Bummed I didn't nominate some stuff - loved - Resurgency - No Worlds... Nor Gods Beyond , Bufihimat - I , Droid - Terrestrial Mutations, Slow - V - Oceans , Sutrah - Dunes , Madrost - The Essence of Time Matches No Flesh , Toxic Shock - TWENTYLASTCENTURY - but, alas, they weren't listed.

If you'd brought it up sooner I could have added them!

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 16:47 (six years ago) link

We're gonna go back to doing this before the main poll next year right? Good good

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:48 (six years ago) link

I guess metal is never truly an anticlimax though

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:48 (six years ago) link

well people requested longer voting times and wanted the year to end so all albums that came out in december got in. And seandalai can only do it before xmas or after big poll.

as it turned out with my mum being in hospital for 2 weeks in december there wouldve been no way i couldve run it and simon wouldve been left on his own

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 16:51 (six years ago) link

all fair, all fair. hoping Mother Odysseus is faring better ofc!

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:54 (six years ago) link

No big deal! Good year for metal - there were a lot of records I really liked a re-visited many times that all made my top 50. I'll rep those missing ones though - esp. the Resurgency.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:57 (six years ago) link

Perhaps we might naughtily speculate about which metal albums will appear in the 77 next week

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 17:00 (six years ago) link

I dont expect any except maybe Chelsea Wolfe. Anything else would be a surprise. Qotsa might not make it because of Josh kicking that photographer, I dont think ILM is prepared to put music on its own after some horrible behaviour like that. I did vote for it but I did want to put in brackets Josh was a knob after it.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:10 (six years ago) link

Electric Wizard wasn't even nominated for the big poll.

I suppose Jute Gyte might get in since less votes might be needed and his usual 5 voters amongst us might sneak him in

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:11 (six years ago) link

One year the metal poll winner didn't even get in the top 100 in the big poll. Was it Hammers Of Misfortune?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:12 (six years ago) link

Don't think Jute Gyte will make it this time. There hasn't been so much clamour.

I think Ex Eye has a chance

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 17:18 (six years ago) link

I have no idea what will even win *this* poll. Seandalai hasn't sent me access to the ballots or anything yet as he's so busy with big poll

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:22 (six years ago) link

This was my Top Ten at The Agit Reader, one of two websites I write for these days. Consider that my campaigning!

Has there been any debut albums by bands that have made an impact this year?
Most of the big impact albums I can think of this year are by established acts or related to big bands (Pillorian, avatarium,Au champ des morts)

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

The Tchornobog debut has gotten a lot of love critically.

Anyone who likes the 90s Norwegian school of avant-garde/post-black metal should hear Urarv's debut. Aldrahn on vox and guitar!

And I also endorse the Entheos album, I included it in my ballot

YES

Dinsdale, Friday, 26 January 2018 20:15 (six years ago) link

we may as well discuss the big (on ilm) albums then, what did you guys think of the albums by
Mastodon
Electric Wizard
Converge
Cleric
Elder
Bell Witch
Pallbearer
Godflesh
Wolves in the Throne Room

and jute gyte?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 20:43 (six years ago) link

enh, enh, pretty good, not my thing, awesome, pretty good (tho excessive), not bad, v good, enh, and pretty good, in that order.

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 20:44 (six years ago) link

I couldn't even tell you what the big metal albums out in the real world are tbh. Was there any platinum metal albums?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link

I've only heard 3 of those

Elder = A+
Godflesh, WITTR = meh

Dinsdale, Friday, 26 January 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link

Mastodon Not heard, but I haven't liked anything else that they've done after Crack the Skye so I assume it's pretty lame
Electric Wizard Not for me thanks
Converge NO
Cleric YES
Elder I didn't like their last one but this is really great!
Bell Witch Decent, not a keeper for me though
Pallbearer Haven't heard, didn't like their previous much, should give it a go maybe since I liked Elder
Godflesh Always been lukewarm on this band
Wolves in the Throne Room Overall solid and very impressive in parts
Jute Gyte Sometimes think this could be his best? Very good, anyway

did Terrorizer publish their EOY list yet? Fuckers sent me about 3 or 4 issues instead of the supposed 13 you got for subscribing.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link

Just missed my main ballot but I think Elder might be one of the best rock bands out there rn. I'm holding out meager hope that their album and/or Botanist and/or Ex Eye might scrape the lower reaches of the countdown. Obv Jute Gyte as well...

