "Mississippi Goddam" and "Young, Gifted And Black."

With these 27 songs, the Colpix singles trace Nina Simone's musical journey from jazz and folk singer to critically acclaimed songwriter.

Drawing Room Records reissues New Zealand-based Sandra Bell's second album!

Out March 30th, Net not only will be available on vinyl for the first time but the reissue also compiles two stellar singles, “Angel” and the Chord double 7 inch.

Stream "Trains" now over on Bandcamp!https://drawingroomrecords.bandcamp.com/album/net

Sandra Bell is the type of artist perhaps too easily described by pat phrases. It’s understandable, the human animal needs simplicities, but if I was in a rush, I’d say: “She’s a New Zealand musician and poet.” One might ask if she does ‘spoken word.’ Someone else might be curious as to whether she’s a ‘free spirit.’ A third might wonder what she has to say about ‘women in rock.’ By that time I would ponder another visit to Dunedin to go out to Taiaroa Head to fling myself into the ocean, exclaiming as I went, “Look that’s all too limiting and simple!”

Dunedin isn’t where the South Island-born Bell is originally from, though if you’d like a fuller story of her life and work across the world, it’s best told by Syd Newman’s overview for the Audio Culture site (http://www.audioculture.co.nz/people/sandra-bell). Dunedin is where she’s spent many years off and on recording and working and living and much more, though, and sessions from 1993 to 1995 led to the release not only of Net, her second full length solo release, but two stellar singles, “Angel” and the Chord double 7 inch. All three are collected here for the first time together as Net (Plus).

It’s often been said that New Zealand’s independent music scene, and Dunedin’s in particular, is one of a shared community, and many names familiar to listeners near and far can be found in the credits on this collection. It’s testimony to both Bell’s artistic skills and friendship that they were here supporting her vision, wherever it took her — and it ranged widely.

Recorded over some months in late 1994 and released on the shortlived Dunedin IMD label on CD only the following year, Net starts with a big brawling rocker, “Long Time,” but by the time it reaches “The Trees Can’t Dance,” everything from electric piano to Irish pipes have taken a bow. Beyond the instrumental variety, though, was the demonstration of Bell’s own ear for wry, cool vocals, unusual hooks and remarkable imagery, ranging from the personal to the natural world.

At the time of its own 1995 release on the Colorado- based Zabriskie Point label, “Angel” was the most recently recorded effort, two songs with a rough, growling edge (don’t call it grunge). Meantime, the Belgian Turbulence label, which had previously introduced Bell to Europe via a rerelease of her earlier Dreams of Falling cassette on Xpressway, put out Chord as its own final release, four engaging songs, electric and acoustic, from 1993.

As Bell’s followed her artistic drive over the years, with more releases, collaborations and journeys to her credit through to the present day, this clutch of efforts slipped into second-hand sales and file-trading. First through Bandcamp and now this physical release, it’s a pleasure to see Bell’s mid-1990s work return to the conversation properly — as well as to demonstrate a key point: a true artist can never be summed up in any one phrase, or phase.

"Leave," by barely remembered Drag City-reissued Your Food, features shed-industrial, bandsaw-jangly (atonal?) guitar support to punk-chant, for kinda catchy results. Not as intense as DC's 4ever hot-breathing prose, but wouldn't mind hearing the rest:

Poke it with a Stick -- the only record by Louisville legends Your Food -- is a sui generis gem of the American underground, now faithfully reissued for the first time by Drag City. Recorded in 1983 by four scarecrows from Kentucky subsisting largely on cheap beer and baked beans, the album is a burbling burgoo of hypnotic rhythm, uncoiling tension, and sharp invective -- a proud bastard of post-punk royalty.
Listen To "Leave" Here!
https://yourfood.bandcamp.com/album/poke-it-with-a-stick

In the fall of 1981, the residents of 1069, Louisville's original punk house, began to spy two teenagers lurking outside the decrepit environs. Eventually the teens grew bold enough to approach, and soon John Bailey and Wolf Knapp, were learning guitar and bass in the trashed rehearsal space within. Charles Schultz, who had been the drummer for Louisville's recently defunct Dickbrains (a band described by the Village Voice as freaky weirdos who couldn't fit in if they tried) started playing with John and Wolf. Douglas Maxson, the Dickbrains male singer, was lured back from New York with the promise of beer and cigarettes, and soon Your Food was playing weekly shows at the local Beat Club, mostly for free beer.

Financed by a Pell Grant and what little cash the band could scrounge, the album was cut largely live in the studio by a guy who usually recorded church groups, and self-released on the band's own Screaming Whoredog label. The prevailing themes of restlessness and isolation are palpable in songs like opener "Leave," where ennui morphs into dark comic fantasy. The punk funk of "Don't Be" fits perfectly with the downtown NYC groove of bands like ESG and Bush Tetras.

It was a golden age, but a waning one, an adolescent state before hope or commercial prospect or any plan for the future. Your Food managed three short tours in a world before cell phones, social media, or global positioning, and earned the admiration of the few who heard them. But, it all came to a spectacularly bitter end on the side of some frozen, forlorn highway in West Virginia. After the van broke down three times in four days, the band called it quits. Add this essential reissue to your collection on March 23rd!

Spiny Norman
Spiny Normen
(RidingEasy Records)
LP/CD/Digi: 3/2/2018

http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DStYvRuUQAECfx6.jpg

Spiny Normen is an incredible mid-70's Houston hard rock, progressive, psychedelic rock band (yes, all that and more) that featured mellotron, vox jaguar, crunchy, heavy guitars, flute with echo effects, and lots more. A totally lost relic this album is, recorded at the community college and never released. This band has a very English, dark, mysterious and proggy but very acid drenched feeling to it.

The band was on the second installment of the Brown Acid anthology of '60s and '70s post-proto-metal nuggets with "Bell Park Loon" that is found on the full-length as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN55-BThniA

Steve Brudniak (Vocals/Guitar) says in the press release, "we were way behind and way ahead of our time," and he was actually right! They sound like they liked prog rock but couldn't play well enough to pull it off, which makes it come off like a proto-punk Hawkwind or Uriah Heep. Anyone remember Apes, the Washington DC noise band that put out several albums in the 00's? This sounds a lot like they did and I am pretty sure Apes never heard of them.

Solaris: Sound And Vision is a collector's edition box set that includes Edward Artemiev's soundtrack to Andrey Tarkovsky's 1972 masterpiece Solaris in both LP and CD formats as well as a 96-page book of previously unreleased images from the movie set and a Blu-ray Disc of the film in its original Russian (with English subtitles).

The collaboration between Tarkovsky and Artemiev started with Solaris and would extend to two more films, Mirror and Stalker. The director was seeking a film score capable of completing, through sound, the meaningful images of his film. Artemiev was a member of the legendary Experimental Studio of Electronic Music in Moscow, a place of high experimentation in the field of the electronic music, in the context of which the ANS synthesizer was conceived and employed for the first time for music composition. Invented by Soviet engineer Evgeny Murzin, the ANS was used by Artemiev to create the special sound atmosphere that Tarkovsky was looking for.

Made in collaboration with the Andrey Tarkovsky Institute.

Wow, that looks great. Would like to hear the music by itself, outside the gravitational pull of the movie, which would be great to have on blu-ray, not that it isn't immersive already (grab a coffee or three before descent).

SLEEPYHEAD's 'Future Exhibit Goes Here' Double LP Reissue - Out April 13th on Drawing Room Records!

There’s rock and roll mythology, and then there’s 90’s indie rock mythology…Unfortunately, stories about then NYC’s Sleepyhead are really neither. Michael Galinsky, Rachael McNally, and Chris O’Rourke, NYU students more into music than books, form a band, practice, release singles and an album on a non-descript independent label, tour, and then again practice, release another album, tour and play Lollapalooza’s second stage, and so on…Yeah, it is neither very glamorous nor salacious. It’s simply three individuals playing, recording, and releasing music, as that’s what lady destiny called them to do.

Born in 1988, Sleepyhead was certainly a band of the era, pre-internet, pre-cell phone, and fully dependent on Xeroxed zine culture and passed around hand-written knowledge on all things music. It was definitely slower times in terms of technology, but one that was still full of young adventurers eager to play music and see the world in a used van on their own terms. With things always rapidly evolving, some things will always stay near the same. In a certain sense, it is through the driving culture provided with a used van that really allowed Sleepyhead to discover itself and thrive. Tours (on their own, with rad bands like Polvo, or even for lower-tiered Lollapalooza sets) helped hone the band’s vibe and distinctiveness. Many of these travels of Sleepyhead are the impetus for the stories told in Suki Hawley’s 1994 classic film, Half-Cocked, co-written by Hawley and Michael Galinsky. Additionally, by the time of this awesome visual documentation, Sleepyhead was at its initial apex in terms of sound and creativity with the results recorded on the two mid-90’s albums Starduster (1994) and Communist Love Songs (1996).

Nearly forgotten after over two decades for very uninteresting reasons, Drawing Room brings new life to this era of Sleepyhead with its release of Future Exhibit Goes Here. Presented as a deluxe set, Future Exhibit…contains completely re-mastered versions of both Starduster (LP 1) and Communist Love Songs (LP 2), two albums that showcase the band’s best penchants for noisy and naïve hooky guitar tunes (LP 1) and pure direct power pop (LP 2). Additionally, this new set marks the first time ever release of Communist Love Songs on vinyl. Included with Future Exhibit…is an 11×11” booklet full of Michael Galinsky’s wonderful black and white photography of Sleepyhead’s 90’s road excursions and notes and details from all three members.

Mastered by Josh Bonati and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, the 2xLP of Future Exhibit Goes Here comes in a wide-spine sleeve accompanied by a 14-page 11×11“ booklet full of Michael Galinsky’s black and white photography, and notes and ephemera from all members of Sleepyhead.
A re-mastered digital release is also available.

Future Exhibit Goes Here is out April 13th, 2018 on Drawing Room Records.

