i enjoyed this the first time i heard it but never felt the urge to go back to it after that

I liked this more than the other St Vincent albums I've heard but I'm not totally won over. A lot of the things that have been placing yesterday and today are things I've listened to once and thought 'yeah, this is alright'.

I'm giving the Holden album another try, thought it was totally unremarkable on first go.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 14:46 (six years ago) link

Oh, I'm liking the Holden quite a bit.

This has been a great start to the day. Gaussian Curve is another one I discovered from the overlooked albums of the year thread. Such a beautiful album.

Delighted to see The Clientele make it, I'd given up hope of them placing. Some days I think it's the best thing they've ever done. The best reunion album this year by some distance.

I had a feeling St Vincent wasn't going to be as high as previous years. Her backlash seems to be in full swing now. I preferred the S/T album, but really not by much. Ignoring the David Byrne album, she's one of the most consistent artists going.

Glad to see Blanck Mass and James Holden.

:(

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:10 (six years ago) link

As I said on the Holden thread, I think he's pretty much the only 00s dance producer who stepped away from the dancefloor and became more rather than less interesting.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:10 (six years ago) link

Destroyer also likely to appear, then, I guess.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:10 (six years ago) link

see you in another half hour

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:11 (six years ago) link

3 first place votes!

kitchen person, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:11 (six years ago) link

too high!

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:13 (six years ago) link

as a guy who liked Lost in the Dream, lemme just say that Deeper Understanding is bloated and unfocused, with 2.5 good songs left to languish in the 70 minutes of runtime

OK this Holden album is pretty good, don't know what I was thinking before (although yeah nothing on it is as great as his remix of 'The Sky Was Pink').

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:19 (six years ago) link

pretty high bar, that

Thomas NAGL (Neil S), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:20 (six years ago) link

The War on Drugs are a band that seem appealing in theory but in practice their albums are bloated and unmemorable unfortunately

I'm shocked, legit shocked, that AWOD has enough of an ILM fanbase.

It's not THAT bad, is it?

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:27 (six years ago) link

they were top 10 in 2014 so this is about where i expected them to show up

yeah this record to me didn't even seem to have a "red eyes" to anchor it, it was just free-floating mediocrity

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:27 (six years ago) link

WOD is another joke entry, yes?

another perennial feature of these rollouts is the realizations that there are a bunch of indie rock listeners around here

Father John Misty isn't going to place is he?

Just a bunch?

xp

pomenitul, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:30 (six years ago) link

not really into the new sassy St Vincent. sounds like someone buying way too much into their own hype. an overblown album that plays with ideas of emotion while sounding tremendously flat. and i say this as someone who loved her stuff beforehand. this is her Merriweather Post Pavilion I guess

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:32 (six years ago) link

I liked one of the singles on this WOD album but I can't imagine ever getting through the whole album

Simon H., Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:34 (six years ago) link

my favorite post about war on drugs:

the music this draws from hits me in a deeply nostalgic place, really the sounds themselves and i enjoy this band as a child in many ways and therefore understand their ultimate dullness but like them in a way that i'm not inclined to interrogate.

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:37 (six years ago) link

is that three or four compilations now? not that i'm complaining too much if it's good

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:39 (six years ago) link

I rushed out and bought this based on a 30 second cursory listen on Spotify. It's the kind of thing which once you hear it you wonder how you coped without it. No hyperbole, it's been an aural salve for me over a year of ups and downs. Just plain spectacular. The cover is great too.

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:40 (six years ago) link

single artist comp of stuff that was virtually unreleased prior

gr8080, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:41 (six years ago) link

cool ok.

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:41 (six years ago) link

imago, you heard this yet?

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link

the Alice Coltrane compilation is so great, and doesn't even have the best tracks from those releases imo!

sleeve, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:43 (six years ago) link

hearing it now! really liked her appearance on the iirc ten-minute songs poll

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:43 (six years ago) link

first thing i voted for to place

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

same

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

ha, I think that's true for me as well

sleeve, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

I don't like seeing Alice Coltrane slumming it with such fucking riff-raff tho!

the 'phet offensive (calzino), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

joking, of course

the 'phet offensive (calzino), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

I love Journey in Satchidananda and Translinear Light but this stuff mostly made me think of having to go to the temple and sing bhajans tbh (which isn't really a good thing). I should probably listen for the way it intersects with the gospel and jazz elements and the trippy organ but I probably have too many hangups to really deal with it.
