6 Great Albums Named After Other Great Albums

And Yo La Tengo aren’t the only veteran indie rockers pulling a “call me by your name” at the moment.

the justin timberlake review is another savage throwback. easy target but still

It’s remarkable how few ideas are contained within this hour-plus Blue Ridge Mountains mood board of an album. Man of the Woods is a misstep large enough to merit relitigating Justin Timberlake’s status as a pop superstar. How much of his career should we chalk up to fortune, privilege, and an essential malleability? Is working with Pharrell Williams and Timbaland—pantheon-level producers who collaborated extensively with Timberlake at or near the peak of their powers, and continue to do so—an act of creative genius, or just kismet? There may be no definite answers. But Man of the Woods’ failure invites the questions.

6 IPAs to enjoy while not listening to the new Justin Timberlake album: Listen

President Keyes, Friday, 2 February 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link

The tone of vindictive glee in that review is wayyyyy over the top. Like, the writer just desperately wanted the album to be bad because it proved the theory of Justin Timberlake they've been sitting on for the last 15 years and now the cultural and political climate is finally right for them to slam-dunk on him without losing any of their cool cred.

triggercut, Friday, 2 February 2018 23:22 (six years ago) link

yeah and they built up to this review a day or two ago with an article dragging him for working with Toby Keith. like we are supposed to shit a brick because the guy about to play his second super bowl once worked with Toby Keith.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 2 February 2018 23:33 (six years ago) link

it's funny cos there is a link right there to when they gave him a BNM. i suppose when you suit the narrative, things are good

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 2 February 2018 23:33 (six years ago) link

I've had the same theory for the last 15 years

Truly, “Celebrity Skin” was the “Look What You Made Me Do” of its day.

billstevejim, Monday, 12 February 2018 06:55 (six years ago) link

But yeah, I'm not too surprised at ITAOTS not getting #1 on a Pitchfork list in 2018. It definitely would have hit #1 if they made this list 10 years ago, but they seem to value Influence On What Is Popular Now and Genre Diversity over everything else at the moment. No one making widely loved music today is shouting out Elephant 6. I mean, there's a touch of NMH about that Richard Dawson album from last year but it seems to owe more to fantasy tales and old folk songs than anything NMH did.

triggercut, Monday, 12 February 2018 07:04 (six years ago) link

i'm pleasantly surprised not only that Elliott Smith's XO placed so high, but also that it placed above In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

flappy bird, Monday, 12 February 2018 07:47 (six years ago) link

there's a lot of good albums on that list, if I were a teenager in 2018 I imagine it would be a great resource

niels, Monday, 12 February 2018 08:03 (six years ago) link

whenever I see the opening posts I wonder if most of the criticism itt is nonsensical

niels, Monday, 12 February 2018 08:06 (six years ago) link

xp agreed

flappy bird, Monday, 12 February 2018 08:13 (six years ago) link

the palm album has a lot of elephant six elements. it also just got a meh mid six review so....

maura, Monday, 12 February 2018 11:04 (six years ago) link

(also it more resembles the fringier e6 bands like secret square, spindly textures and off kilter melodies. i think it’s very good)

maura, Monday, 12 February 2018 11:05 (six years ago) link

This is actually a pretty P4k Classic list with a lot of IDM and indie rock that looks p indistinguishable from the ca. 2002 lists when they started getting serious about Top 50s. I would imagine about 35-40 of these would have made the cut if they had crossed the 12 Rods/Billy Breathes point earlier. Certainly not my Top 50 but def feels like that ol’ 4k. Can’t knock the hustle

imago, Monday, 12 February 2018 14:30 (six years ago) link

Black Star and the back end of Hello Nasty have aged very poorly tho

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 12 February 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

still dig "I Don't Know" because it reminds me of cute dumb guys sharing drunken wisdom whom I momentarily crushed on in college.

yeah i think the inclusion of a couple emo albums is maybe the only "correction" they've made.

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 February 2018 14:56 (six years ago) link

genuinely thought Celebrity Skin would hit top ten

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 February 2018 14:58 (six years ago) link

i actually bought 11 of these when they came out which is a pretty high percentage for me and a pitchfork list. (outkast, massive attack, air, boredoms, madonna, gang starr, mercury rev, hole, mark hollis, sunny day real estate, rza.)

i would still play boredoms, mark hollis, and sunny day in 2018. don't need to hear the rest. though mezzanine will always be super cool. i didn't know a single person on earth who was excited about the release of the mark hollis record other than me at the time.

scott seward, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:05 (six years ago) link

expected tori amos to not be on it; did not expect fiona apple to not be on it

...probably because that came out in 1999 lol shit

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Monday, 12 February 2018 15:07 (six years ago) link

why did I think that was a '98 album

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Monday, 12 February 2018 15:07 (six years ago) link

juvenile and dmx far too low

From the Choirgirl Hotel is my favorite Amos but I've only seen fervent fandom on this board and FB.

I think I asked for (and got) CDs of the RZA, the Beck and Chef Aid for Christmas of 1998

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:16 (six years ago) link

i never listened to that rza album after i bought it. i mean i played it once or twice. i had high hopes at the time.

scott seward, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:24 (six years ago) link

on the other hand, i listened to that Juvenile album last week.

scott seward, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:25 (six years ago) link

Black Star...has aged very poorly tho

I mean, it doesn't sound very much in lockstep with where hip-hop is right now, but it's still a good late night record

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Monday, 12 February 2018 15:26 (six years ago) link

Moment of Truth doesn't sound lockstep either but I'd definitely choose it over Black Star

President Keyes, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

good list overall. 400 degreez is way too low, obviously. Come on, it's definitely better than the sixth or seventh best Sonic Youth album. But I'm glad they made room for Maxwell, Big Pun, Devin The Dude, and Mark Hollis.

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Monday, 12 February 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

xp, they both made the top 20 and they're three slots apart, that's just splitting hairs.

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Monday, 12 February 2018 15:30 (six years ago) link

That’s why I mentioned it. Both of those albums were a bit throwback even at the time, but I think MOT sounds a lot better

President Keyes, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:36 (six years ago) link

i bought so many cds in 1998 because of cdnow and music boulevard's three for a dollar per email address deal. the beauty of having your own domain name

maura, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:39 (six years ago) link

I don't remember the 3-4-$1 deal, but Music Blvd also had a $10 coupon with no minimum purchase so I got a ton of free $8-$9 things.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:43 (six years ago) link

Gee, I wonder why they couldn't stay in business.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

i think black star still sounds great

It's not delivery, it's Adorno! (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 12 February 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

Yeah this is a solid list, would quibble with the order but can't think of too many personal favourites they've missed - DJ Quik, Tori Amos (like katherine says this isn't surprising) and on the emo side, Jets to Brazil.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 12 February 2018 15:46 (six years ago) link
