The thing that always happens is that I read the metal poll and always finds stuff for my main poll :) I can't make a ballot, but you're doing great work and I look forward to devouring the results!

silverfish, Friday, 2 February 2018 17:32 (six years ago) link

This is what was on my ballot. It was ranked, but this is not the exact order. I was making a lot of quick last minute decision, so I don't remember the actual ranking, but it wasn't that far from this:

Melkbelly – Nothing Valley
Dauwd – Theory of Colours
Ross From Friends – You’ll Understand
Camille – OUÏ
Charlotte Dos Santos – Cleo
Nadah El Shazly – Ahwar
Matthew Shipp Trio – Piano Song
Octo Octa – Where Are We Going?
Lowly – Heba
Sudan Archives – Sudan Archives
Justin Adams – Ribbons
Laura Marling – Semper Femina
Sunny Sweeney – Trophy
Paramore – After Laughter
Musica Secreta – Lucrezia Borgia’s Daughter
Ariwo – Ariwo
DJ Seinfeld – Time Spent Away from You
Thomas Demenga – J. S. Bach: The Six Cello Suites
Tomoko Sauvage – Musique Hydromantique
Kelly Moran – Bloodroot
Zsofia Boros – Local Objects
Auntie Flo – Soniferous Garden
Various Artists – Digital Zandoli 2
Jo Harman – People We Become

I've never really gotten into Bach's cello suites, but I think the timing was right for this particular ECM recording of them. I will have to go back to other performances, eventually.

Kelly Moran and Tomoko Sauvage go together to an extent. Kelly Moran is prepared piano (etc.?) which I thought was prepared harp, for some reason, so some interesting preparations there. Hints of the original gamelan inspiration for prepared piano. The Tomoko Sauvage album begins with metallophone (or synths that sound like metallophone).

And I like (some) lo-fi house a lot, whether it's cool or not.

Campaigning after the fact.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 2 February 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

Ariwo is something I found on lex's year end list. First impression was that it was kind of fourth-worldish, but with more of an authentic Latin horn sound. That turns out to be care of veterans from major Cuban groups:

Ariwo are a Cuban/Iranian four-piece focused on intersection between electronic and ancestral music.

The band brings together Iranian electronic composer POUYA EHSAEI and three of London’s most influential Cuban musicians; Irakere's Latin Grammy winning “percussion virtuoso”, HAMMADI VALDES; Sierra Maestra lead trumpeter, YELFRIS VALDES; and godfather of London’s Cuban scene, ORESTE NODA.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 2 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

Also Anna Wise, toward the bottom. Forgot that.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 2 February 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

Rudipherous those aren’t either synths or metallophones on the Tomoko Sauvage record, it’s far cooler than that:

Musique Hydromantique is the second solo album by Tomoko Sauvage archiving many years of her performance-based practice on the waterbowls – the natural synthesizer of her invention, composed with porcelain bowls filled with water and amplified via hydrophones (underwater microphones). While her first album Ombrophilia (released on and/OAR in 2009) was studio-recorded /composed work, Musique Hydromantique is about experimentation and improvisation with the environment – acoustics affected by the architecture, temperature, humidity and the human presence.

For more than ten years, Sauvage has been investigating the sound and visual properties of water in different states, as well as those of ceramics, combined with electronics. Water drops, waves and bubbles are some of the elements she has been playing with to generate the fluid timbre. Since around 2010, hydrophonic feedback has been an obsession for the musician – an acoustic phenomenon that requires fine tuning depending on the amount of water, a subtle volume control and interaction with the acoustic space.

faust apes (NickB), Friday, 2 February 2018 17:50 (six years ago) link

Cool. Well, the point always that they are metallophonish sounding, but that is interesting.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 2 February 2018 17:54 (six years ago) link

Hydrophonic feedback.

Excuse this self-indulgent post.

I've already posted my ballot upthread. But I would have voted for these LPs too if I'd had 50 rather than 25 slots on my ballot (and some more noms; not all of these were even nominated). I feel the need to acknowledge the excellence of a few of these. 2017 = a good year IMO.
