Voted. As far as campaigning -- everyone should listen to the Spectral Voice album, which is a perfectly idiomatic example of spooky, doomy death. Atmospheric in places, crushing in others. The whole vibe is spot on.

That's sounding good.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 29 January 2018 15:12 (six years ago) link

Closing track of the Forgotten Spell (see Youtube for more) is one of the best metal songs of the year, yeah.

The Psudoku is not really for anyone except tt, ultros and I. Maybe Dominique. Hyperactive Cardiacsy grindcore, y'all. You've been warned.

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:14 (six years ago) link

never heard of Psodouku until now, but it's fun after 2 tracks! Kind of Melt Banana-ish? Also, I sincerely hope the name is a combination of Psyopus and Sudoku.

Dominique, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

Count me in on Psudoku, though I heard it too late to vote for it. Not normally my thing.

xp

beard papa, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:49 (six years ago) link

you can always resubmit your ballot ;)

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

track 5 (the REALLY unpronounceable one) is my pick

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

Will listen to Spectral Voice a bit later too, cheers

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

Spectral Voice is great

ArchCarrier, Monday, 29 January 2018 16:00 (six years ago) link

ok, time to go through all the things mentioned in this thread before voting

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 22:05 (six years ago) link

Check out Azonic too--Blind Idiot God's "orchestral doom" project, cuts a path between the drone of Sunn 0))) & the maelstroms of Fushitsusha, plus tympani and gong

It's probably a little late in the game but I'll try to promote some more of my favorite space-rock choices here. I'm always a little embarrassed trying to justify dragging this stuff into this poll, but it does tend to draw some decent reactions here & there...

(Also: don't forget Multishiva!)

IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU'RE NOT SCREAMING part 1:

The Imajinary Friends - The Imajinary Friends
https://theimajinaryfriends.bandcamp.com

Admittedly, it's already a stretch to include space rock in this poll, but its prob an even further stretch to consider this 'space rock': more like potent zone-out acid rock, maybe the most potent head music album I've heard since Black Bananas' Rad Time Xpress IV. It's true that this was a one-off side project for shoegazers like Swervedriver & Brian Jonestown Massacre, their sole caustic acid-fried album released over 20 years ago. And it's true the lead off track brings to mind a lost Broadcast song, prob the least metal thing to touch this thread. Still: this stuff is heavy in the best sense of the world...

IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU'RE NOT SCREAMING part 2:

Vespero - Shum-Shir
http://music.vespero.ru/album/shum-shir

Maybe even less metal than Imajinary Friends but this isn't really that out of place among other stuff like Sungod, Zombi & Kayo Dot's Coffins on Io. These Russian space-rockers have shown up on my radar once or twice before, but this is the first album that really broke through to me. Basically the concept reads to me as "Fela in space", but there's many unusual elements, like violin and breakbeats, along with the weird alien hyperclarity in the production which often accompany the nerdier corners of *rock*, all of which serves to denaturalize matters quite a bit. I mean, yeah I see how 'neoprog Ozric clones deconstruct afrobeat' might not be the most appealing proposition, but I found this engaging and offbeat

IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU'RE NOT SCREAMING part 3:

https://youtu.be/s4b4rXvh3

^the other key track from Choas & Systems. probably should've led off with this one, seeing as it doesn't bite "Pink Lady Lemonade"

In the metal thread no one can hear you campaigning

IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU'RE NOT SCREAMING part 4:

Liquidarlo Celuloide - Superfriccion
https://buhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/br84-liquidarlo-celuloide-superfricci-n

More like 'space punk' this time. Apparently this Peruvian band has been around for a long time. They're totally bonkers, and come across like a more psychedelic Brainiac. This album tends to have two modes: 'manic' and 'frantic'. That said, this might be a touch too much straightforward garage rock for attn defct crew, but I think the first 50 seconds of "Sin piel por no fabricar pegamento" might be sufficient to provide imago with a stray grin

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 21:08 (six years ago) link

this poll ends on saturday night so dont leave it too late to vote. We NEED to get the runout started on Monday so no extra days , voting period has been very long (longest ever)

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 22:18 (six years ago) link

I was hoping to sneak in a bit more time to listen to other nominees, but I think I'm just going to have to suck it up and vote.

IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU'RE NOT SCREAMING part 5:

Nik Turner - Life in Space
https://nikturnermusic.bandcamp.com/album/life-in-space-3

Nobody understands the impulse to write this off more than me; I was all set to play this once and forget. I half-suspect this was the album that made GOTT PUNCH say "fuck it" & nominate Pontiak. Even after the first track, an ok-to-middling ballad, I still figured this was some sort of throwaway anachronism. Then the second track came on, and by the time I made it to the fairly transporting echo-drenched gutar solo, I was won over. Featuring the drummer and guitarist from the old punk band UK Subs

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:40 (six years ago) link

since i assume most are still to vote

also anyone can resubmit their ballot as long as they say so on here so we can check

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:41 (six years ago) link

anyway, it's v late in the game, but i'd like to particularly rep for

- lunatii's elimino, basically a fake early katatonia record, beautifully, shatteringly depressing, it's all i wanted to listen to last year (https://lunatiiofficial.bandcamp.com/album/elimino-2017)
- the new godflesh, it's so cool and good and i can never stop thinking about it, it's like broadrick employing every style he's ever explored at once (https://godflesh1.bandcamp.com/album/post-self)
- paradise lost's medusa, obv, feels like after the shift in style in their last record they've really arrived on this one
- spectral voice, who are mentioned upthread, and who are one of the rare bands who really get the death/doom balance right, mesmerizing record
- ingurgitating oblivion's vision wallows in symphonies of light which iirc was a joan crawford recommendation. it lives up to the title (https://ingurgitatingoblivion1.bandcamp.com/album/vision-wallows-in-symphonies-of-light)
- fucking couch slut, my god
- king woman! stoner metal packed with hooks!
- idk the new cannibal corpse and immolation records fucking rock

yeah i think that's it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:07 (six years ago) link

Couch Slut and King Woman are both going to be very prominent on my ballot

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:19 (six years ago) link

Closing track of Couch Slut is best doom of the year, and they're not a doom band

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:20 (six years ago) link

I was just listening to King Woman! Will have to re-check-out Couch Slut.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:30 (six years ago) link

i didn't manage to listen to it until this year but the code orange album is so, so, so brutal

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:38 (six years ago) link

love the code orange record, pretty unique sound

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

if we were doing a tracks poll "Bleeding in the Blur" might top mine

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:41 (six years ago) link

they're so stylistically varied while remaining 100 percent punishing, what a great unique band

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

i also forgot to nominate the new blood command but for me it ended up feeling like kind of a step down from funeral beach. the title track was still one of the best things i heard all year

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

I added cannibal corpse <3

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

thank u friend

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:08 (six years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:33 (six years ago) link

yo dinsdale, thanks for recommending the anakim record. the production sucks but everything else about it is amazing

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:19 (six years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:20 (six years ago) link

Dinsdale, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:30 (six years ago) link