Praise for SLEEPYHEAD:

"Alternately silly and sexy, and always tuneful as all get out, Communist Love Songs is a non-stop delight." - AllMusic

"Twinky pop students of Sonic Youth, New York's Sleepyhead wields noisy guitars and some of the airiest vocals on the planet." - Trouser Press

"Nerd punk for now people." - SPIN

"Sleepyhead was a band that "overemphasized the noise over the pop in their noise pop sound." - AllMusic

Ursula K. Le Guin & Todd Barton – Music and Poetry Of The Kesh

Music and Poetry of the Kesh is the documentation of an invented Pacific Coast peoples from a far distant time, and the soundtrack of famed science fiction author, Ursula K. Le Guin’s Always Coming Home. In the novel, the story of Stone Telling, a young woman of the Kesh, is woven within a larger anthropological folklore and fantasy.

The ways of the Kesh were originally presented in 1985 as a five hundred plus page book accompanied with illustrations of instruments and tools, maps, a glossary of terms, recipes, poems, an alphabet (Le Guin’s conlang, so she could write non-English lyrics), and with early editions, a cassette of “field recordings” and indigenous song. Le Guin wanted to hear the people she’d imagined; she embarked on an elaborate process with her friend Todd Barton to invoke their spirit and tradition.

For Music and Poetry of the Kesh, the words and lyrics are attributed to Le Guin as composed by Barton, an Oregon-based musician, composer and Buchla synthesist (the two worked together previously on public radio projects). But the cassette notes credit the sounds and voices to the world of the Kesh, making origins ambiguous. For instance, “The River Song” description reads, “The prominent rhythm instrument is the doubure binga, a set of nine brass bowls struck with cloth-covered wooden mallets, here played by Ready.”

According to writer and long-time friend of LeGuin, Moe Bowstern (who pens the liners for the Freedom To Spend edition of Kesh), Barton built and then taught himself to play several instruments of Le Guin’s design, among them “the seven-foot horn known to the Kesh as the Houmbúta and the Wéosai Medoud Teyahi bone flute.” Barton’s crafting of original instruments lends an other-worldly texture to the recordings of the Kesh, not unlike fellow builders Bobby Brown and Lonnie Holley. Bowstern notes, “Other musician / makers have crafted their own Kesh instruments after encountering the earlier cassette recordings that accompanied some editions of the book.”

Both Barton and Le Guin are sensitive to the sovereignty of indigenous Californians and were careful not to trample the traditions of the Tolowa people who lived in the valley long before the Kesh. “You research deeply, and then you bring your own voice to the table,” said Barton. Within the Kesh culture, the numbers four and five shape the lives, society and rituals. Barton composed loosely around these numbers, patiently listening to the land of Napa Valley for signs and audio signals from the natural elements. Todd incorporated ambient sounds of the creek by Le Guin’s house and a campfire they built together.

The songs of Kesh are joyful, soothing and meditative, while the instrumental works drift far past the imaginary lands. “Heron Dance” is an uplifting first track, featuring a Wéosai Medoud Teyahi (made from a deer or lamb thigh bone with a cattail reed) and the great Houmbúta (used for theatre and ceremony). “A Music of the Eighth House” sends gossamer waves of the faintest sounds to “float on the wind.” Like the languages invented in the vocal work of Anna Homler, Meredith Monk, and Elizabeth Fraser, the Kesh songs and poems play with the shape of voice.

The Music and Poetry of the Kesh cassette was meant to accompany and enhance the experience of reading Always Coming Home. Presented in this edition as a long-playing album, where only traces of the book linger (the jacket offers some of Le Guin’s illustration, and a letterpressed bookmark featuring the the narrative modes of western civilization and the Kesh valley is included), the music alone breaking the silence of what might be. It can transport—offering a landscape for imagining a future homecoming. One in which we are balanced, peaceful, and tend to the earth and its creatures.

A line from “Sun Dance Poem” reminds us, “We are nothing much without one another.” Freedom To Spend gives new life to the recordings of the Kesh people in the first ever vinyl edition of Music and Poetry of the Kesh also availably on digital formats on March 23, 2018. The LP will include a spot printed jacket with Ursula’s illustrations from Always Coming Home, a facsimile of the original lyric sheet, liner notes by Moe Bowstern, a multi-format digital download code and a bookmark letter pressed by Stumptown Printers in Portland, OR.

First edition limited to 1,000 copies.

Get a little vegan buzz just reading that---is it more music than the orginal cassette that came with the book? (Why didn't I ever buy that original set)

Nice---Kill Rock Stars just posted the album that Elliott Smith hadn't quite finished before he died--15 tracks, now on 2-LP vinyl edition:

FOREVER CHANGES: 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Love's 1967 Masterpiece Celebrated With A 4CD/DVD/LP Collection Packed With
Various Mixes Of The Original, Rare And Unreleased Tracks, Plus A 1968 Promo
Video

The Set Will Be Available On April 6 From Rhino

LOS ANGELES - Love's FOREVER CHANGES is the psychedelic folk-rock pioneers' finest achievement. Mostly overlooked when it was released in 1967, today the album is considered an indispensable masterpiece. In 2008, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and - in 2012 - the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry.

Rhino will celebrate the acclaimed album's golden anniversary with an extensive 4CD/DVD/LP collection housed in a beautifully illustrated 12 x 12 hardbound book that features a newly written essay and track-by-track notes by music historian Ted Olsen. FOREVER CHANGES: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available on April 6 for $99.98.

The set features a few firsts for the album, including the CD-debut of a remastered version made by its original co-producer and engineer Bruce Botnick, as well as the first-ever release of the mono version on CD. Also included are alternate mixes of the album, as well as a selection of rare and unreleased singles and studio outtakes. Botnick's stereo remaster of the original album also makes its vinyl debut on the LP included with this set. It was cut from high resolution digital audio by celebrated audio engineer Bernie Grundman.

The DVD that accompanies the anniversary collection includes a 24/96 stereo mix of the album version of the original album remastered by Botnick. Also featured is "Your Mind And We Belong Together," a rare promotional video directed by Elektra producer Mark Abramson that was originally released in 1968.

Recorded during the Summer of Love in Hollywood, CA, Forever Changes is the group's most fully realized studio effort, featuring Arthur Lee (vocals, guitar), Johnny Echols (lead guitar), Bryan MacLean (rhythm guitar, vocals), Ken Forssi (bass) and Michael Stuart (drums, percussion). The original album introduced classics like "Andmoreagain," "Red Telephone," "A House Is Not A Motel" and "Alone Again Or."

FOREVER CHANGES: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION boasts more than a dozen rarities, including single versions of "Alone Again Or" and "A House Is Not A Motel" that are available now for the first time since 1967. Two other recordings on the set have never been released: the backing track for "Live And Let Live" and an outtake backing track for "Wonder People (I Do Wonder)."

Just got my double Roxy Music CD in the mail yesterday. Hardcover book style, many pages of liner notes in tiny, tiny text. Second disc is BBC sessions.

I was just randomly looking at the 80s noise chart on RYM, looked to see if High Rise - II is on Bandcamp, and coincidentally it's being reissued on Friday! Japanese heavy noise psych from 1986

Donald Alexander Strachan and The Freedom Ensemble
Soul Translation: A Spiritual Suite
Universal Sound

Soul Jazz Records/Universal Sound are releasing “Soul Translation: A Spiritual Suite" a superb lost USA deep jazz independent private-press album originally self-published by Donald Alexander Strachan and the Freedom Ensemble on Triad Music Concepts in 1975.

This great soulful/spiritual jazz album was the only album that Strachan released and consequently has become a lost rarity - a must for fans of Tribe, Strata-East and other conscious jazz from the 1970s and features in Gilles Peterson/Soul Jazz Records' Freedom, Rhythm and Sound book.

Donald Alexander Strachan is composer, conductor, guitarist, vocalist and more leading a large 11-piece line-up that includes Jay Hoggard on vibes.

Strachan studied in New York City in the 1970s with composer/saxophonist Sam Rivers and Ghanaian Drum-master Abraham Adzenyah as well as avant-garde guitarist/composer Bruce Johnson all of who helped shape his unique sound.

In the 1980s Strachan entered into the collaborative world of cinema by composing musical scores and has been involved in cinema ever since both musically, as a scriptwriter and director. Donald Alexander Strachan and the Freedom Ensemble’s “Soul Translation: A Spiritual Suite" is a unique product of Strachan’s multicultural and African-American heritage and aesthetic - polyrhythmically complex and spiritually intense.

This is a bespoke high quality hardback-cased Japanese thick card CD edition with exact-reproduction artwork from the original album.

The 180-gram vinyl thick card exact-reproduction artwork is strictly limted to 1000 copies wordwide.

Soul of A Nation
Afro-Centric Visions in the Age of Black Power: Underground Jazz, Street Funk & The Roots of Rap 1964-79
Soul Jazz Records

https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/img/SEJkUmQ0QThXYSs4QTl2VzNKL2pQZz09/sjr-lp393-soul-of-a-nation-sleeve.jpeg

his album is released this week to coincide with the massive new exhibition Soul of A Nation - Art in the Age of Black Power now on at Tate Modern, London until Oct 2017.

For more information on the TATE MODERN exhibition go here
http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/soul-nation-art-age-black-power

Watch Channel 4 news piece here https://www.channel4.com/news/soul-of-a-nation-at-tate-modern?intcmp=search_results_page_bottom_p

The album shows how the ideals of the civil rights movement, black power and black nationalism influenced the evolvement of radical African-American music in the United States of America in the intensely political and revolutionary period at the end of the 1960s following the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and the rise of the Black Panther party.

Featuring groundbreaking artists such as Gil Scott-Heron, Roy Ayers, Don Cherry, Oneness of Juju, Sarah Webster Fabio, Horace Tapscott, Phil Ranelin and many others, Soul of A Nation shows how political themes led to the rise of ‘conscious’ black music as new afro-centric styles combined the musical radicalism and spirituality of John Coltrane and radical avant-garde jazz music alongside the intense funk and soul of James Brown and Aretha Franklin and the urban poetry and proto-rap of the streets.