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 26 January 2018 21:35 (six years ago) link

This might be my favourite metal song of the year
Electric Wizard - Necromania

https://youtu.be/HqO_gPaxLYU

remember the year we tried a tracks poll and hardly anyone voted? I thought it was a shame it didn't work out.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 27 January 2018 00:11 (six years ago) link

I was just wondering the other day why there were no tracks poll... Then again I'm not a tracks person myself and my ballot would likely have 3 items top. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be interested if others started to list their favorite tracks in this thread or elsewhere.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 27 January 2018 07:24 (six years ago) link

the problem was nobody was interested in a tracks poll

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 27 January 2018 13:14 (six years ago) link

Metal is an album-oriented form for most adherents. It certainly is for me.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Saturday, 27 January 2018 15:12 (six years ago) link

Voted. So Power Trip (#65) was the top metal/rock album on Pazz & Jop, followed by Elder (83) and QOTSA (86). No other results available.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 27 January 2018 15:40 (six years ago) link

Who else plans to vote? less than a week to vote! You have until saturday!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 28 January 2018 19:46 (six years ago) link

Will vote!

Siegbran, Sunday, 28 January 2018 21:56 (six years ago) link

we only have 13 ballots so far, Hope there's a lot more to come!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 28 January 2018 22:17 (six years ago) link

I will likely be voting minutes from the deadline - still a few things to check out first...

If anyone's still looking to fill their ballot, or even radically change it at the last second, then I'd be thrilled to see any of these placing (sorry if they're obvious, I haven't kept up with the ILX zeitgeist much this last year):

Kairon; IRSE - Ruination: This is a very beautiful sprawling psych album in the same kind of wheelhouse as Elder, but considerably more shoegaze (at times).
https://kaironirse.bandcamp.com/album/ruination

Psudoku - Psudokument: I'm sure imago's mentioned this plenty already, but if you've not listened yet and your tolerance for glittering electro-grindcore is high, then it's well worth hearing.
https://psudoku.bandcamp.com/

Black Cilice - Banished from Time: The grimiest, strangest kind of atmospheric. Genuinely frightening.

Oops sorry, didn't mean to post that as a video...

Launch of new ILM school business management programmes! (tangenttangent), Sunday, 28 January 2018 22:27 (six years ago) link

Yeah to Black Cilice! That album made my main ballot, all the driney mystique of the previous album but mych more chilling priduction and those vocals!

New Forgotten Spell us v much along those lines as well

Another way super lo-fi black metal album I've bern getting into--though its nowhere near as visceral, a lit more synths--is Rubedo Nocturno. I think you can only find it on soundcloud tho

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 29 January 2018 04:22 (six years ago) link

Oh, looks like its only a sample :(

Voted. As far as campaigning -- everyone should listen to the Spectral Voice album, which is a perfectly idiomatic example of spooky, doomy death. Atmospheric in places, crushing in others. The whole vibe is spot on.

Dominique, Monday, 29 January 2018 14:36 (six years ago) link

That's sounding good.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 29 January 2018 15:12 (six years ago) link

Closing track of the Forgotten Spell (see Youtube for more) is one of the best metal songs of the year, yeah.

The Psudoku is not really for anyone except tt, ultros and I. Maybe Dominique. Hyperactive Cardiacsy grindcore, y'all. You've been warned.

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:14 (six years ago) link

never heard of Psodouku until now, but it's fun after 2 tracks! Kind of Melt Banana-ish? Also, I sincerely hope the name is a combination of Psyopus and Sudoku.

Dominique, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

Count me in on Psudoku, though I heard it too late to vote for it. Not normally my thing.

xp

beard papa, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:49 (six years ago) link

you can always resubmit your ballot ;)

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

track 5 (the REALLY unpronounceable one) is my pick

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

Will listen to Spectral Voice a bit later too, cheers

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

Spectral Voice is great

ArchCarrier, Monday, 29 January 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

ok, time to go through all the things mentioned in this thread before voting
