do you consider SZA r&B?
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:02 (six years ago) link
yes (without thinking about it too much)
― rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:02 (six years ago) link
oh wait bad wording on my part...what I meant was: has all the rnb that has placed or will place been within the top 20?
― rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:03 (six years ago) link
Aromanticism was in the 20s somewhere
― Dan S, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:04 (six years ago) link
oh yeah, though everyone mostly talked about how it sounded like radiohead lol
― rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:05 (six years ago) link
does L'Rain count as r&b
― ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:05 (six years ago) link
forgot that one too, never mind...
― rob, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:07 (six years ago) link
In response to the question up thread what caught in the middle's chorus sounds like - it reminds me of no doubt - ex girlfriend
― kolakube (Ross), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:09 (six years ago) link
Kendrick is #1, come on.
Slowdive #5 is impressive. Great album.

I don't like that one. It just sounds like the theme music to a doctor drama.
― Evan, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:10 (six years ago) link
yeah it seems to be the contentious part of the record
― ciderpress, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:12 (six years ago) link
I didn't even like Slowdive the first time around
― sleeve, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:13 (six years ago) link
Jlin was my number one, though I think all of my top 3 were #1 at one point. I like it more than admire it, btw! I think she's amazing and brilliant and should be lauded, but I don't see her work as the revolutionary advancement of dance music*, I just think it's awesome.
*people who do think this seem to ignore the massive '90s influence on her sound and structures, maybe?
― ufo
I don't really think so, though maybe I'm influenced by POC friends being pissed off at the prevailing labelling culture of "it's made by a black woman so it's R&B". I think there are little bits of it in there but there's also a vanload of shoegazey psych...

Charly Bliss was my #1.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:24 (six years ago) link
I think the artist/album names put me off, but everything I've heard of this seems really lovely
― imago, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:25 (six years ago) link
i certainly agree with you on the first part
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:26 (six years ago) link
about as good as this sort of power pop gets
― ufo, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:27 (six years ago) link
kudos to ILM for voting Chastity Belt into the top 3
― Dinsdale, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:27 (six years ago) link
A huge amount of their appeal is nostalgia but they make my inner fifteen-year-old very happy.
― Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:28 (six years ago) link
Got halfway through 'Guppy' before giving up. Guess I should give this a second chance.
― Dan Worsley, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:28 (six years ago) link
Wow, most rockist top 10 in a while?
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:30 (six years ago) link
Amazing record.
― Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:31 (six years ago) link
enh only two of these are genuinely rock records imo (Slowdive, CB) xp
― Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:33 (six years ago) link
no, you're wrong, i'm a rockist now
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:33 (six years ago) link
Yeah but two of the top three are going to Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:34 (six years ago) link
Ha, well, those are #5 and #4.
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:34 (six years ago) link
and even then Charly Bliss has the temperament of a pop album imo
― Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:38 (six years ago) link
Many xps: another 'probably no.1 if I'd got my shit together' for Dawson, here. I think he's Arthur Machen with a guitar and a maniacal twinkle in his eye.
― The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:38 (six years ago) link
Loving 70s-ish progressive English folk has to count as rockist too but my post was p facetious tbf, cf. any post where I use the word "rockist" or "rockism". xps

― nxd, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:40 (six years ago) link
Love this album. Should have had it way higher on my list. Already sounds like a classic.

― Simon H., Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link
I followed the tracks rollout but I don't even remember Charly Blilss. Maybe something I skipped.
― _Rudipherous_, Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link
same!
also that's it for my ballot lol
oh yeah, susanne and kendrick, those are the last two
― flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:52 (six years ago) link
susanne and kendrick #2 and #1. party like it's 2015
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 February 2018 20:52 (six years ago) link
really good, a late cut from my ballot. strong songwriting all the way through. 'drew barrymore' deservedly got loads of attention and 'pretty little birds' is an amazing deep cut
