I just heard this for the first time a couple days ago thanks to Rolling Country. I really enjoyed it.

sorry to go back to the ulver record but i forgot how gorgeous the chorus of "angelus novus" was

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:09 (six years ago) link

i should've voted, then Antisocialites would've had a #1

maybe next year (i say that every year)

alpine static, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:15 (six years ago) link

a lot of heavy hitters have already placed so I'm hoping for some real surprises

Simon H., Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:17 (six years ago) link

You can practically see the dry ice coming off this Ulver record.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:18 (six years ago) link

^^^^ excellent description

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:20 (six years ago) link

I really liked "He Called Me Baby" and "Talking Behind Your Back" from the LAW album. Hopefully its presence means Sunny Sweeney and maybe Angaleena Presley will also show up later?

Jeff W, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link

This alvvays album is fine I guess. It's the kind of thing I would have no problem playing around the house while doing other things. I just can't imagine being enthusiastic about this kind of music.

silverfish, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:25 (six years ago) link

Still holding out faint hope for Nikki Lane, but although some people are positive on it, I seem to be its only stan.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:26 (six years ago) link

not having much luck with tonight's pick, nothing really grabs me and this Wolf Alice thing is ugh

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:28 (six years ago) link

Lee Ann Womack album is incredible. She's peaking.

I voted for a slew of country albums but I kinda think this will be the only one to show.

oh yyyyyeah love this record

nxd, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:31 (six years ago) link

perfect for falling to sleep to

nxd, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:31 (six years ago) link

i couldn't get into this despite it seemingly being up my alley. will try again maybe.

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:31 (six years ago) link

haha crazy days! didn’t get round to hearing this but the pan daijing album was immense

faust apes (NickB), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

I had a nagging feeling I would love this if I gave it a chance, but I never did. Will do soon.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

felt seasonal last year but in every season :)

nxd, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:33 (six years ago) link

I think this was an exceptional year for compilations. Welcome to Paradise, Mono No Aware, Outro Tempo, that Fourth world one.

omar little, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:33 (six years ago) link

The spoken word bits were really off-putting to me. An ok record otherwise.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:37 (six years ago) link

yeah i think some of the spoken stuff was what was keeping me from enjoying it

ciderpress, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:39 (six years ago) link

oh i normally feel the same but it worked well on this for me

nxd, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:42 (six years ago) link

literally nothing I voted for (apart from HNDRXX? Can't remember) has placed yet. you all either have terrible taste or great taste depending on what's coming up

Badgers (dog latin), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:43 (six years ago) link

LAW really picks up after a couple of minutes, is it all or mostly in this bracing country-rock vein?

imago, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:46 (six years ago) link

great record

brimstead, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:46 (six years ago) link

There were enough good ambient albums last year; this collection didn't add a lot to it for me.

I really want to like Lee Ann Womack but I can't find my way in. Country perchance my final frontier.

gr8080, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:52 (six years ago) link

this is a good record

gr8080, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:53 (six years ago) link

Indeed.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:54 (six years ago) link

That Mono No Aware went completely under my radar. Will definitely check it out.

Was surprised the Microcosm comp on Light In The Attic wasn't nominated, especially as it was a spiritual sequel to the I Am The Center one that did well in the poll a couple of years ago. Maybe the fact it came out late last year scuppered its chances.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:54 (six years ago) link

Yep.

xps

pomenitul, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 20:54 (six years ago) link

I really enjoyed one CG album a few years back (one of the beck produced ones) but this one didn’t do much for me i’m afraid.

faust apes (NickB), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:02 (six years ago) link

This has been one of my most played records over the last couple of months. Such beautifully rich music.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:02 (six years ago) link

looking forward to checking some of these out! don't really know any of the ones so far except I listened to a bit of the Ulver during the nominations, definitely not for me.

spotify

gr8080, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:15 (six years ago) link

ok there's a surprise

Simon H., Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:16 (six years ago) link

Hey now! I really should've voted for this one.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:18 (six years ago) link

Same. It grew on me in December, but fell off the ballot in the end. It's very nice.

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:18 (six years ago) link

That Japanese Breakfast album is rad. I'm not one of the 7 however. So far, only 2 of my votes have made the cut (Elder and Kesha) but this list is seriously great so far. Thank you as always for doing this. Re-visiting the Ulver album has been a blast, probably should have voted for that too. Digging the Karen Gwyer a lot, had not heard this before.

gman59, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:20 (six years ago) link

"Till Death" is such a jam

gman59, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:21 (six years ago) link

So still not a lot coming up here that I've previously heard, but I'm listening to the thread playlist and wow, tons of great stuff this year. Good job, everyone!

Moodles, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:28 (six years ago) link

Did not connect with this LAW album half as much as the last one, but it's still very good. Liddell is so good. I like the Brent Cobb songs especially.

The Japanese Breakfast album was very high on my list - big step up from Psychopomp.

Indexed, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:30 (six years ago) link

I kinda preferred Psychopomp? I loved the sugar rush I got from those mini dream-pop anthems, which kinda completely disappeared from this record.

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:33 (six years ago) link

Awesome! I was so close to putting Soft Sounds as my number one. My favourite indie pop record of the last 10 years. She's an incredible songwriter.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:33 (six years ago) link

I tried Lee Ann's record a couple times when it came out and thought it was fine, but it sounds amazing to me today.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link

japanese breakfast enjoyed by kitchen person

imago, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:41 (six years ago) link

anyway today has mostly sounded like a really tasteful home decoration catalogue, let's have something a bit rowdier next

imago, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:43 (six years ago) link

re: LAW - The Way I'm Livin' had Hayes Carll's "Chances Are," Chris Knight's "Send It On Down," and Bruce Robison's "Not Forgotten You," songs that made my heart hurt but played as sweet and lullaby-esque. The only song that hit that gear for me on The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone for me was Cobb's "Shine on Rainy Day," and I prefer his version by a wide margin.

For those looking for some new faces in country this year, I'd highly recommend Tyler Childers' Purgatory and Jaime Wyatt's Felony Blues. The former got more critical love. The latter is a nice reboot and slimmed down version of the late 70s/early 80s Emmylou Harris records.

Indexed, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 21:46 (six years ago) link

that Fourth world one.
