Oh no, I didn't know about any of that, and hadn't seen the article when it first appeared either. Tokyo is a great track, play a lot still.

RIP Alex

where do we post funk and disco edit bobbins on ILM?

davey, Tuesday, 13 February 2018 21:08 (six years ago) link

or the balearic thread

or this thread, who cares

the late great, Tuesday, 13 February 2018 21:20 (six years ago) link

sure why not :)

i'm digging the orange tree edits series, esp. the last couple releases

davey, Tuesday, 13 February 2018 23:17 (six years ago) link

Pls put disco here too!

DJI, Tuesday, 13 February 2018 23:22 (six years ago) link

Cool, DJI, will do.

re: the Moodymann remix of No Ufos mentioned upthread, I think the new vocals are a bummer. They sounded fine in the sample but I was let down when I got the thing in the mail. This is okay with me b/c I didn't have the original, though, and that Luciano version is surprisingly tasty.

davey, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:24 (six years ago) link

i'm more into the vocals now than i was before!

the late great, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:45 (six years ago) link

yes they are groaningly corny ... but so are most detroit techno vocals? and so are the o.g. version vocals. so they have been growing on me.

the late great, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:46 (six years ago) link

It fell down a hole, lets try that again for all spiritual mashheads in suits

davey, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 08:49 (six years ago) link

Yay, NO UFOS! Remix is super.

Vocals are just of the era, love it!

MikoMcha, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:32 (six years ago) link

I might play it out tomorrow and see how the crowd reacts.

davey, Thursday, 15 February 2018 21:13 (six years ago) link

sure, report back,

MikoMcha, Saturday, 17 February 2018 00:34 (six years ago) link

ahh sorry i didn't play it last night after all. as i was forgetting there was a love theme for the night so i didn't think it'd slot in with my set. :/ i got the best reactions to older bobbins though, so maybe it would've gone over well anyway. shoot.

davey, Sunday, 18 February 2018 04:55 (six years ago) link

Check bobbins of the past thread for some great vocals from Basile Boli and Chrissy Waddle!

saer, Sunday, 18 February 2018 06:03 (six years ago) link

thanks, will do! i've been sleeping on that thread for too long

davey, Sunday, 18 February 2018 08:54 (six years ago) link

I don't really know where this drifted in from, but I do know Basile Boli was unavailable for vocals this time around

saer, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:07 (six years ago) link

Yeah, so the 15 years of the Bunker comp is pretty consistently great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osqgCOUbicQ

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 14:59 (six years ago) link

Bunker comp feels very much like a 90's techno thing to me, like microhouse or minimal never happened. Even the cover as a Tresor-style homage...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 11:03 (six years ago) link

Hi bobbinsers - been lurking on this thread for the last few months, having made my first proper effort to get into techno at the end of last year (more from a DnB/UKG/dubstep background dance music wise).

Was checking out the bunker comp on iTunes and pressed the purchase button by mistake! Not regretting it though; although I generally find melodic and minimal stuff to be more accessible at this point there are some great tunes here. I guess my ideal would be a midpoint between this very deep and detailed textural stuff and the broader melodic flourishes of Kompakt.

are you aware of this thing called berghain?

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:09 (six years ago) link

Sure, but are you talking about the club or Ostgut Ton? Berghain runs a range of programmed events, increasingly so I'd say.

But sure, there is a 90s "classicism" strain, obv. If that's what you're saying...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link

they have a lot of special events but the main room / panoramabar bookings are still pretty much of a certain vein

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:17 (six years ago) link

there's not an official resident list I know of, but I just remembered this page where someone crunched the data: http://cdm.link/2017/05/berghain-numbers-data-worlds-relentless-techno-club/

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link

xp yeah i was just saying - in my admittedly snarky way - that the 90s techno revival has been in full swing for at least 5-6 years now

oddly enough it doesn't have seem to have changed the fortunes of tresor the label or club much ... though maybe the principals are just old enough now they don't care to put in the effort ...

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:35 (six years ago) link

I think Tresor just keeps on grinding

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:37 (six years ago) link

yeah just at a much reduced rate!

i am very interested in picking up the SCOPEX collection they just put out ... some discussion on the electro thread awhile back

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:38 (six years ago) link

I kind of slept on it and I think the vinyl might be sold out, but maybe they'll release it digitally eventually

mh, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:50 (six years ago) link

no vinyl is still available

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:55 (six years ago) link

Hmmm... let me put it this way, The Bunker release really reminds me of a comp I would have bought in my early 20s, or even a teenager. Not sure why that is...

And I do hear what you're saying of course. I should add I don't think that this record is a landmark release or anything, it just struck me that I hadn't posted on ILM for a while ;)

I was interested in that Dreamy Harbour Tresor collection btw, but found it a bit dull when I checked it, even sorta exhausting to listen to.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:55 (six years ago) link

xp

hardwax has a copy anyway

lots of copies on discogs still at retail (40 EUR)

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:56 (six years ago) link

i quite liked "dreamy harbour" ... it was my going-to-bed music for awhile

the late great, Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:57 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I suspect I might have to return to it. The contributing artists list alone tells me it's something I should be into.

Laurel Halo was an astonishingly good DJ when I saw her a few years back, lots of Principe-style rhythmic workouts and bleepy early techno, I'm surprised she hasn't had her name attached to something like this before

this kind of thoughtless brutal techno doesn't usually excite me because we've all heard a million other things like it but this feels particularly demented the deeper into its spiralling madness it descends