The Soul of a Nation exhibition draws on the links between Black art forms – art, music, poetry - and how they came together during the civil rights and black power era as part of the wider black arts movement across the United States.

Iconic African-Amercian revolutionary figures such as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Angela Davis, John Coltrane, Muhammad Ali all appear in the radical artworks of Barkley L. Hendricks, Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, Lorraine O’Grady and Betye Saar.

Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records) will appear with the curators on the panel of Jazz for Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power discussion at the gallery as part of the show.

The Soul of a Nation album comes with extensive sleeve-notes and exclusive photography in a large 36-page outsize booklet and slipcase. Double gatefold vinyl album edition comes with full colour inners + bonus download code and includes full sleeve-notes/photography.

Deutsche Elektronische Musik 3
Experimental German Rock and Electronic Music 1971-81
Soul Jazz Records

This latest installment in Soul Jazz Records’ successful Deutsche Elektronische Musik series delves deeper into the German nation’s vaults to bring a fascinating new collection that again brings together a selection of classic German electronic and rock groups, including Neu!, Cluster, Popol Vuh, La Düsseldorf, Agitation Free, alongside a host of rare tracks by lesser known artists which includes Michael Bundt, Bröselmaschine, Dronsz, Achim Reichel and others.

The music of Deutsche Elektronische Musik 3 ranges from the introverted pastoralism of Hans Joachim Roedelius and Bröselmaschine, to the angular and futuristic electronic experimentations of Klauss Weiss, Pyrolator, Deuter, Michael Bundt and others, to the proto-punk of La Düsseldorf and the heavy space, progressive and cosmic rock of Missus Beastly, Niagara and Dyzan.

The music on Deutsche Elektronische Musik 3 was all recorded in the 1970s up to the early 1980s, at a time when forward-thinking German electronic and rock groups were searching for a new musical identity in order to separate themselves from both the cultural legacy of post-world war two Germany as well the ‘cultural imperialism’ of USA and UK rock. In this process German groups created some of the most unique and inspired music, the defining motorik beat alongside a host of ethno-musical influences from far afield – including Turkey, India, Brazil – as well as the musical and futurist possibilities of developments in electronics and technology itself.

Deutsche Elektronische Musik 3 is released as a heavyweight 3xLP, deluxe double CD pack and digital release. The new extensive sleevenotes are by David Stubbs, who is the author of the acclaimed book, ‘Future Days: Krautrock and the Building of Modern Germany’ (Faber & Faber).

Space, Energy and Light
Experimental Electronic and Acoustic Soundscapes 1961 - 88

Soul Jazz Records

https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/img/aWVya2c4b1ZmRFZKUlhGaHRKa3g3Zz09/sjr-lp392-space-energy-light-sleeve.jpg

Soul Jazz Records’ new Space, Energy and Light is a collection of music by early electronic and synthesizer pioneers (from the 1960s through the 1970s), mid-1970s proto-new age gurus and 1980s guerrilla D-I-Y cassette-era electronic artists, spanning in total over a near 30-year time frame. All of these artists used electronic advancements in music technology as a means of exploring not only space and the idea of the future, but also of looking inwards to the soul and of creating music in harmony with the natural world.

From computer software and hardware experimentalists and sound pioneers such as Laurie Spiegel and Kevin Braheny, as well as Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company – the first synthesizer ensemble created in collaboration with Robert Moog – through to musique concrète experimentation, the album shows how technological advancements and creative artistic expression often went hand in hand.

In the mid-1970s artists Steven Halpern and Iaxos were instrumental in creating proto-new age music, experimenting in both the healing properties of sound and its relationship with the natural world. These artists also pioneered a new self-contained and underground D-I-Y approach to music, creating their own record labels, forming new distribution networks (with albums sold in meditation centres, health food stores and ashrams) far away from the commercialism of the mainstream music industry. In the early 1980s after the revolution of punk, these D-I-Y attitudes and ideas appeared once more in the growth of the distinctly anti-commercial and underground cassette-only careers of artists such as Germany’s Stratis and Carl Matthews in Britain.

This album is available as a heavyweight triple vinyl album (plus download code), CD and digital release. Artwork includes some of the earliest photography of the Plieades star cluster dating from the 1880s.

In the fertile terrain of New Zealand's 1980s post-punk scene, few figures loom as large as the Jefferies brothers. Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies – the primary forces behind This Kind of Punishment – wrote some of the best music to come out on Flying Nun, Xpressway or elsewhere. A dizzying mix of pastoral ballads and DIY experimentation, TKP's songwriting was at once classic and acutely raw.

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0219/8812/products/SV141_web_1024x1024.jpg

On their self-titled debut, the Jefferies brothers and Chris Matthews eschew the punk-informed modes of their contemporaries for a sound that is decidedly more deliberate / intimate. Rooted in a marriage between simplistic, classically-influenced piano, alternating guitar chime and sparse, subtle violin drone, This Kind Of Punishment is a contemplative, inventive collection of ideas corralled via economic 4-track recordings, minimal instrumentation and an austere performance style entirely of the Jefferies' own making. Songs like "After The Fact," "In View Of The Circumstances" and "Two Minutes Drowning" boast a living quality whereby the listener can act as bystander to these moments of creation – a trait that the band would expand upon throughout the course of their brief tenure.

First-time vinyl reissue since its initial release in 1983.

https://soundcloud.com/superiorviaduct/this-kind-of-punishment-after-the-fact

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0219/8812/products/SV142_web_1024x1024.jpg

Among This Kind Of Punishment's myriad recordings, A Beard Of Bees best outlines the collective vision of the Jefferies brothers. Their classic second album feels more meticulous than its predecessor, proffering a grey, near-Mancunian influence that serves as both touchstone and springboard for the proceedings. The unique maneuvering on "Trepidation" is a marvel: guitar sweetness shifting toward melancholic piano and ending with their combined shimmer. Conversely, the augmented VU-inspired noise of "East Meets West" positions itself as the album's prime moment of severity – creepily building toward horror-show screams that inch to a buried, found-sound resolution.

Originally self-released in 1984, A Beard Of Bees has been out of print for almost 25 years.

Trailed a year ago by Jonny Trunk, and finally out - well, as a download. Vinyl coming soon? (it's currently showing as 'out of stock' on the Trunk Records shop website)

https://downloads.openimp.com/tid/2ef81ac99de59087d1cdc460d80b61a1c029eb89/fniohye/hechqkzkhq/38860255160054.jpeg

As the opening track of Trunk’s 2007 Fuzzy Felt Folk compilation, the 'I Start Counting' cue would have seemed to many an exquisite piece of pastoral jazz-licked folk from the master composer Kirchin. Now in situ, heading up the full score to the 1970 horror flick of the same name, it takes on new hues, its ethereal motif repeated throughout the 24-minute soundtrack, melting at one point into Eastern percussion en route to a full free jazz deconstruction. After some particularly doom-laden strings mid-way through the score, the main theme rises back into view, now sporting organ grooves and a country backing. Yes, patently Kirchin heard sound in a way we mere laggards could never really understand.

To further prove his deft mastery, the unreleased score found on tapes labelled “Third World Documentary” drops in on Kirchin in the 80s, but, really, shows us yet more timeless synthesis as dramatic as that on I Start Counting, albeit put to very different ends. Here Kirchin carefully harnesses then-modern electronics to a jazz rhythm section, producing something that straddles time zones, and perhaps even edges towards creating his own.

For further evidence of how ahead of his time he was, the final track sees him pull together some programmed beats that, amazingly, presage Soul II Soul’s Keep On Movin’, with added Kirchin textures on top. Worlds within worlds, indeed…

LORD OF THE RINGS SOUNDTRACKS

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring: The Complete Recordings

Limited-Edition Boxed Sets Available From Rhino Starting On April 6

LOS ANGELES - The Lord of the Rings is one of most successful trilogies in film history earning 17 Academy Awards ® including three for its music. Beyond critical acclaim, the music from the films also enjoyed wide commercial success, collectively selling 7 million copies. Directed by Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings films are based on the popular J.R.R. Tolkien novel of the same name.

Rhino is returning to Middle-earth on April 6 with the first soundtrack from the Trilogy, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, available on vinyl for the first time as a 5-LP boxed set ($119.98). Housed in a collector's box with red leather style spine, the collection is limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies on red vinyl. The soundtrack will also be available as a 3-CD disc set ($79.98) plus 1 Blu-ray audio disc containing high-resolution 5.1 and Stereo mixes of the entire score, a reactivation of the 2005 box set featuring the entire score from the extended versions of the film. Both versions come with extensive liner notes from author Doug Adams who analyzes many of the themes and motifs used throughout the score.

The music for all three films was composed, orchestrated and conducted by Howard Shore. The music he wrote for The Fellowship of the Ring was performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with contributions by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the London Voices and the London Oratory School Schola. The soundtrack also highlights two original songs written and performed by Enya: "May It Be" and "Aníron (Theme for Aragorn and Arwen)." The soundtrack was certified platinum in the U.S. alone, and sold extremely well around the world. It won the Academy Award ® for Best Original Score, as well as the Grammy ® for Best Score Soundtrack Album.

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS is the first of in a series of three releases that will also feature The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) on color vinyl for the first time. More information on the series of releases will be available at a later date.

The Complete Recordings is last year's most important archival soundtrack release, expanding and preserving one of the finest and most significant recent scores in all of film music. Shore's Lord Of The Rings trilogy is an operatic symphony that is among the finest musical accomplishments of the last half-century. The plethora of unreleased material on this beautifully packaged edition is mouth-watering at the least, and the sonic dynamic achieved on the surround sound DVD of the entire 180-minute score is simply astonishing. - Randall Larson from Music From the Movies, 2005

There's probably never been as ambitious a film score as Howard Shore's 10-hour epic for the "Lord of the Rings" series... the music is rich and complex, drawing on a vast range of styles and exotic instruments to evoke J.R.R. Tolkien's world of elves, hobbits and warlocks. But it's more than just background music: Shore uses an elaborate leitmotif technique (where musical themes are associated with specific characters or ideas, and are developed across the entire series) to hold the sprawling tale together. Lush, beautiful and full of intriguing surprises, it's no wonder that it's become one of the most popular film scores ever written. - Stephen Brookes for the Washington Post, May, 2008

The Lord of the Rings No. 1 Best Movie Score of the 21st Century - IndieWire, February, 2018

The original Live At Leeds, minus the performance of Tommy added on the reissue, still invades my headspace pretty often, no warning.

