For no real reason, I had stopped keeping up with sad computer music. The Four Tet is sounding very satisfying and comforting so far. I think There Is Love in You was the last one I heard by them.

This is definitely an album that matches the position its ended up at. Not quite as brilliant as Words & Music and Tales From Turnpike House, but still a beautiful record that I went back to a lot over the summer. It's a very comforting record.

the album cover for this reminds me driving past our old family home - it's nice to see it's still standing and well cared for but i really wouldn't want to move back in there again. so p much how i feel about st etienne in general tbh

faust apes (NickB), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:13 (six years ago) link

Dive and Magpie Eyes are both particularly top-notch.

the album feels like sort of a halfway point between Turnpike House and Words & Music, musically speaking it takes a bit from both.

omar little, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:14 (six years ago) link

I was happily surprised by how much I liked a couple of the St. Etienne tracks (from the nominations playlist, I guess), but then I couldn't get past the beginning of the album. I've never cared for them, but maybe should give it another try.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:22 (six years ago) link

Lots of sad computer music sounds meditative and content if you imagine a serene snapshot of nature, but crushingly sad if you instead picture a happy family smiling together at the dinner table or something. I blame cinema.

Oh hey cool, Blanck Mass, my second one to show.

(Going into the poll, I would've thought that I had about 6 dead certs show up--Ex Eye being a seventh when it appeared--but I feel like it's time to scale that number down to 3...)

love this record and yes her first album is the best

nxd, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:43 (six years ago) link

Saint Etienne my #3. I've said this before on ILM but this was the album I always hoped they'd make, the potential of bits and pieces from the earlier records fully realised at last. Sarah's never sounded better, certainly. At the same time, some tracks came perilously close to self-parody.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:44 (six years ago) link

i don't get this record and i feel like every time i say that i end up in an argument. more power to charli though

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

I couldn't get into either Charli mixtape :(

Jeff W, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

Really didn't realise this was so popular on here. I preferred Number 1 Angel (which I'm guessing has missed out?) Neither of the mixtapes came close to how much I love True Romance or Sucker.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

you are all terrible people

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:47 (six years ago) link

every song is a tuuuuune

nxd, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

was really shocked how great this was, was not expecting Charli + PC Music to finally deliver after one dreadful EP and one merely ok mixtape together and years of mediocrity from PC Music. it's pretty easily her best release. the p4k review describing it as "My Teenage Dream Ended except good" is completely otm about its appeal (except MTDE rules too of course)

so many great moments - the cut up second half of Backseat, the screams on the chorus of Tears & the dreamy outro, "if you want my love, try to unlock it!", all of Track 10

ufo, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:52 (six years ago) link

Have been listening to little but this album the last week. Absolutely amazing. Wish I had voted for it, happy to see it place

Frederik B, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:58 (six years ago) link

Oh is this PC Music? :)

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 17:59 (six years ago) link

ufo with some nice takes in both threads

nxd, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link

Oh is this PC Music? :)

A. G. Cook executive produced and there are a bunch of PC Music production credits on individual tracks, but as a whole it's very much a Charli album.

fffv, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:06 (six years ago) link

Sounds cool!

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link

I like Gaussian Curve's basic sound on this album so far but I keep wanting something more to happen, either melodically, rhythmically, or texturally.

Thankfully not higher

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:13 (six years ago) link

if they had to "reunite" a 12" single would have sufficed

Simon H., Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link

did anyone actually posting itt vote for this?

sleeve, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link

re: charli. I'll back up that "all of Track 10" comment. In the runnings for my favorite album ender of 2017

gman59, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:15 (six years ago) link

Sund4r very otm about Gaussian Curve; kinda lazy to suggest instrumental music needs vocals, but GC is beautiful backdrop in desperate need of some drama from somewhere

Rollout is a travesty this year, though tbf my ballot was the least enthused I've ever submitted

rob, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:16 (six years ago) link

I liked this when it first came out. The last couple of times I played it, I realised that it should have been an EP. Oh Baby, I Used To, Tonite and Call The Police would have done it. There's no reason at all for the album to be as long as it is.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:17 (six years ago) link

Blanck Mass is such a mediocrity imo, I'm hoping it was an accident + people really meant to vote for the Varg album which has the same album cover.

the 'phet offensive (calzino), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:17 (six years ago) link

Too low!

Frederik B, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:19 (six years ago) link

I enjoy a fair bit of American Dream but it's pretty easily their worst. more than usual of the straight up pastiche tracks and a fair few lesser retreads of their past too.

ufo, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:21 (six years ago) link

just low enough

love this band, voted for this record, but i 100% co-sign this^

gr8080, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:21 (six years ago) link

I think I've listened to American Dream more front to back than any of their other albums. First one they've done where the whole is bigger than the sum of it's parts.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:21 (six years ago) link

although I'm actually digging "Suspended Motion"

drama is exactly what gaussian curve does not need

Blanck Mass was my number 1. simply ended up playing it more than anything else last year. I've kind of questioned "was this what I liked best, or was it just what most frequently met my listening needs?" but whatever. I voted for the Varg album as well, but they aren't that similar outside of the covers.

fffv, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:24 (six years ago) link

Xp. That's what i wanted to say. It is the first time i listen to gaussian curve but their music relaxes me and i love it. Great discovery.

Voted for Call The Police . Didn't vote for the album.

you might be right and maybe "drama" isn't really my problem. I don't know, hard to describe, but I found this totally enervating (not relaxing) after a while

rob, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:29 (six years ago) link

fffv did you get a chance to see him (BM) live this year? it was easily my favorite show I've seen in awhile. complete sensory overload in the best way.

gman59, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link
