Saw the lineup at the end.

Mel was "And the winner is ..."

I hadn't heard any of the songs. Still managed to predict the winner.

Storm by SuRie won it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLGEx2x8xoo

I have no desire at all to hear this song again

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 8 February 2018 10:31 (six years ago) link

The sad-sack jury will probably give it some points to make it end up at 16th total.

abcfsk, Thursday, 8 February 2018 13:20 (six years ago) link

^^^ probably another just-below-mid-table result. I preferred Raya's song but SuRie's live performance was better. The other four I can't even remember.

Benjamin Ingrosso’s bio is a winner for sure:

Be it behind the keys, behind the scenes or on every TV screen nationwide, Sweden’s Benjamin Ingrosso has turned many a head with his contemporary twist of polished pop tones and soulful performance bravado. Turning his early proficiency in song writing towards a focus on original music back in 2015, the past two years have seen the 20-year-old artist garner national admiration, critical acclaim and millions of streams alike.

Now, that spark is epitomized by the vocal detail, melodic finesse and high octane performance values associated with Benjamin Ingrosso. Having signed to TEN Music Group in 2015, the home of such national treasures as Zara Larsson, Icona Pop and Erik Hassle, his initial footsteps as a solo artist have continued to turn heads for all the right reasons. From the gold certified fall in love, Benjamin’s first multi-million streaming solo offering, to romantic summer pop romp ‘Love You Again,’ there’s a sense of the timeless meeting the contemporary when the young crooner strikes up a tune.

As his commitment to making timeless continues to fuel sleepless nights in the studio, the arsenal of new music ahead is testament to the fact that Benjamin’s unwillingness to rest on the laurels of the last single or his family namesake. Set to consistently channel a customised stamp that falls far for the stereotypical world of Swedish pop music, 2017 promises to be a year of liberating steps for the soul, spirit and swagger Benjamin Ingrosso is throwing into the ring.

All Aboard!

Just realised I haven't heard half of these and it's already time!

Israel is fun and deserves a Loboda-level stage show...3/1 is ridiculous odds though.

France's tonally strange ode to the Mediterranean refugee crisis still sounds like the winner to me.

wait why is this on ILE?

Someone at the EBU likes to troll - Russia and Ukraine are both in the same semi (Thursday’s).

Strongly recommend the Popbitch guide which is always fairly great:

It’s here. The annual Popbitch Eurovision Guide – filled with 60 pages of my dazzling(/dipshit) insight – is out now, in time for the first semi-final tonight... https://t.co/VmQDgf8ByH pic.twitter.com/BnMFPnBIMi

— Kit Lovelace (@kitlovelace) May 8, 2018

Cyprus is favourite atm but I don’t realky understand why. Rubak’s song is like the shameful pleasure and cultural worth of picking your own scabs. He’ll probably win.

Tonight’s semi final has some of the better/higher rated entrants and Ireland, who are muck as usual.

gyac, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

but it's *our* muck

i'm rooting for australia and estonia this year

nxd, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 15:49 (five years ago) link

i imagine netherlands will be the most disliked here ha

nxd, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 15:51 (five years ago) link

jfc at my many typos, it was not worth editing that sentence for that.

Netherlands is the racist one right? Nb I don’t acrualky know anything about it besides what’s mentioned in the guide.

gyac, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

oh is it?
i listened to it once a couple months ago and just hated it

Azerbaijan = cool hostile architecture on the set, meh song.
Iceland = nononononononononononononononononononononono

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

Iceland is probably going to be that one inexplicable one that goes through.

gyac, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

I can't remember icelands which one was it

nxd, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:20 (five years ago) link

Male crooning.

Belgium my favourite so far but not 100% sold on it, would listen again though.

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:22 (five years ago) link

Wow @ Israel, that was fucking great.

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

Our household is divided over that one. Her vocals were a bit wobbly but you’d still fancy it.

gyac, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

Estonia is like Emma Shaplin with all the fun goth bits removed - though probably the least offensive thing so far.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:45 (five years ago) link

Croatian lady seems just a teeny bit too method for my liking.

trishyb, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:57 (five years ago) link

Greece and Finland = thumbs up from me.

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 20:13 (five years ago) link

yeh i like finlands

nxd, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

Finland ++++

This feels like a pretty even SF, only a couple of obvious non-qualifiers. Nervous for Israel.

Inexplicably taken by Iceland's 1997 revivalism.

Portugal sounds pleasant this year.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Tuesday, 8 May 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

Ireland wtf

Pour one out for Greece.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Tuesday, 8 May 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link

yeah Greece was robbed

Belgium was my fave not to go through, Greece was solid. Ireland coasted on the staging.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 21:19 (five years ago) link

Greece definitely the one I'm most bummed about. Cyprus was good, though!

emil.y, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 21:20 (five years ago) link

Phillip Kirkorov is going through even if Russia aren’t.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Thursday, 10 May 2018 19:36 (five years ago) link

^ correct

Russia was awful, Moldova was fun enough.

France is pretty good.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Thursday, 10 May 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

Georgia was nice :( Norway and Netherlands the worst qualifiers of the whole lot.

Amazon Web Services emo franchise is growing on me.

I liked Slovenia (banger) and Serbia (gothy ethno-dance). This round was generally poor, though. Pleased Hungary got through, just to add a bit of a difference. Netherlands = wtf @ that garbage.

emil.y, Thursday, 10 May 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

Would have preferred Malta over Serbia but otherwise main faves today made it through, Slovenia, Australia.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 May 2018 04:57 (five years ago) link

Oh and Ukraine for the 'what if Phantom of the Opera, but Marilyn Manson?'

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 May 2018 04:58 (five years ago) link

Apparently like three ppl on twitter got upset over the Attenborough parody that was broadcast as part of Eurovision, the Daily Express picked up the story and now it's all outrage and "it's POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD" over on the Portuguese social media landscape.

A key change. Heavy metal doesn't do key changes.

Kanye O'er Frae France? (Tom D.), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link

Eurovision doesn’t really do them either these days. I quite like them.

I hate the Israeli song with a passion but it’s nice to see the innovative use of Novation Launchpads.

This performance is a bit less grating than the semi final one.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link

this is a pretty infectious performance from israel here

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link

somewhat taken aback by the netherlands, i must admit

Mahogany Loggins (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

I want to hate it on principle but it’s really quite well done for what it is.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

This Netherlands song is awful anyway, but following Israel it sounds like the worst thing I've ever heard

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

Re Israel song I felt that Norton had hyped it up too much, was just okay in the end.

In space, pizza sends out for YOU (Ste), Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

Eurovision doesn’t really do them either these days. I quite like them.

Eurovision without key changes, it's a different world. Good riddance to 'em, I says.
