While video game collecting is a popular hobby, video game art collecting is a more rarefied avocation. That’s probably because there are so few pieces to go around. There are thousands of copies of Battletoads In Battlemaniacs for the Super Nintendo, but only one original painting of its box artwork—and that’s owned by Dan, a 42-year-old accountant from Vancouver, British Columbia who’s been hunting down original game art for the last decade.

Recently, he posted a massive bounty for one of his holy grails—he’ll pay $100,000 for the original box art used on the NES game Contra. Yep, that’s five zeroes.

In an age before high-res digital art and Photoshop, the covers of game boxes were painted by hand and photographed for the box cover. The paintings had to be done larger than the final product, so the original art is usually around 18 by 24 inches, with larger examples going up to about 20 by 30 inches in size.

Dan, who asked Kotaku not to use his last name over privacy concerns, began as a garden-variety game collector, at one point amassing a near-complete set of games for the Nintendo Entertainment System that were still sealed in the original shrinkwrap. That all changed, he said, when he bought his first pieces of art.

Dan works with financial numbers for a living but doesn't know anything about how money works. Dan is an accountant in Vancouver who is concerned about his privacy but doesn't know how privacy works.

Nintendo games seem to be a particularly popular option for counterfeit product makers; the chances of finding a whole host of knock-off goods from any car boot sale or eBay search is scarily high. While we don't always see how companies such as the 'Big N' deal with such matters, these recently rediscovered photos show what is possibly the best method we could ever imagine.

Enter the steamroller. Found by the archivists at Gamegeschiedenis, these images of counterfeit Nintendo products being crushed were reportedly taken in the Netherlands back in 1994. The photos featuring some lucky employee whose job was to go around stomping on the fake games in a Mario outfit stood out as a particular highlight to us, although that actually does seem like a good way to put across a strong message to potential fraudsters.

oh god that article. i lived through the era - i remember tweaking for EMS, XMS, etc - and it's killing me reading it

God yeah, boot discs! DOS=HIGH,UMB is real Proustian madeleine stuff. And sometimes resigning yourself to playing something without sound or mouse, because the game needed the memory those drivers would otherwise be taking up. Where did I learn to do this stuff? Feel like it can only have been through readme.txt files, we definitely weren't googling it (and ahem I rarely had manuals for the games I was playing in those days either).

i have perpetually toyed with "load quote star quote" and "comma eight comma one" as either artist or album names for myself, should i ever finish any more music and need names for it. such powerful, imprinting incantations. what did they mean? why couldn't you just load? who knows! i always typed them. sometimes the disk had written instructions on it to type something else and i did that too. my great proustian cue though is the sound of the c64 disk drive in action.

i think a lot of the boot disk know-how was circulated via BBS and/or by friends of friends, sort of like how pirate copies seemed to get around even though we didn't know THAT many other people with computers. some of it may have even been in game manuals or otherwise provided by the publishers. hilariously, i think the toughest time i ever had getting a game to work was in the late 90s when i picked up a vintage copy of Serpent Isle --- back when it came out, origin had had its games' exectuables load their own proprietary memory manager to strongarm the system into giving the game the resources it wanted. utterly incompatible with windows 95. we got there eventually but the real solution was to rebuild a state-of-the-art 1992 machine, which i then mostly devoted to wing commander replays.

Oh, Jesus, that's a nice idea. Kind of a wretched collection of games but one assumes it'll be hackable to the full library. Maybe someone can make a plug-in with recordings of disk drive noise and then we'd really be talking...