And I don't miss the bonus Tommy, though should be dynamic as possible, considering the heat of the night otherwise.

Pat Ament "Songs By Pat Ament" LP (Grapefruit)

In 1971, at the age of 25, Pat Ament self-released his debut album, Songs By Pat Ament, in a very limited run for friends and local shops. The album is sparse and moody, conjuring a space not unlike the one that Songs of Leonard Cohen occupies, featuring Ament on Wurlitzer with a jazz drummer and a guitarist alternating between acoustic and electric. It’s dark and at times forlorn, with meditations on yearning and loss and love. It’s ideal long-night-of-the-soul music. The lyricism evokes Dylan, Cohen, Tim Hardin and Bill Fay.

When he released Songs, Ament was already a world renowned mountain climber, and he became famous for pioneering 60’s and 70’s ascents in Colorado and Yosemite. He wrote poetic books and essays on climbing, including biographies of legendary climbers Royal Robbins and John Gill. Through the years he’s balanced multiple simultaneous careers as artist, photographer, filmmaker, chess master, karate black belt, lecturer, teacher, and, yes, singer-songwriter.

Pat Ament’s musical mastery was clear right out of the gate but it was only one of his many interests. Perhaps if he hadn’t been moved to pursue life’s other tempting summits and focused solely on music, he’d be as well known for his songs as for his climbing. Grapefruit is extremely proud to reissue this rare and virtually unknown singer-songwriter masterpiece, sourced from original sources and under Ament's supervision, with original artwork and deluxe Stoughton tip-on jacket. The record also comes with a bonus career retrospective CD entitled Time Moved On of additional songs hand-picked by the artist.

Keep 'em coming.
None such w this, alas:

In advance of Led Zeppelin’s 50th Anniversary celebration, slated to commence this September, the band will wet fan’s appetites with their first ever Record Store Day release on April 21st, 2018.

Produced by Jimmy Page and pressed on yellow vinyl, the limited-edition 7” single will feature two previously unheard studio mixes, handpicked by Page – the “Sunset Sound Mix” of “Rock And Roll” b/w the “Olympic Studios Mix” of “Friends.”

The previously unreleased version of “Rock And Roll” provides an additional peek into the fabled “Sunset Sound Mixes” of “Led Zeppelin IV.” Only two previous “Sunset Sound Mixes” have been released, the first being the version of “When The Levee Breaks” on the original album, and the second the “Stairway To Heaven” mix that debuted on the 2014 deluxe edition.

The previously unheard “Olympic Studios Mix” of “Friends” is a stripped-down version, without the orchestration of the final mix, offering a true fly-on-the-wall feel from the band’s recording sessions for “Led Zeppelin III” at the Headley Grange recording and rehearsal venue in Headley, Hampshire, England.

THE FLAMING LIPS REVISIT RESTLESS ERA

Rhino Celebrates Oklahoma's Fearless Freaks With Two Newly Remastered
Collections Of Their Early Work

A Single-Disc Compilation Will Be Available April 20
Followed By A Six-CD Boxed Set On May 25

LOS ANGELES - The Flaming Lips have pushed the envelope and bent boundaries for more than two decades with the band's Grammy®-winning music and ground-breaking concerts. This year, Rhino and Warner Bros. Records will celebrate Oklahoma's most famous freaks with an ambitious reissue program, kicking off with two releases that spotlight the joyous weirdness the band recorded for Restless Records before signing with Warner Bros. in 1991.

It begins with SCRATCHING THE DOOR: THE FIRST RECORDINGS OF THE FLAMING LIPS, a single-disc compilation that features music recorded by the band's original lineup. The 19-track collection will be available on April 20 for $14.98. It will be followed by SEEING THE UNSEEABLE: THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS OF THE FLAMING LIPS 1986-1990, a six-CD boxed set that includes their four Restless Records studio albums and two discs of rarities, available on May 25 for $34.98. Both releases will also be available on digital download and streaming services, with over 40 tracks making their digital debut. 2018 also sees a slew of vinyl reissues from The Flaming Lips, including remasters of the Restless albums. These will feature some tracks appearing on vinyl for the very first time.

All of the music on SCRATCHING THE DOOR and SEEING THE UNSEEABLE has been remastered from original sources by the band's longtime musical foil and producer, David Fridmann with help from the Lips' Wayne Coyne and Michael Ivins.

SCRATCHING THE DOOR highlights tracks recorded by The Flaming Lips' original line-up, which featured Wayne Coyne's brother Mark on vocals. The album includes the band's first and second cassette demos, in addition to The Flaming Lips first self-released EP, which has been remastered from the original 1/4" analog tape master. This marks the first time all of these recordings have been collected together on a single release. Among the other featured tracks are covers of The Who's "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown" and the theme song from the 1960's Batman television series, which previously appeared on Rykodisc's 2002 compilation, Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid.

SEEING THE UNSEEABLE brings back into print (physically - they are available digitally) all four studio albums that the band released on Restless Records between 1984 and 1990: Hear It Is (1986), Oh My Gawd!!!...The Flaming Lips (1987), Telepathic Surgery (1989) and In A Priest Driven Ambulance (With Silver Sunshine Stares) (1990). All of these have been remastered from the original 1/4" analog tape masters and include sonic treasures such as "Godzilla Flick," "Unconsciously Screaming," "One Million Billionth Of A Millisecond On A Sunday Morning" and their cover of the classic "(What A) Wonderful World."

The set is also packed with rare recordings originally released as b-sides, flexi discs, and on various compilations like, the Sub Pop single "Strychnine/Peace, Love And Understanding" and a cover of "After The Gold Rush" from a 1989 Neil Young tribute album Also included is The Mushroom Tapes, the series of demos for the band's final Restless album, In A Priest Driven Ambulance, only previously issued on the Rykodisc compilation CD, The Day They Shot A Hole In the Jesus Egg.

Hate to admit it but that Flaming Lips box is actually kind of appealing, especially since it's apparently pretty cheap (Amazon had it for $35 pre-order). I could tolerate them all the way up to Hit To Death In The Future Head.

MARNIE STERN'S CLASSIC ALBUM THIS IS IT & I AM IT...

GETS REPRESSED FOR RECORD STORE DAY 2018

"Her songs always at least suggest pop, and the sense of tune at their core adds an inviting thrill to Stern's fitful guitar and Zach Hill's ridiculously, miraculously agitated drums" - The AV Club

Visionary guitarist Marnie Stern's critically acclaimed 2008 album, This Is It & I Am It & You Are It & So Is That & He Is It & She Is It & It Is It & That Is That, has been repressed on clear w/ electric yellow swirl vinyl for this year's Record Store Day, April 21st, 2018! This Is It... was produced and features drumming by Zach Hill (of Hella and Death Grips) and includes fan-favorite songs like "Transformer," "The Crippled Jazzer," and "Ruler." This is the first time the album has been available on vinyl since its initial 2008 pressing of 1,000 copies.

On March 23, Craft Recordings will release The Thousand Incarnations Of The Rose: American Primitive Guitar and Banjo (1963-1974) on 2LP, CD, and digital. This new compilation celebrates the groundbreaking, inventive approach to traditional instrumentation brought forward by an impressive group of maverick artists whose interpretations of folk, blues, and traditional song gave rise to one of American music's most unique and influential stylistic schools, known today as American Primitive. Featured artists on the compilation, which serves as a "Who's Who" of the genre, include John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Robbie Basho, Harry Taussig and more. The two-LP vinyl edition features deluxe gatefold packaging, and a tipped-in booklet containing new liner notes by compilation producer Glenn Jones and illustrations by Drew Christie. The CD configuration comes housed in a softpack and features a booklet containing both Jones' notes and Christie's artwork.

Preorder the release on Amazon or find it at your local record store.

The Craft Recordings release comes in connection with a three-day festival by the same name, The Thousand Incarnations of the Rose, which promises to be a music festival unlike any other. Taking place at multiple venues in Takoma Park, MD from April 13th - 15th, the festival brings together for the first time more than 25 acoustic fingerstyle guitar and banjo players from every era of the American Primitive/Guitar Soli movement and every corner of the United States; pairing legends such as Peter Lang, Max Ochs, Harry Taussig, and Peter Walker with modern day heavy hitters like Glenn Jones, Marisa Anderson, Daniel Bachman, and Nathan Bowles. There will also be documentary screenings and rare footage of John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and Jack Rose, plus panel discussions with scholars and musicians. It is only fitting that Takoma Park, Fahey's boyhood home, will host the festival this year, which commemorates the 60th anniversary of his very first recordings.

MORE ABOUT AMERICAN PRIMITIVE GUITAR:

When guitarist John Fahey sat down to record The Takoma Park Pool Hall Blues for Fonotone Records in 1958 he could not have imagined that he was starting an artistic movement or that generations of players would follow in his footsteps. The number of players who have since taken up the American Primitive mantle has grown exponentially year-by-year and album-by-album. The term has come to refer to a certain approach to playing the guitar (or banjo) that favors emotion and mood over virtuosity for its own sake. With his minimalistic, self-taught approach to writing and recording, incorporating folk, blues, American roots music, and sound collage, Fahey laid the foundation for others to follow in his style. Leo Kottke, Peter Lang, and Robbie Basho, Fahey's labelmates on the Takoma label, all shared aspects of Fahey's approach to fingerstyle acoustic guitar, expanding and building upon the sounds that Fahey brought forward with his inventive approach to the instrument. Later, contemporary artists like Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Ryley Walker, and Vetiver, among many others, would cite Fahey as being highly influential on developing their own signature styles and approaches to music.

