I find his comedy kind of smarmy, too, but is his political material really that smug? From the segments I've seen, it's pretty down to earth and grounded in common values and basic decency. Seemed much more approachable that like Colbert/Oliver/Meyers, guys who sorta sneer at anybody who doesn't share their worldview and mostly choir preach

xp is that guy funny, though? That line out of Andy Richter or Ed McMahon or whatever would have landed flat. Letterman used to run with this trope a lot, and more recently Chelsea Handler doubled down w/ a Mexican dwarf. I wouldn't find it so condescending if they gave these guys any good material, but basically they just nod and it brings the house down.
