Psych folk is really not my thing but this thread has got me really curious about this record

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:19 (six years ago) link

I liked his song from the tracks list, but hadn't heard of him prior. Didn't realize he was so beloved here.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:19 (six years ago) link

a Dawson synth pop LP will sound like Kaputt and divide ILX more deeply than ever

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link

so good

scoff walker (diamonddave85), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link

I could not sit through The Vile Stuff & was quite taken aback about how engaging this was

I want a collaboration with Richard Youngs tbh

This would be amazing

Re: Peasant

Lol @ Brad

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:22 (six years ago) link

I'm actually enjoying Peasant a lot more in the depths of pissing winter than I did when it came out.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:22 (six years ago) link

I admire this way more than I actually enjoy it.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:22 (six years ago) link

this is one i admire more than enjoy really too. the intricate rhythms are really cool but a whole album of them is too much for me. would really love to hear something like it in more of a pop context though

ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:23 (six years ago) link

cool album I need to relisten to

bummed that ilm has no love for Daniel Caesar though

rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:24 (six years ago) link

I voted for Jlin

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:24 (six years ago) link

top record, chuffed it finished so high

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:25 (six years ago) link

this is a virtuoso-level command of rhythm and drum programming at play. in that regard, the comparisons to AFX are apt imo

scoff walker (diamonddave85), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:25 (six years ago) link

Pleasingly high placement! I didn't like the whole album but Challenge (To Be Continued) and 1% are all time. Voted for the latter in my tracks ballot.

Jeff W, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:26 (six years ago) link

Yesss. Happy to jump in this morning to find Jlin at #6

octobeard, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:27 (six years ago) link

Solid album, I voted for it, but like the Fever Ray, maybe don't love it unconditionally.

Moodles, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:29 (six years ago) link

dawson deserves much better detractors bc so many of the elements of peasant are offputting. i hate prog, hate british folk singing, hate acoustic guitarists getting a big band in to back them up, hate medieval reenacters, hate big thumping triumphant choruses, hate really high concept albums with songs from various characters' perspectives, and I definitely hate lines like "avowed to never draw another blade", and yet he pulls it all together with that little twinkle in his eye. his singing is much more expressive and powerful on this album, his always excellent phrasing is used to pull of some fantastic changes of pace, there's great guitar all over it and songs like shapeshifter are gently beguiling gems unlike anything else.

the jlin is really banging also

ogmor, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link

I think it's probably safe to say SW.'s brilliant The Album is not going to make it. Alas.

octobeard, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link

nicely put ogmor!

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:37 (six years ago) link

srsly, this album is like the celestial drum kit

rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:43 (six years ago) link

yes, v much so xp

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link

i really don’t get jlin

it’s neat and all, but like how do ppl adore this music the way they do

gr8080, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:48 (six years ago) link

I forgot to vote in this poll, but Jlin would have been top 10 for me if not top 5. She's so good.

so much good electronic music in this poll. listening now to this octo octa record it is so good

marcos, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:50 (six years ago) link

agree w/gr80 on Jlin

I think it's probably safe to say SW.'s brilliant The Album is not going to make it. Alas.

hey, I voted for it!

sleeve, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:50 (six years ago) link

that makes 10 in the top 77 for me now. was not expecting Jlin this high.

fffv, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:51 (six years ago) link

I don't know the right way to adore Jlin but for me it's about hearing the tracks as kind of undulating sonic and rhythmic compositions. I guess I listen to it the same way I listen to jazz.

ok I’ll try that, I like jazz

gr8080, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:55 (six years ago) link

this didn't have quite the impact on me that Dark Energy had - it wasn't a surprise - but it was still top 10 on my list. listening to this with the volume turned way up makes all the difference I think!

spotify

gr8080, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:56 (six years ago) link

Hey finally a record i voted for!

Siegbran, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:57 (six years ago) link

half of this album was an impressive follow through on their best material, but the other half sounded like a local Pink Floyd cover band

rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:57 (six years ago) link

really great album, probably voted it too low after listening to it again this week

omar little, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:58 (six years ago) link

kind of expected this to be #1 since we're on ilm and all

ciderpress, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:58 (six years ago) link

Ha that’s why I expect SZA

President Keyes, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:58 (six years ago) link

rob, i voted dan caesar for album as well. only four of us sadly.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:58 (six years ago) link

taken out of context this is a perfectly decent reunion album and I slightly preferred Ride's. seeing everyone go ape over this was very cognitively dissonant. I guess we all just needed Slowdive

imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:59 (six years ago) link

i am a falling ashes liker btw

ciderpress, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:00 (six years ago) link

great album that surpassed all expectations. Slomo and Don't Know Why especially are incredible

japanese bonus track 30th June is excellent too, definitely worth a listen if you haven't heard it https://youtu.be/gZiBd1iGC3o

ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:00 (six years ago) link

I would have lobbied for Freudian but it honestly didn't cross my mind that it wouldn't place!
has all the rnb placed in the top 20?

rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:00 (six years ago) link

well I’d say this is probably 10 places too high but I voted for it so more fool me. gazing at my shoes rn in mock shame

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:01 (six years ago) link

do you consider SZA r&B?

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:02 (six years ago) link

yes (without thinking about it too much)

rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:02 (six years ago) link

oh wait bad wording on my part...what I meant was: has all the rnb that has placed or will place been within the top 20?

rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:03 (six years ago) link

Aromanticism was in the 20s somewhere

Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:04 (six years ago) link

oh yeah, though everyone mostly talked about how it sounded like radiohead lol