This initial volume of the band’s complete recorded output comes in a limited-edition CD box set, each featuring Def Leppard’s first four studio albums — along with some choice bonus live and studio material — all spread across 7CDs. The Volume One collection contains all of Def Leppard’s iconic 1980s recordings – On Through The Night, High ‘N’ Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria - with reproductions of the original packaging. Furthermore, this collection includes a replica 3-inch CD of the band’s original independent EP, the self-titled The Def Leppard E.P. The Volume One collection also houses bonus material including Live At The LA Forum 1983, originally released as a bonus disc in the deluxe CD version of Pyromania. The box set also includes Rarities Volume 1 which has been specially compiled by Joe Elliott, containing rare B-sides and recordings from Def Leppard’s early years, all in a newly commissioned sleeve. Each album in the Volume One box set was mastered by longtime band producer/soundmaster Ronan McHugh and frontman/vocalist Joe Elliott at Joe’s Garage in Dublin, Ireland, and cut by Greg Moore. Housed in rigid boxes, the Volume One collection also contains a hardback book with rare photos by longstanding band confidant Ross Halfin and liner notes by Classic Rock’s Paul Elliott. Def Leppard bandmembers Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, drummer Rick Allen, and guitarist Phil Collen have all also contributed their personal introductions to the collection.

Major upheavals at Sony Legacy, one of the best reissue/box set/catalog operations in the industry.

For 28 years, [Sony] has been host to one of the most popular catalog labels in the business, Legacy, which has won multiple Grammy Awards for beautifully curated collections from Sony’s vast repertoire — which includes Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson and many others — as well as new releases from heritage artists like Willie Nelson and Earth, Wind & Fire. But in recent months management found the business to be too oriented toward physical releases, and a major reorganization is under way, a source close to the situation tells Variety. By mutual consent, Legacy president Adam Block agreed to step down earlier this year, and longtime publicity chief Tom Cording is transitioning to a consulting role; several other staffers have or will leave the company.

Yet Legacy, which is housed within Sony’s Commercial Music Group under the direction of president Richard Story, is also staffing up in the digital space, with nine new roles and more likely to come. The source tells Variety that the company felt renewed urgency in realizing it did not have sufficient staffers specializing in deep catalog, streaming, marketing and analytics. The insider stressed that the company will continue to release lavish boxed sets and other physical product, but it has moved to correct that imbalance.

Promoting catalog on streaming is a dramatically different proposition than pushing physical product, according to music-retail veteran Amy Dietz, exec VP and GM of global distribution and services platform InGrooves, who spent 15 years as an executive at Warner Music’s Alternative Distribution Alliance. “Format changes have always given catalog a bump,” she says. “But what’s different now is the idea of lifetime value — before, you were trying to get people to buy something once, but now you’re trying to get people to keep coming back.”

Formed in Stratford, near New Plymouth, New Zealand in 1981, Nocturnal Projections was the explosive project of legendary and prolific brothers Graeme and Peter Jefferies (who would later form This Kind of Punishment before launching their solo careers), who along with friends Brett Jones and Gordon Rutherford, created some of the most energetic and influential avant-garde punk rock to emerge from the country.

Largely ignored during their tenure (but revered and referenced in the years after their breakup) and often compared to UK contemporaries like Joy Division, Comsat Angels, The Fall, or Wire, Nocturnal Projections stood well apart - never enjoying the luxuries of unlimited studio time, music videos or international fame, the NPs possessed a driven, rough-hewn serrated edge that cut through the lot comparisons to the UK post-punk exports of the era. They were ahead of their time, completely singular, and for those that had the benefit of seeing Nocturnal Projections play live – formative, with a dedicated cult following to this day.

As residents of New Plymouth’s Lion Tavern during their first year as a band, they perfected their soaring, impactful live set locally (often as the only band, without an opener and 3 hours to fill!) before heading off to Auckland in January of 1982, performing with bands like The Fall, John Cooper Clarke, and New Order at venues like The Mainstreet Cabaret, The Rumba Bar and Reverb Room. *The band recorded three EPs at Stebbing Studios in Auckland: The self-titled and self-released 7” single released April 1st of 1982, with the “Another Year” 12” EP following later that year. Their self-titled three song 12” was recorded in 1983, and released by the band posthumously that June, after the band called it quits. The Jefferies would move on and regroup with Rutherford and sound engineer Andrew Frengley shortly after the NPs fell apart to work under the This Kind of Punishment banner.

Complete Studio Recordings comprises the three original Nocturnal Projections studio records, direct to board recordings on a 24 track and not a synthesizer to be found! This release is a crucial part of New Zealand’s punk history, remastered and collected for existing fans and new audiences.

Frantic and fast punk anthems like Nerve Ends In Power Lines, Isn’t That Strange, and In Purgatory are a shot in the gut, while slower, more introspective tracks like Difficult Days and You’ll Never Know reveal what the band had in store later with TKP. Nocturnal Projections are hard to pin down: bright, slashing, and prominent guitars with driving solid basslines and drums in tight lockstep, all with Peter Jefferies’ urgent signature baritone vocals soaring alongside – the result is still perhaps the most energetic, unique, and fresh music to ever emerge from the post-punk scene.

Inmates In Images pulls the best of the best from board recordings of live sets between 1981 and 1983, including the never-before-released tracks: “Blank Faces” and “Late Night”, along with unheard versions of previously released songs - and includes Peter and Graeme’s song “Walk In A Straight Line”, written in October of 1980 and originally intended for their earlier band The Plastic Bags.

We were better live. If you went to the shows that’s when you really got Nocturnal Projections. What you have here is an attempt to document those performances. Much debate, trawling of archives, and careful re-mastering has gone into this set. If you weren’t there, then this is probably as close as you’re gonna get to it. If you were, then I hope this album brings back some memories. Certainly works for me.
- Peter Jefferies. December, 2017

A IS FOR BOXSET
(well, technically it's a binder)
B IS FOR REBAJAS

..C is for CDs! As in, no Bitchin Bajas release has ever been issued on CD - until this new boxset! Rebajas is the name of the boxset, which collects all their albums up to this point for the first time on non-LP or -CS format - and while the album title doesn't mean what you think it does, the collection does: nearly seven hours of organs, synths, saxes, field recordings, ambience, drone and minimalism, inducing equilibrium with a seemingly limitless onslaught that begs to be thrown into the multi-disc CD changer and NEVER removed! Specially packaged to replicate the eternal essence of listening to Bitchin Bajas, which includes sitting around with a 12" jacket in front of you, Rebajas is definitive, adding via quantitative measures in a way that equals their qualitative streak (still unbroken). There aren't many of these being made (because, you know, CDs) - so don't sleep! Preorder Rebajas today.

Southern Californian groove metal kings DEVILDRIVER are set to reissue revamped editions of their first five albums via BMG on CD on September 28, 2018. Limited edition LP versions will be available as part of Rocktober promotions in the U.S. with DevilDriver, The Fury Of Our Maker's Hand, and The Last Kind Words on October 2 and Pray For Villains and Beast on October 16. For more information and updates, please visit www.devildriver.com.

Formed in Santa Barbara, CA in 2002 when vocalist and frontman Dez Fafara's previous band Coal Chamber were winding down, DEVILDRIVER became Dez's new focus in the world of heavy music. The five-piece have since become a constant and dynamic force in the metal world over the best part of the last two decades. Originally signed to Roadrunner Records, in 2003 the group then featured guitarists Jeff Kendrick and Evan Pitts (who was replaced by Mike Spreitzer later that year), bassist Jon Miller and drummer John Boecklin. It's been a constant uptick for the quintet since they first blasted a hole through the zeitgeist in 2003 with their pivotal self-titled debut. Their almost psychotic dedication to the road is legendary and their mastery of the circle pit beyond dispute. Now their fans can get their hands on their catalogue in revamped, remastered form, with all but one title being pressed on vinyl for the very first time.

The five albums being reissued are DevilDriver (originally released in 2003), The Fury Of Our Makers Hand (2005), The Last Kind Words (2007), Pray For Villains (2009) and Beast (2011). The releases have been remastered by Andy Pearce (Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Anthrax, Kreator) and will be available to buy on limited edition colored vinyl and in deluxe CD format, many featuring bonus tracks and all featuring expanded liner notes and exclusive interview material with frontman, Dez Fafara. For all albums, with the exception of Beast, it'll be the first time ever they've been available in vinyl form (each will be limited to 1500 copies in the U.S.). The Fury of Our Makers Hand features six rare bonus tracks, Pray For Villains includes four bonus tracks and Beast includes three additional cuts. Full details and track listings are below.

The term ‘barrelhouse’ derives from the cheap bars or ‘juke joints’ of the rural South where African-American labourers gathered to drink and dance at the edge of small towns and levee camps. It was in these rough wooden shacks where the liquor was served directly from the barrels that the piano came into its own, as roving musicians hammered out high-spirited tunes for the drinkers and dancers and got the bar swinging. In turn, the style of up-tempo piano blues that developed in these establishments came to be known as barrelhouse.

The raucous playing style of the opening track by Speckled Red perfectly sets the scene for this rough and ready world, with his classic ‘The Dirty Dozen’ being based on a game of exchanges of insults and vulgar remarks that have long been a part of African-American folklore. In some respects a precursor of rap music, he was told to ‘clean it up for the record’.

Cow Cow Davenport was another key pioneer of the style, and whilst his seminal 1928 recording of ‘Cow Cow Blues’ owed much to a ragtime style, it was perhaps the first recorded example of the style that was to become known as ‘boogie-woogie’, with its infectious left-hand bass pattern and right-hand melodic improvisation. Within months, Clarence “Pinetop” Smith recorded ‘Pinetop's Boogie Woogie’, which was the first known use of the term ‘boogie-woogie’ on a record and cemented the term as the moniker for the genre. Consisting entirely of instructions to dancers, ‘Pinetop's Boogie Woogie’ was adapted by Ray Charles for his song ‘Mess Around’.

