Seems possible/probable(?)
I'm not sure about the Vince Staples and xx predictions from monotony above, and I think this particular Jessie Ware album is an extreme longshot, so three spots could be up for grabs and the Mountain Goats might lay claim to one of them.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:29 (six years ago) link
I can't fathom a year where a Destroyer album is released and all the Bejar nerds don't push it into the poll, though, whether it's any good or not.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:32 (six years ago) link
all of this speculation makes me think that my #1 won't make it, although I still have hope!
― Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:35 (six years ago) link
Tyler The Creator, Ibeyi, Phoebe Bridgers and Gas are all artists I would have expected to place somewhere in the list, but the top 20 seems a bit high.
Jessie Ware and Miguel both got mixed reactions on their threads. It would seem weird if they both missed out though.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:38 (six years ago) link
Considering how beloved his past work is, it's incredible how tepid the response to that Gas album was (and it even got good reviews when it came out!)
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:40 (six years ago) link
Outside chances of Aldous Harding (though I wouldn't really imagine it beating Big Thief), maybe Octa Octa ... don't think Nite Jewel's going to make it. Would be nice to substitute Re-TROS for LCD Soundsystem and as much as I like Sacred Paws, it's be nice to have Simi's Simisola for contemporary Nigerian highlife rather than a Scottish indie take on the 80s stuff :/
― etc, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:40 (six years ago) link
Also Octo Octa's gotta make the top 20
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:41 (six years ago) link
It would seem weird if they both missed out though.
It would seem extremely weird if they both landed in the top 20.
I've got six from my ballot in the 21-77 range, and I expect to see between four and five in the top 20, so I really can't complain too hard about pet favorites missing out.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:42 (six years ago) link
monotony's list looks good. not sure if there was enough enthusiasm for the miguel, vince, and jay though
― Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:43 (six years ago) link
How about Perfume Genius? Definitely deserves to be here. Not sure it got that much buzz unfortunately.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:45 (six years ago) link
ILM seems less about new release buzz now and more about fighting over 30 year old albums (except for the k-pop and rap thread(s)).
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:47 (six years ago) link
Did anyone actually hear the Jay-Z album though? I hear Martin Shkreli has the only copy or something.

xp I loved Narkopop! would have been my #1, but for one other album....
― Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:52 (six years ago) link
I considered Perfume Genius but I don't think he's ever placed on an ILM list and I'm not sure that there was a big enough voting bloc to get him there this time.
― monotony, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:53 (six years ago) link
would love octo octa in the top 20 but i don't see it placing unless it got a big tim f bump. then again it does seem like it could be a broad consensus record, i just didn't see her album mentioned much
― sophistipop 2 (stritram), Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:54 (six years ago) link
I think "Queen" maybe made the tracks poll whatever year that was, but I could totally be wrong too. I'm old and I forget things. xp
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:55 (six years ago) link
Yeah, his previous album didn't place in 2014 and I don't think this one was much that more popular. It's my favourite album of his by a long way.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 1 February 2018 02:58 (six years ago) link
I've heard comparisons to Talk Talk on the new one. However unfounded, that's enough to make me want to check it out at some point.

As we saw from the tracks poll, an endorsement from tim goes a long way

no goldfrapp?
― kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 1 February 2018 03:33 (six years ago) link
iirc people stopped talking about that approximately 4 days after it came out.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 February 2018 03:34 (six years ago) link
that's a mistake on their part then
― kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 1 February 2018 03:36 (six years ago) link
Loving the rollout but really could do without the heavy anti-indie snark, I think there is legit reasons to love the War on Drugs and heh I'd love for some of the posters to respect that.

Goldfrapp are possibly my favourite band of the last 20 years and I've enjoyed every album they've made, but I didn't vote for Silver Eye. After the perfection of Tales Of Us (which was my number one vote in the 2013 poll) this album was a relative disappointment and ended up being one of their lesser albums for me. More of a Headfirst/Supernature than a Tales Of Us/Black Cherry/Seventh Tree style masterpiece.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 1 February 2018 03:53 (six years ago) link
VHS is OTM. It's disheartening but is what is is i guess.
The War on Drugs is a fantastic record but do understand the hate. Spoon is underrated as hell for a dance record but still happened made the Top 77. The National has a song called "Day I Die" that somehow sums up everything for 2017.
― the future is now, Thursday, 1 February 2018 04:02 (six years ago) link
Kitchen - the first two tracks on "silver eye" are retreads of supernature's former glory but with a duller execution, but third track tiger man changes that and dovetails the record into more sublime pop fare. The first two tracks are a red herring imo, a majority of this record pitches a middle ground between black cherry and tales of us, most prominently on "beast that never was". album deserves re-evaluation IMO, the sequencing is a bit beguiling at first
― kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 1 February 2018 04:08 (six years ago) link
Haven’t been following this poll since I’ve been busy but just want to say TOO LOW on Big Thief and Sacred Paws.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 1 February 2018 04:17 (six years ago) link
Beguiling means good though?
― albvivertine, Thursday, 1 February 2018 04:27 (six years ago) link
― kolakube (Ross),
There are some songs I rate very highly on there (especially Tigerman, Everything Is Never Enough and Moon In Your Mouth) and there aren't really any songs I really dislike as such. As a whole it just didn't grab me like their best and most compelling work. Usually when they bring out an album, it's all I can listen to for a few months. I just didn't get there with this one and a year later it doesn't feel like an essential Goldfrapp release. Despite that, it hasn't harmed their legacy as one of the most consistent groups around.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 1 February 2018 04:34 (six years ago) link
beguiling can mean to charm someone deceptively, which i think this record does but ymmv
anyways kitchen, cheers mate

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Haim haven't been mentioned yet in top 20 speculation but they'll almost certainly show up.
idk if Destroyer will still place, i love Destroyer but it's a very minor album and i didn't vote for it
a little surprised Perfume Genius hasn't shown up yet but ilm's taste in indie still confuses me i guess
― ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 05:25 (six years ago) link
Wow I totally forgot Haim even released an album
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 1 February 2018 05:26 (six years ago) link
people seemed generally lukewarm on it but it was better than the debut despite the singles not reaching the same heights
― ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 05:34 (six years ago) link
There is a 0.0000000000000000% chance Haim places tomorrow. I'm surprised it didn't come in behind U2 in the voting.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 1 February 2018 05:37 (six years ago) link
That second Haim album was a heartbreaker. It totally deserves to miss out.

I think Monotony has nailed the top 20 with the exception of Jessie Ware and Jay-Z who won't get anywhere near. Something like the Octo Octa record or even Gas feel more likely. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is definitely in there. Also I can't work out if Taylor has been 78'ed or if she's just way too high here. TBH top 20 feels too high for the XX as well but I can't see that missing out altogether.
