listening to this for the first time now, it's really nice!

Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:29 (six years ago) link

I probably listened to "Tell Me How" the most often on account of having it on loop during late-night walks

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:29 (six years ago) link

The Dauwd album isn't in the list because it's completely generic and forgettable.

― Matt DC, Thursday, February 1, 2018

Suit yourself/yourselves. I'll take it over Octo Octa any day.

nashwan, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:32 (six years ago) link

Two more I thought would be here by now but probably ex-77: Stormzy and Ariel Pink (given the number of tracks nominated)

nashwan, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:33 (six years ago) link

btw: as with the singles, i'll add the top 177 albums to the playlist mix as soon as the top ten are revealed

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:36 (six years ago) link

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

I don't remember if I ever listened to all of this (like quite a few of these winners).

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

(Where is everybody? What time is it everywhere else?)

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:47 (six years ago) link

It's 9 48 am here

Paramore album is incredible and the last 3 tracks are a perfect run

kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:48 (six years ago) link

lunch time on the east coast of the u.s.

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:49 (six years ago) link

good album, just missed my ballot.

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:49 (six years ago) link

what year is this?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:50 (six years ago) link

Kelly's album has the finest production this year front to back imo

kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:50 (six years ago) link

great album, wasn't expecting it to get so high. has the same feeling as Visions

ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:51 (six years ago) link

didn’t really enjoy this one at all iirc

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:52 (six years ago) link

I wanted to like this album more than I did. Lucid was the big standout for me. Nothing else quite hit me the same way.

it's one of those albums that i'm crazy about when listening, but a few times too often, i had to listen again just to remind myself how the songs go

hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

srsly, what was octo octa thinking with that album cover?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:54 (six years ago) link

the cover is good imo

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:54 (six years ago) link

Yeah love this and voted for it, didn't expect to see it top 10 mind

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:56 (six years ago) link

What's wrong with the octo octa cover?

i know kore-eda (or something), Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:56 (six years ago) link

S.O is the highlight for me

and i agree the Octo Octa album cover is good

ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:57 (six years ago) link

Kelly Lee Owens album is fantastic. Sonically, it would be fitting if Slowdive is up next.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 1 February 2018 17:58 (six years ago) link

Voted for all three Kel's and Paramore, happy but not surprised to see them place deservingly high.

devvvine, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:03 (six years ago) link

xp here's an interview with Octo Octa where she talks a little about the album cover:

I've given this record several plays and it always comes across as watery and nondescript. Like it's never unpleasant to listen to but there's nothing to draw you in either.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:11 (six years ago) link

the paramore album should've been on my ballot but i overlooked it somehow. their best songs are refined and as tightly constructed as great dance music, each element locked in and in response to another, and it's just relentlessly catchy. the bright, african-inspired guitar lines come across as genuinely exuberant when the wrong context could've made them seem precious.

spotify

gr8080, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:18 (six years ago) link

yes, this is an excellent album. if i'd had more time for it to sink it maybe it would have gone all the way to #1. love it.

omar little, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:22 (six years ago) link

very good album, if slightly less special than the s/t

Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:24 (six years ago) link

I really like this album but it was a slight letdown for me after the awesomeness of the self-titled and Shaking The Habitual

Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:25 (six years ago) link

Haha, you all said exactly what I was trying to type out over here, but much more clearly and succinctly.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:26 (six years ago) link

I can't find fault with this record, but I also can't quite feel as enthusiastic about it as I'd like to.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:27 (six years ago) link

Thanks for that link Dan S.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:29 (six years ago) link

s/t was a grower for me, at first i admired it a lot but felt it wasn't quite up to Silent Shout levels and then after immersing myself i loved it even more, to the point that it's probably my favorite album of the past decade along w/maybe Art Angels and a couple others.

the physical release of this is i think within the next couple weeks maybe?

omar little, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link

paramore's 'pool' would be at home at the bronze. the vocal melody in the bridge on 'caught in the middle' is reminiscent of something i listened to as a kid but i can't put my finger on it, maybe some weezer song?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link

oh wait, pinback lol

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

the fever ray is slowly growing on me after initially thinking it was just a lesser retreat of the knife, the videos and interviews helped.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:32 (six years ago) link

still feels like a lesser retread of the s/t and silent shout to me

ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:33 (six years ago) link

yep - loved the 1st Fever Ray, liked Shaking The Habitual, didn't connect with this new one at all. will re-listen eventually, I'm sure.

sleeve, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:33 (six years ago) link

going to see her in L.A. pretty soon, the live show from the s/t tour was one of the best i've ever seen.