Other popular blues pianists to emerge from the barrelhouse circuit include Jimmy Yancey, Roosevelt Sykes and Cripple Clarence Lofton, an artist famed for his energetic stage presence. Although born with a limp, from which he derived his stage name, it could be said that it was somewhat exploitative as he started his career as a tap dancer. Lofton’s rough and ready approach is in great contrast to other featured gems including the precise ragtime-infused playing of Will Ezell on ‘Heifer Dust’ and Walter Roland’s slick accompaniment to ‘Watcha Gonna Do?’, his comical duet with blues diva Lucille Bogan. Leroy Carr was another incredibly influential blues piano pioneer whose life was cut short in 1935 by acute alcoholism, and here he closes out the album with his long-time sidekick Scrapper Blackwell on the fittingly titled ‘Barrelhouse Woman’.

psyched for this, these tapes/records are very cool and super hard to find

Dark Entries is honored to reissue the first 4 full-lengths from Carolyn Fok / CYRNAI, an Asian-American female solo artist from the Bay Area. The 6xLP box set contains all of Carolyn’s officially released music as CYRNAI between 1980-1990, as well as bonus materials. Most of these songs will see their first vinyl appearance ever in a deluxe edition limited boxed set (333 copies). Remastered by George Horn, the set features an exclusive 48-page booklet with photos, quotes, interviews and liner notes written by Carolyn and introduction by Greg Allen (author of ‘Klaus Schulze, Electronic Music Legend’). Over 70 songs, 4 hours of music, spread across six records plus an exclusive bonus 7” of cover songs by The Cure and Gang Of Four all packaged in a black matte wrap box with crimson red foil stamping.

Carolyn’s adventures in sound began with recording stories on a tape recorder at age 9 in 1976. A short time later, exploring the scattering of musical instruments and effects units her father left lying around the family home. She became especially fascinated by his TEAC reel-to-reel recorder that set off a lifelong fascination with sound design. By the age of 16 Carolyn had become inspired by industrial electronic act Cabaret Voltaire, as well as anarcho-punks Crass. Creating the stage name CYRNAI, a rearranging alphabet of Carolyn Fok, she played in several Bay Area bands including Treason, A State Of Mind, Trial and Rhythm & Noise between 1983 and 1991. Her debut release as CYRNAI, 1985’s 12” EP ‘Charred Blossoms’, followed by the cassette albums ‘Parts of The Insomnic Wheel’ in 1986, ‘Hypno-Seizure’ in 1987 and two versions of ‘To Subtle-Drive’ in 1989/1990.

Despite having been featured in publications including Electronic Musician, Keyboard and with a long term association with Industrial music, Carolyn has remained an intensely private musician, artist and writer until now. However, she has launched an ambitious project that involves releasing her vast archive of music as a ‘memoir’ via her website memoirofsound.com. Having spent extensive time in the studio amassing around 100 albums worth of electronic and experimental music, field recordings, collaborations, band projects and more, these are now being released in one place. “Her time is beyond due to be recognized, represented and attributed for her contributions to experimental analogue culture with sounds still fresher than tomorrow.” Eloise Leigh (New Age Rage, Berlin Community Radio)

6CD box set • Island albums + bonus tracks • disc of unreleased outtakes

Universal Music will, in November, issue Mental Train: The Island Years 1969-1971, a new six-disc Mott The Hoople box set which delivers everything the band recorded during their time at Island Records including many bonus tracks and unreleased material.

Mental Train includes the four albums – Mott The Hoople (1969), Mad Shadows (1970), Wildlife (1970) and Brain Capers (1971) – each of which include eight or nine bonus tracks, including A-sides, B-sides, demos, rehearsals and alternate takes.

Good news, thanks! Rock and Roll Queen rounded up some of that, an LP's-worth of singles edits, but don't think it ever did come out on legit CD---The Ballad of Mott prob did, and is a pretty good overview.

Don't think this one came out on CD either! Xgau nails it:
Shades of Ian Hunter: The Ballad of Ian Hunter and Mott the Hoople [Columbia, 1979]
Exemplary discophilia. The Mott 45s on side one are all the young stiffs--great album tracks edited down for an AM exposure that was rarely forthcoming, they race along with an almost punky punch on LP. The B sides and miscellaneous on side two are uneven, natch, but worth getting to know (as owners of Greatest Hits have already learned with two of them). Those circumspect enough to have passed up Ian's two solo albums are now rewarded with side three's best-of. And side four excerpts the solo Ian that was never released here, to impressive effect. A genuinely obsessive compilation. A-

Atlantic put Rock and Roll Queen out on CD back in the 80s. It's OOP and doesn't sound very good. When Rhino started their Atlantic Remasters series in the 90s, they did those four Mott albums (which Atlantic had in the US,and Island issued everywhere else) plus a new best of that era called Backsliding Fearlessly, which had some rarities as bonuses.

The Ballad of Mott was a two-disc set by Colombia Legacy that mainly focused on their post-Atlantic/Island work, but it did included four tracks (one per album) from that period. And yes, that Shades comp hasn't actually been reissued on CD (although there is another, less in-depth Hunter comp on CD w/that title), although pretty much everything that's on it has been either reissued on its on own or as bonus tracks on Mott/Hunter albums. It is a really good collection, and still can be had on nice vinyl for $5-10.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 3 September 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

I should also note that the Atlantic/Island Mott albums have all been OOP for awhile on CD, so this box is most welcome!

Initially released in 2014, Jane Weaver’s The Silver Globe was a conceptual delicacy – a mythical jaunt set to a motorik rhythm, played out in an overgrown forest of ideas. Described in the album’s original press release, it was “a synth-ridden post-apocalyptic prog-pop opus based on tightly embroidered, non-linear recurring themes inspired by esoteric stories, cosmic imagery and re-filtered past experiences.” After a minimal stateside release, Fire Records is now reissuing the album on November 9th on limited-edition clear vinyl with the existing artwork updated by Andy Votel and on CD in a card wallet.

Featuring tracks co-produced by David Holmes, guest appearances by Australian vintage space-rockers Cybotron, a recycled chunk of a Hawkwind track, an intricate Damon Gough guitar solo, some Suzanne Ciani waves and post production, plus remix flourishes by Andy Votel, The Silver Globe is a shiny beautifully polished gem. It’s “a full-scale leap into the cosmic void of contemporary space rock” (Quietus).

“As a child of the 1970s I can thank my friends’ brothers for their space rock record collections and concept album sleeves that I would spend hours looking at, then my first love for Kate Bush followed by a heavy dose of disco and synth pop,” says Weaver. “I guess The Silver Globe is just a subconscious inspired imprint of those things that have never left me, married with an accidental viewing of a vintage Polish sci-fi film that was so bizarre I couldn’t stop thinking about it and so it became my muse.”

Since those heady beginnings, Weaver has been celebrated for her Modern Kosmology, “an album that melds cult cornerstones into a lean and thrillingly addictive slice of unearthly pop” (Guardian). It was named a top 10 album of 2017 by the likes of MOJO, Rough Trade and Drowned in Sound, while the Guardian, Uncut, The Quietus, and Q placed it in their top 25.

Praise for The Silver Globe:

"One of those cut-glass, unfailingly true English voices, completely untouched
by even the slightest tinge of R&B, that have the ability to make a song sound like
the soundtrack to a chilly drawing room. . . Weaver’s voice is the key to [The Silver Globe]:
she can’t help but add melody, even when what lies beneath is the drone."
– The Guardian, 4/5 stars

“Atmospheric, deeply odd, funky and wistful, but never less than superb.” – Uncut, 8/10

"The Silver Globe [leaves] no doubt that she is amongst today's most striking sonic auteurs." – MOJO, 4/5 stars

“[Jane Weaver’s] main achievement here is the fact that she effortlessly distills aspects of both the early electronic/library music/hauntology craze, and her psych folk grounding, into one highly accessible album. This is no mean feat – while these genres can prove to be notoriously esoteric and abstract, there are inventive moments here which wouldn't sound out of place on mainstream alternative radio.”
– All Music, 4.5/5 stars

Jane Weaver – Loops In The Secret Society UK Tour Dates:
Oct. 17 – The Pleasance, Edinburgh
Oct. 18 – Leaf, Liverpool
Oct. 21 – Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester
Oct. 30 – City Varieties, Leeds
Nov. 6 – Hackney Arts Centre, London

BAUHAUS - THE BELA SESSION - “BELA LUGOSI'S DEAD" OFFICIAL REISSUE BY LEAVING RECORDS

Pre-order available at Stones Throw and Bauhaus' Bandcamp for Nov. 23 release. Official reissue, produced entirely by the band with Leaving Records, and distributed by Stones Throw.

The Bela Session captures the first time Bauhaus recorded together, January 26th, 1979, just six weeks after forming as a band. This is the first release of that complete recording session, including three previously unreleased tracks. This also marks the first official reissue of the single “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” on vinyl for over thirty years. The audio has been newly mastered from the original analogue tape by Mandy Parnell at Black Saloon Studios.

Bauhaus are a four-piece from Northampton, England: Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums), and David J (bass). The band emerged from the post-punk alternative music scene of the early 80s with a string of innovative albums and a powerfully dramatic live presentation.

“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” is considered the original gothic rock record and a cornerstone of the specific genre.

Originally released as a 12-inch single in August 1979 by Small Wonder Records, “Bela Lugosi's Dead” failed to make the pop charts but remained a staple of the U.K. independent singles chart for many years. “Bela” has widely influenced contemporary goth culture as well as popular culture at large. Among many highlights, a live recording of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” was the soundtrack to the opening scene of 1983 horror film The Hunger (David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve, and Susan Sarandon); it’s been covered by Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Nouvelle Vague, Chvrches and others; cited as an influence on authors Chuck Palahniuk and Neil Gaiman; used on Saturday Night Live’s skit “Goth Talk”; and the band itself was parodied on Beavis & Butthead and South Park.

Three months after releasing “Bela,” the group signed with label 4AD who released their debut album In The Flat Field. They then moved to the larger parent company, Beggars Banquet and between 1981 and 1983 released a further three studio albums, as well as peaking at #15 with their cover of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” in the UK singles chart. After disbanding in 1983, members of the band went on to form Love And Rockets and Tones On Tail while Peter Murphy enjoyed a successful solo career.

