this record is not really my thing though i loved the singles

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link

Ended up putting this in my top five. Such a stunning record.

For me it's the fact that LCD Soundsystem they had a pompous farewell show at Madison Square Garden in 2011, instantly packaged for blu-ray. It's just too soon. If they want to make a big deal about reuniting, they should wait another 15 years. Or never would be okay too.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:44 (six years ago) link

love Aromanticism, especially Lonely World. it is quite In Rainbows-adjacent but that's a very good thing to me

the LCD Soundsystem reunion comes off a bit weird after the farewell spectacular, but NIN did a similar thing not too long ago and I don't really have a problem with it, I just wish the album was a little better (it's not even bad, but was certainly overrated in EOY stuff elsewhere)

ufo, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:47 (six years ago) link

Really wanted to like the Sumney but it was a bit too sombre-Radiohead for me in the end. Can see the appeal

― imago

I really like the idea of Radiohead doing a song where the only lyrics are, "I’m not tryna go to bed with you, I just wanna make out in my car" repeated over and over.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link

The Moses Sumney is gorgeous, and a steady grower - if I was voting now, I'd have placed it higher (and it was already my #10).

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:50 (six years ago) link

Thom Yorke will evidently end up copying Bjork (as ever) and make a post-breakup 'Tinder album', so not so hard to believe maybe

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:53 (six years ago) link

I like Gaussian Curve's basic sound on this album so far but I keep wanting something more to happen, either melodically, rhythmically, or texturally.

You could say that about loads of electronic or instrumental or ambient music. Curious why you feel that way about this one in particular.

lcd has always been repulsive to me

marcos, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:58 (six years ago) link

xp disagree, it was a cold calculated cash-out as befits a cold, calculated band that is the living embodiment of Record Collector Rock

sleeve, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 18:59 (six years ago) link

James Murphy is my least favorite Tom Wilkinson role.

I don't like the new LCD Soundsystem album, but I don't get being angry about them getting back together too soon. It just seems so unimportant. Listen to the album to decide if you like it or not.

silverfish, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:00 (six years ago) link

wait actually I like that 45:33 thing as well, sorry all

yes, though I like about half of the debut album and 45:33. LCD Soundsystem has become less interesting and fun with each successive album and the couple of songs I've heard from this one lead me to believe that this streak is continuing post reunion.

26 BIG THIEF "Capacity" (362 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote)
spotify

gr8080, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:06 (six years ago) link

i don’t know much about this band besides that fact that they were in a ton of year end lists, but i did read that the cover art is a photo of the lead singer being held by her uncle

gr8080, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

which is cool imo

gr8080, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

Hadn't made the Radiohead comparison with Moses Sumney (Jeff Buckley in angelic mode was my immediate reaction), but listening now I can hear it on Quarrel for sure, though the last bit resolves into languid Stevie Wonder.

the tiny desk concert is worth putting on if you like him: https://www.npr.org/event/music/566905758/moses-sumney-tiny-desk-concert

rob, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

oh yeh their last album had an old school photo as cover art too iirc

nxd, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:09 (six years ago) link

this album is amazing

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:09 (six years ago) link

Capacity was one of the last albums I cut from my ballot. Definitely deserves to be here.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:09 (six years ago) link

I think I need to listen to this another half dozen times or it to really sink in. I know it'll happen but there's a little effort involved

Simon H., Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:10 (six years ago) link

album is so good, haley might be one of the best songs i've ever heard

I was surprised to be the only voter for Shark Smile in the tracks poll

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link

Man two of my top ten right in a row. Big Thief was my #2 so fantastic.

I imagine there was a lot to Big Thief vote splitting, I had Haley as my #5 track

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:25 (six years ago) link

Shark Smile is...really good

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:27 (six years ago) link

Title track even better. Have I been sleeping on this?

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:29 (six years ago) link

I've never even heard of this, what is it?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:33 (six years ago) link

I think you might like them matt. Give Shark Smile a listen

They got 78'd in tracks, so justice is largely served here. Magnificent album. (xp Big Thief)

I was going to listen to the rest of the album to try to pinpoint an answer to this, put it on headphones this time, and now I'm starting to like it.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:51 (six years ago) link

even if you don't personally enjoy this album there's no denying its achievement, I don't think. this is a good placement for it.

Simon H., Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:52 (six years ago) link

the second of my picks to place.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:53 (six years ago) link

Only listened to that mount eerie album once but wow that was one fucking incredible experience.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:54 (six years ago) link

ranking that album by number misses the point of it so i'm mostly just happy to see other people felt it too

the concrete flipside to L'Rain's abstraction of grief - I like it but it isn't so easy to return to. find the fact of its making most impressive and I'm glad he was able to do it

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:56 (six years ago) link

very powerful but i don't really ever want to listen to it, not that that means it's bad or anything though

ufo, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 19:57 (six years ago) link

Big Thief album is EXCELLENT btw, v glad I stuck around for the whole thing because the opening track was the only thing I was unsure of

imago, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 20:01 (six years ago) link

it's official, everyone likes the big thief record

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 20:07 (six years ago) link

big thief wasn't bad but didn't really capture my interest when i listened, will give it another try though

ufo, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 20:08 (six years ago) link

well it is a thief not a kidnapper

President Keyes, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 20:09 (six years ago) link

I think I've listened to American Dream more front to back than any of their other albums. First one they've done where the whole is bigger than the sum of it's parts.

Exactly how I felt about The War on Drugs.

Moses Sumney album is beautiful - the way "Doomed" builds and swells emotionally blows me away considering how little is actually going on there.

Tried to like/appreciate the LCD Soundsystem and Mount Eerie albums. Listened to both albums numerous times and decided I actively disliked ~2/3 of the songwriting on both in a way I never did with their previous stuff.

Indexed, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 20:11 (six years ago) link

Lyrics aren't usually a way into a record for me, but the Big Thief record is *heavy* in that regard.
