(was top five for me!)

Ogmor, it may be that there are more tracks that sound recognizably like songs with verse-chorus structure. Maybe gives more people a way in as opposed to the more meditative loops and burbles plus mantras from the earlier albums.

Thought the Melanie Di Biasio album would've shown up by now.

nashwan, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:40 (six years ago) link

there are some really sweet cuts on this kelela album

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:41 (six years ago) link

I really really liked Thugger's Beautiful Thugger Girls and I'm slightly surprised ILM didn't care this year

Badgers (dog latin), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link

aw this was my number one, a genuine travesty that it isn't higher tbh

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link

Kelela album is good. I had to warm up to it because her earlier stuff was so lackluster and overrated. This time she delivers the goods.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link

so many layers of sound to get lost in

Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:44 (six years ago) link

At last. Obligatory 'too low'.

i voted for it, but too low on my balot. i think if there's one lesson i've learned is that i should do a mixed ballot. the stuff on the bottom of my ballot is often stuff i like a lot, but in a weighted ballot, i might as well have not voted for them at all.

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

Had an unweighted ballot but Kelela would've def been top 5 for me.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:45 (six years ago) link

after Octo Octa, GAS, Bicep, and Kelela, the top 10 is going to be a let down for me

Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:46 (six years ago) link

took a while to get into a couple of the cuts in the middle part, but now those slow-jamz-as-ambient tracks are some of my favourite songs

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:46 (six years ago) link

Just to backtrack a little, I don't get the love for Octo Octa's LP. I found it to be mildly enjoyable, often kind of bland.

And where's Dauwd ? Or Chloé?

xps

pomenitul, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:46 (six years ago) link

wow today rocks, lots of good albums

marcos, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:47 (six years ago) link

dauwd was on my ballot, but i'm p sure he came in @ ~#197

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

where is lady blacktronicka

brimstead, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:49 (six years ago) link

where's waldo

i like it but the dauwd album is way more bland than octo octa

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link

shocked at the absence of gaz coombes and yer granny on bongos

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:53 (six years ago) link

I forgot to vote for Melanie De Biaisio so I really hope it isn't sitting at #79 or something. By all rights it should have been on my ballot.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:53 (six years ago) link

i’m in and out of meetings all day today

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:05 (six years ago) link

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:07 (six years ago) link

and as for kehlani... ;)

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:08 (six years ago) link

Kelela and Kehlani!

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:08 (six years ago) link

it doesn't look like it's going to place so: i'm bummed that beach house 3 didn't make it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:08 (six years ago) link

yessss, Gas! so, so excited to see him live in the US in March, scroot scroooooot

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:09 (six years ago) link

The xx and Kehlani were my first 2017 album crushes. I growsed about her album's length but this made it easier to excerpt.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:09 (six years ago) link

One way or another
I'mma love you
Slidin' under covers, undercover
They don't wanna see it happen
But we say, "Fuck it"
They don't wanna see it happen
But we say, "Fuck it"

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:09 (six years ago) link

re: length, it helps that the songs are all really tightly constructed

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:10 (six years ago) link

yeah this breezes by

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:11 (six years ago) link

it doesn't look like it's going to place so: i'm bummed that beach house 3 didn't make it

I owe that a few more listens, I recall really enjoying it

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:12 (six years ago) link

i saw a review of beach house 3 that described it as a trap version of a sophistipop album so of course that description could only disappoint

ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:14 (six years ago) link

lol yeah i didn't get that description. it is really great but idk why it was released in october

sophistipop 2 (stritram), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:15 (six years ago) link

It's the K stretch! KLO next?

Pleased that Kehlani (voted for) beat Kelela (couldn't get into). KAS my #1

Jeff W, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:15 (six years ago) link

OK the Slowdive album is way too high at this stage.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:15 (six years ago) link

i think the only lists that have kehlani over kelela are this and spin's, which is a quasi-ilm list

sophistipop 2 (stritram), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:16 (six years ago) link

although separated by all of 2 points

Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:18 (six years ago) link

idk, i love the slowdive record. v rich and textured, progresses significantly from where they left off. every time i listened to it i found it remarkable, i'd only feel it was too high if it were like no. 1

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:21 (six years ago) link

"no longer making time" especially took me to a place that was distinct from, say, "blue skied an' clear" or "alison" but had just as much depth

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:22 (six years ago) link

it did miss my ballot though lol