40th anniversary: Late 2018 will also mark the ruby anniversary of Bauhaus. Beggars Banquet/4AD will be reissuing records from the band’s catalog on limited edition color vinyl, details to be announced.

Leaving Records: a Los Angeles-based label founded in 2008 by Matthew “Matthewdavid” McQueen. Leaving Records has partnered with Stones Throw Records since 2013.

Vinyl details: The Bela Session will be issued on 180 gram white vinyl (ltd. 1000) and 180 gram Black vinyl; Printed inner sleeve with facsimile of the recording session's tape box; 20 x 20-inch poster of the original "Bela" 12-inch cover. Pre-order at Stones Throw or Bauhaus Bandcamp.

Track List:
“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” (9:36)
“Some Faces” (2:29) previously unreleased
“Bite My Hip ”(2:57) previously unreleased; later reworked, re-recorded as “Lagartija Nick” in 1983
“Harry” (2:56) later released as a B-side in 1982
“Boys” (3:03) previously unreleased; later re-recorded and released as the B-side of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”

Cherry Red's been on a roll, though this one is a bit too narrow for my tastes compared with their recent punk and post-punk boxes.

From Numero:

Basement Beehive is the product of a dream we had years ago. Feverish from Rhino’s excellent One Kiss Can Lead To Another box, we started making piles of girl group tracks that were mere whispers in the collector abyss. It started out as a Sweet 16 45 box shaped like a birthday cake (replete with a carton of Numero-branded candles). Then it was a series of regional surveys. Finally we boiled it down to a kick-ass mix tape of 28 crucial tracks, with an additional 28 on the compact disc version. That process took four years. The world has fallen apart in less time.

From the work we started on Basement Beehive a dozen other projects have come into focus as well, all collecting the complete output of wildly obscure girl groups, available for your streaming pleasure, and perhaps someday on a physical format. You never know. The important thing is that we found these groups and are telling their stories for the first time. We’re not hoarders of obscurity, nothing has to stay in the basement forever.

Who do we become when we live our dreams? It’s all here—the high hairdos, the dreams and schemes, the tender camp, the wedding bell fantasias and chaste tragedies. Sister acts, studio receptionists, classmates, angelic voices of the 1960s; some legendary, many hidden in the basement of expired rainbows. Gathered on this deluxe double CD are 56 (28 on the 2LP) foiled escape attempts, now free to soar in girl group heaven. also streaming mini-sets

Just got a new CD of Roscoe Mitchell's Sound in the mail - his debut, and the first AACM-affiliated album, originally released on Delmark in 1966. This new edition features the "Original Analog Mix"; I don't know what that means 'cause I don't have a previous CD edition in the house to compare it with, but I asked Chuck Nessa, who produced the album, so maybe he'll let me know. Anyway, it also includes two bonus tracks, and it's an essential free/avant jazz document, so get one if you're into that stuff.

Mønk is a live album recorded in Denmark in 1963, with Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums - one of his best bands IMO. Out today on Gearbox; the tapes were literally found in a dumpster 20 years ago.

CELEBRATING AMERICA'S GREATEST ROCK 'N' ROLL BAND, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL

THE COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS (HALF-SPEED MASTERS) 7-LP DELUXE BOX SET AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 30th

The arrival of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 50th anniversary brings an unprecedented celebration of everything the band contributed in their short but startlingly epochal time together (1968 - 1972). To commemorate this milestone, Craft Recordings is releasing a deluxe box set comprising the band's complete seven-album studio output: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmo's Factory, Pendulum and Mardi Gras.

Each album in this collection has been mastered at half-speed at Abbey Road Studios, benefiting from an exacting process that allows for an exceptional level of sonic clarity and punch, bringing these classic recordings a new vibrancy. The 180-gram LPs come housed in handsome tip-on jackets replicating the packaging of the original pressings. Along with the complete studio album collection comes an 80-page book featuring new liner notes from music journalist Roy Trakin, archival photos and reproductions of band ephemera - offering something for both new and the most diehard of Creedence fans.

Using high-res transfers from the original analog tapes, the half-speed mastering process involves playing back audio at half its recorded speed while the cutting lathe is turned at half the desired playback speed. The technique allows more time to cut a micro-precise groove, allowing more accuracy with frequency extremes and dynamic contrasts. Abbey Road Studios' award-winning engineer Miles Showell explains, "I've tried to be as authentic as I could, and just make it sound like music. Not over-hyped, not over-processed. Up until now a lot of processing has been done on these recordings, so my approach was to strip them right back and just expose them for what they are - because what they are is great music."

Although the band members were together for only four years under the Creedence Clearwater Revival appellation, they managed to accomplish more than many artists do in a lifetime. Powered by John Fogerty's visceral growl, along with Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford's gritty, in-the-pocket punch, they've sold over 30 million records in the U.S. alone, releasing 14 Top 10 hits, six Platinum albums (two of which went to number one) and one Gold album. They also managed to play over 150 tour dates around the world, including a headlining spot at Woodstock.

Over the last 50 years, Creedence Clearwater Revival's canon has become a part of the Great American Songbook. Songs like "Bad Moon Rising," "Down on the Corner," "Fortunate Son," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," "Proud Mary," "Born on the Bayou," "Travelin' Band" and "Up Around the Bend" have been ingrained into pop culture - not just as rock staples, but as classic standards.

This hardworking band offered beautifully simple and relatable music for the every-man or -woman. Blue-collar Americans saw their experiences and sociopolitical concerns reflected in Creedence's class-conscious broadsides ("Run Through the Jungle," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Fortunate Son") and portraits of working class life ("Cotton Fields," "Proud Mary").

In 1993 Creedence Clearwater Revival were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During his speech honoring the band, Bruce Springsteen noted, "I stand here tonight still envious of that music's power and its simplicity. They were hits filled with beauty and poetry and a sense of the darkness of events, of history. An American tradition shot through with pride, fear and paranoia. They rocked and played great together... they weren't the hippest band in the world, just the best."

Creedence also had a gift for transforming other musicians' songs in their own image. Impressive covers of classic tracks from all genres are dotted across their albums; from Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You," Dale Hawkins' "Susie Q" and Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly," to the Leadbelly--popularized, blues-gospel evergreen "Midnight Special" and the Marvin Gaye-popularized Motown hit "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."

With so many memorable songs that continue to grace our radio waves and television and movie screens, plus lyrics that still resonate today, Creedence Clearwater Revival is, truly, America's greatest rock 'n' roll band. This lovingly remastered and restored Complete Studio Albums (Half-Speed Masters) box set represents a package worthy of the Creedence legacy, marking 50 years since the Fogertys, Clifford and Cook brought us a body of work that has inspired and electrified generations of fans.

About Brown Acid: The Seventh Trip:

Everybody's favorite source for the hard stuff is back in business, with ten more lethal doses of rare hard rock, heavy psych and proto-metal! These obscure tracks have all been licensed, the bands have been paid, and the sources are all analog. The quality of tracks seems to increase along with the number of Trips and this cohesive collection comes outta the gate with both guns blazing!

Pegasus recorded one single in Baltimore in 1972 and they made it count. "The Sorcerer" is a throbbing ripper that prior to this was basically unknown. However, it doesn't seem too far fetched to speculate that Black Flag lifted the riff for "No Values" from this track eight years later. Unlikely, but possible, especially considering how big a Black Sabbath fan Greg Ginn is. Pegasus was lauded back in the day for "how much they delivered that Black Sabbath feel."

You may not already be familiar with Schizo, but you should know at least one of the French freaks behind this short-lived group. Richard Pinhas was the co-writer and uncredited, wah-wah abusing guitarist in Schizo after his stint in Blues Convention. Schizo recorded just two singles, the first being the heavier of the two, before Pinhas went on to record with Heldon and then going solo. The band had a unique vibe that didn't sound unlike Lemmy fronting a gang of stoned Martians.

Youngstown, Ohio is the most commonly referred to city of the entire Brown Acid series. This town of just under 150,000 people may've had the highest (literally and figuratively) per capita output of heavy 45s. Blue Amber recorded this in 1971 at Gary Rhamy's analog Mecca, Peppermint Recording Studios. This two-riff boneheaded banger sounds like a caveman protest song with an extraordinary amount of delay on the vocals. No wonder this 45 fetches three-figures on the rare occasion it comes up for sale.

Batting clean-up, we have Negative Space, the only LP sourced track on this album. This crunchy jam comes off the band's 1970 record entitled Hard, Heavy, Mean, & Evil. At over six and a half minutes, "The Calm After the Storm" is the longest track included on this volume, but it never gets dull. Fun fact: before changing the name to Negative Space, Rob Russen called his band Snow and released the "Sunflower" 45 in 1969 - you might recall that groover from the First Trip.

We generally stick with American artists for this series, but every now and again something foreign grabs us and shakes us to the core. One example is the Schizo record from France, another is this Swedish 45 by Zane. These crazy Swedes did one incredibly damaged (hence the title) record on the MM label in 1976. These proto-punkers relied heavily on synth for this tune and mixed the drums so obnoxiously loud, you might think the kit is in the room with you. This is a weird one that somehow sounds like Zolar X covering Wicked Lady. Brown Acid material all the way!

B must be short for Bangers, 'cuz this side is full of 'em! The flip of this Trip begins with a virtually unknown Oklahoma record from 1973. Blizzard was Rod McClure's high school band, but you couldn't possibly guess that teenagers recorded this heavy slab on the Token (should've been Toking) label. It's one of the best we've comped and it sounds like a hypothetical MC5/Hendrix collaboration. The "Under the Ice" level drum fills will knock your socks off if the heavy shred doesn't first.

OOOOk-lahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain and apparently where the fuzz goes seepin' in your brain! Third World is the second Okie inclusion on this Trip and we couldn't be more stOOOOOked to be sharing this very obscure single with y'all. If the heavily distorted two-note riff doesn't grab ya, the apocalyptic Grand Funk vibes will. Once they get their mitts on ya, Third World will take you back to 1971 and leave ya there. Can we hitch a ride too?

