erik loomis says it all:
Seriously, why would you watch this? First, if you really want to know what is said, you can just read the thing in like 10% of the time, tops. Second, you already know what is going to be said. Third, it doesn’t matter. It will take up the next 48 hours of news media, then Trump will tweet something about the NFL or something, and all the takes that “Trump’s presidency is on the right track!” will be once again replaced with noting that he is an old monstrous fascist.Even under a Democratic administration, these displays of political theater are useless and I refuse to watch. They get pumped up in the 24-hour news cycle as Major Events. They are not. They never are. Even if you wanted to watch Obama give SOTU addresses because you admired the man, there is zero reason to watch Donald Trump spew drivel about immigrants.Just. Don’t. Watch.

I'll say this about the STFU of the Union, every time they start talking about it on the radio I scream and change the channel. It's like the Oscars for pundits or some shit.

I hope he gets a fresh diaper before the big speech!

I wonder if plans are in motion to hijack the feed of the SOTU and replace it, ala Tapeheads, with the world premiere of the Pee Tape,

i oddly enjoy the wrenching detached experience of watching the spectacle in real-time
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:22 (six years ago) link
i also want to see if/how he'll react to an audience that isn't 100% supportive. it's very rare that he exposes himself to it, especially in front a huge live audience. in the debates he would take pride in fighting back against the boos. and maybe it even worked for him in that setting. not sure how all that translates to tonight.
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:24 (six years ago) link
I would love it if the democrats would openly boo him, but that's obviously not happening.
― Moodles, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link
yea i can't watch this thing
― marcos, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:54 (six years ago) link
i'm happier the less i think about this asshole
This is pretty much how I feel

bc it necessarily means watching form his little asshole mouth into a sphincter while he makes his thumb-finger gestures

i also want to see if/how he'll react to an audience that isn't 100% supportive.
Yeah, omg, how will he respond to the sight of so many democrats sitting down and not clapping.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 22:12 (six years ago) link
wasn't Bush's "axis of evil" bit from a SOTU address? is that the last time anything memorable/significant was said at one of these?
(or said by the actual president at least? wasn't that dude shouting "you lie" at Obama at a SOTU? and Rubio stopping to swig from a bottle of water during his rebuttal?)
(NB I'm not American so this isn't “I don’t own a TV” style performative ignorance, just genuine ignorance)
― soref, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 22:17 (six years ago) link
probably will stream it while listening to ambient techno and surfing the web

I would only watch this if I thought there was a chance that I could be part of the shared cathartic experience of watching him stroke out and die on live television, but I'm realistic about the slim chances of my outliving him.

i'm remembering that no one benefits more from the time-honored "tell stories of american heroes and call them out on the crowd for a standing ovation" technique than terrible fucking presidents. over and over, the entire room stands up and gives a standing ovation. to the casual viewer trump appears to be killing it and even winning the democrats over.