Ever heard of Virginia, Minnesota? We hadn't either until we got in touch with Calvin Haluptzok and got the back story on his band Sweet Wine. This bitchin' one-off 45 must've melted the snow off the roofs of the households brave enough to play it when it came out in 1970 and it's still red hot nearly 50 years later. This vino may be sugary, but it packs an incendiary punch! Sadly, Calvin passed before we could get his music re-released, but it was nice to have reached him before it was too late. The Sweet Wine legacy lives on thanks to the Brown Acid archivists.

C.T. Pilferhogg wins the award for most puzzling band name in our series. What's not puzzling is how righteous both sides of their self-released 1973 single are! Featured here is the A-side "You Haul" which is one of the best examples of a poor man's Deep Heep (Deep Purple meets Uriah Heep) we've ever heard and the demonic Echoplex-laden laughs mixed into this track are out of control. The band was touted as "Southwest Virginia's Finest Boogie Band", but don't let that fool ya.vThey could bang heads with the best of 'em.

The closer on the Seventh Trip is one we hold very near and dear. Not only is this record the one that's taken us the longest to secure the rights to, it's also one of the very best examples of heavy psych you'll ever hear. The track rings your bell (literally) straight out of the gate and the dank psychedelic vibes kick in immediately. Summit's "The Darkness" was recorded in a basement studio in Kansas City in 1969 when the lead guitarist was only 16. The band was from a rural Missouri town, played only one impromptu gig in Clinton, and pressed only 125 copies of this, their only single. It should come as no surprise that it sells for hundreds of dollars when it's offered. That's a small price to pay for such greatness.

About the Brown Acid series:

Some of the best thrills of the Internet music revolution is the ability to find extremely rare music with great ease. But even with such vast archives to draw from, quite a lot of great songs have gone undiscovered for nearly half a century -- particularly in genres that lacked hifalutin arty pretense. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins -- often hoarding them in private collections, or selling at ridiculous collector's prices. Legendary compilations like Nuggets, Pebbles, ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on
Brown Acid.

Lance Barresi, co-owner of L.A./Chicago retailer Permanent Records has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the 60s and 70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that's hard to believe have remained unheard for so long.

"I essentially go through hell and high water just to find these records," Barresi says. "Once I find a record worthy of tracking, I begin the (sometimes) extremely arduous process of contacting the band members and encouraging them to take part. Daniel and I agree that licensing all the tracks we're using for
Brown Acid is best for everyone involved," rather than simply bootlegging the tracks. When all of the bands and labels haven't existed for 30-40 years or more, tracking down the creators gives all of these tunes a real second chance at success.

"There's a long list of songs that we'd love to include," Barresi says. "But we just can't track the bands down. I like the idea that Brown Acid is getting so much attention, so people might reach out to us."

Brown Acid: The Seventh Trip will be available everywhere on LP, CD and download on October 31st, 2018 via RidingEasy Records. Pre-orders are available for digital (with immediate download of the first single) at Bandcamp, physical pre-orders at RidingEasy Records.

A fucking great record. Gut-wrenching and powerful. Corin (Sleater-Kinney) and Tracy (the Lies) caught many people's ears off guard with their loud & passionate early 90's debut. Now it's your turn.

Another recent add on Kill Rock Stars' bandcamp---handy for a rainy day:

https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2878226521_10.jpg

2017 repress of The Raincoats' self-titled debut album.

“Within a minute, they seem to have trashed every female stereotype in rock and roll… I was amazed” – Greil Marcus, ‘Rolling Stone’ 1980.

The Raincoats, seminal post-punk band, ‘godmothers of grunge’ and inspiration to a generation of riot grrrls, are celebrating over three decades of breaking rules and doing things the way they think they should be done with a film that maps the band from its formation in the late 1970s when Gina Birch met Ana da Silva, and their journey to becoming one of the most important underground bands Britain has ever produced. Made up of rare archive footage, much of it unseen, and a series of new interviews with people who knew the band in the late seventies as well as artists and musicians who have been affected or inspired by their work, The Raincoats, Fairytales – A Work in Progress documents how Ana and Gina, along with their manager Shirley O’Loughlin and the various musicians who flowed in and out of the band’s many formations, created a sound that, while inspired by punk and rock music that had come before, was uniquely and uncompromisingly powerful and female, and which has held a fascination over all those lucky enough to have stumbled across it. The famous story is of course that of Kurt Cobain travelling to the Rough Trade shop in Talbot Road in 1992 in an attempt to replace his worn out copy of The Raincoats LP, a trip that in the end led to reissues of the band’s back catalogue and the offer of a tour with Nirvana that sadly never took place. The Raincoats have always impressed; in 1980 John Lydon announced in Trouser Press, “Rock’n’Roll is shit…music has reached an all-time low – except for The Raincoats.”

The band’s first gig was in November 1977 and by 1978, with a line-up including Palmolive of The Slits and Vicky Aspinall, they were an all-female band. Rough Trade Records released the band’s first single, "Fairytale in the Supermarket"/ "In Love"/ "Adventures Close to Home" in May 1979 and the women went on their first tour. The Raincoats, Odyshape, The Kitchen Tapes and Moving had all been released by 1984 and Ana and Gina turned to solo projects. It wasn’t until 1994 that The Raincoats performed together again on stage, to celebrate the reissues of their albums and since then they have only made rare live appearances, most noteably at Robert Wyatt’s 2001 Meltdown where they performed as the four-piece we will see them as tonight – Ana and Gina are joined by Anne Wood on violin and Jean-Marc Butty on drums.

The Raincoats inspire in their fans a kind of generous enthusiasm and genuine respect that is rare and difficult to explain. Delia of the band Mambo Taxi put it best in the sleeve-notes to the 1993 reissue of Moving, “How do you explain love at first sight? How can I put into words how much I like The Raincoats without falling into a sea of superlatives? … I love them and I don’t care if it’s sycophantic because it’s true.”

Martin Dupont - The Complete Collection 1980-1988

Minimal Wave is proud to present The Complete Collection 1980-1988, a five LP box set by the highly lauded French group Martin Dupont. The band formed in Marseille in 1980 and consisted of Alain Seghir, Brigitte Balian, Beverley Jane Crew, and Catherine Loy. They were immensely talented with a rare dynamic between them that was likely inspired by a combination of their magnetic personalities, creative vision and and the home studio where they recorded. The music they made was colorful, enthusiastic and delicate, but also melancholy and mysterious. A mixture of hot and cold, light and dark. They made electronic music that incorporated guitars and clarinets and are described by many as a New Wave band yet they truly transcended genres. They had some mainstream success finding themselves opening for bands like The Lotus Eaters, The Lounge Lizards and Siouxsie and the Banshees, without any intention of ever being a commercial enterprise. In Beverley Jane Crew’s words, “the songs just tumbled out in a completely organic and spontaneous way and as soon as they were recorded on the four track, they were shared with friends on tapes, openly and excitedly.”

They released three studio albums: Just Because, Sleep Is A Luxury and Hot Paradox, one cassette entitled Inédits 1981-1983 and one 7” single entitled Your Passion. In 2008, Minimal Wave released a compilation of selected tracks entitled Lost And Late. Now one decade later, we are excitedly releasing our first box set for this phenomenal band.

The Complete Collection 1980-1988 consists of all of Martin Dupont’s recorded material to date in the form of five 180 gram vinyl LPs and spans 60 songs recorded between 1980 and 1988. Along with the five LPs, the box contains a 12 page LP-sized full color booklet featuring previously unpublished photographs of the band, their history, and select song lyrics. The box itself is bound in platinum grey linen, with black foil type and both booklet and box are designed by NYC based artist Peter Miles. All five LPs are pressed on black 180 gram vinyl and feature the original artwork of the French artist Yves Cheynet. The box set is limited to 500 copies, limit one per customer please. Pre-order information will be available very soon. In the meantime, please email your full name along with subject line “Martin Dupont Box Set” to info at minimal wave dot com if you are interested in securing one.

Birch says she also plans to interview Sonic Youth members Kim Gordon, Steve Shelley and Thurston Moore for the documentary during her visit to America.

“The film will weave together films made from the ’70s onward,” she says, “both of our live footage and segments from Super 8 films that were made at art school as well as new creative sections — with work about gender, feminism, clothes and creativity.”

A couple I've been digging in recent Tweets (longer takes on Rolling Country and Charlie's own thread)
Both done right by Ace:
Charlie Rich, Too Many Teardrops - The Complete Groove & RCA Recordings: Choirs, strings oops upside your head, get bearable and even occasionally useful, incl. killing weakest songs. Always we get Big Ol Charlie on lil cat feet---that voice, them keys! 40 tracks---I like a lot, love several.

George Jones/Jones Boys: Live in TX '65: Brave ballads of self-torture x "C Jam Blues," "White Lightnin'," "Bony Maronie," "B Bowman Bop." Panhandle Rag," "Jole Blon," JB trusty/Bladerunner crooner also cool w girl part on "We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds," heavy guests too Guests are steel guitarist Buddy Emmons and fiddlers Red Hayes and (on "Jole Blond") Rufus Thibodeaux ("Two-By-Four," George calls him). The JBs crooner is Don Adams---android-sounding, strangely satisfying.

And! Another one on Ace:
Cover Me--The Eddie Hinton Songbook

A cult hero among those who know and love their Muscle Shoals music, Eddie was a fixture of the Shoals recording scene in the mid-late 60s. As well as being a prolific and immediately recognisable session guitarist, and a great singer who sadly recorded far too infrequently, Eddie regularly wrote fine songs with a peer group that at various times included Donnie Fritts and Dan Penn. 'Cover Me' features a comprehensive selection of Eddie's best-known copyrights, many of which are now regarded as classics of 60s southern soul. Not all of Eddie's songs are as well-known as his biggest hit, the much-recorded 'Breakfast In Bed', but there are several others here that could and should have been just as commercially successful.
