my uber-boss insists on communicating via a vlog every week and the vanity of it...i can read anything you need to say in 30 secs, how dare you insist that i sit thru 4 minutes of you empathising in front of a camera, i can literally feel the life being sucked out of me while i do it

Momentum aren't even working class and at a meeting somebody sung menacing Sting lyrics at poor embattled Claire. Thousands of people on council house waiting lists, they need 600 grand flats not ideological dogma blah blah.

calzino, Sunday, 4 February 2018 10:49 (six years ago) link

Someone with a 4-bed house in Muswell Hill isn’t working-class either, so what was her point?

kim jong deal (suzy), Sunday, 4 February 2018 10:56 (six years ago) link

getting into the class-ist jibe game is a useful distraction from specious pro-gentrification arguments, I suppose. Fuck these people!

calzino, Sunday, 4 February 2018 11:03 (six years ago) link

Of course the entire council should have been sacked after they came up with this (enormous image warning):

The Sunday Times are on a real tear re: Momentum and the ‘hard left’ atm.

kim jong deal (suzy), Sunday, 4 February 2018 11:11 (six years ago) link

Three cheers and all the alcohol to the advertising agency who made Haringey’s new corporate identity out of RED TAPE. If Claire Kober had final sign-off on that, she’s far more stupid than previously imagined.

kim jong deal (suzy), Sunday, 4 February 2018 11:14 (six years ago) link

Lmao, like that scene in yes minister where they're considering an ad campaign to promote the civil service- "how about, red tape... binds the nation together"

But doctor, I am Camille Paglia (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 4 February 2018 11:19 (six years ago) link

I wonder if it's the same jerk-off agency that did the Olympics logo.

i like its solid functional/institutional colour and bow-legged self-satisfaction:

mark s, Sunday, 4 February 2018 11:24 (six years ago) link

the 2015 PR week piece mocking the haringey -- including its price, £86,000 -- is oddly coy abt the agency that came up with it: https://www.prweek.com/article/1365407/haringey-council-rebrand-ridiculed-childish

One resident told a newspaper: "The logo looks like it was made by a child with a marker pen." Another said: "It looks like a sign for Nandos"

^^0/2 for resident critical skills there IMO

mark s, Sunday, 4 February 2018 11:29 (six years ago) link

"Haringey is more than just a place - it is an attitude"

well hackney is more than an attitude, it is a revolutionary morality and a fully effective praxis *sticks tongue out*

Meanwhile, this bill is being introduced next week:
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/theresa-proposes-new-law-would-11964577

Protesters who disrupted a speech by Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg would face up to 12 months in jail under a new law proposed by Theresa May.

On Tuesday the PM will unveil plans to create a new offence of intimidation in public life in a speech to mark 100 years of votes for women.

She will say: “British democracy has always been robust and oppositional but a line is crossed when disagreement mutates into intimidation.”

The new law, due to come in early next year, will also cover threats made on social media.

That Lewis / Williams fight is incredible!

It's good to see someone stand up to HL this way. My respect for ZW just increased a lot.

Leaving aside content, HL's contribution to the debate is deeply flawed as she turns it aggressive by saying 'spare me the piety', when ZW had not been engaging in a personal attack - then HL turns innocent and wonders why ZW is being unkind.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 4 February 2018 13:17 (six years ago) link

I find it odd that people now communicate ideas via speech, podcasts, videos -- I find writing and reading much quicker and more manageable. Messages from management via podcast seems a bad idea.

the pinefox, Sunday, 4 February 2018 13:30 (six years ago) link

Absolutely. I'd never force anyone to have to look at my face, either. That's some cold shit.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 4 February 2018 13:36 (six years ago) link

As a veteran of two different good-not-bad shows for Resonance, I think radio is potentially a great medium for conversations where you have to do your thinking out loud on your feet, which can be exciting to listen to, and has virtues that writing doesn't have: the problem with many podcasts is that the extremely terrible editing does nothing to improve the contributions of the hopelessly useless participants.

(Plus politics is less about live evolving thought than the deployment of stances: which gets old very fast…)

mark s, Sunday, 4 February 2018 13:44 (six years ago) link

mark s, Sunday, 4 February 2018 13:49 (six years ago) link

(ps by "on your feet" i actually mean "sat down", resonance has chairs)

mark s, Sunday, 4 February 2018 13:50 (six years ago) link

A tangent, but when I was 18, Dan Z Wilson and L Voag's Resonance shows incinerated my brain! Is there anything like that (but maybe even better) now?

imago, Sunday, 4 February 2018 13:53 (six years ago) link

I think there is a distinction between 'listen to people thinking and talking spontaneously in a conversation' and 'listen to someone enunciate position X, rather than read it silently yourself'.

I like the former fine when it is BBC radio 5 live discussion of soccer featuring Chris Sutton, Amy Lawrence or Andy Townsend.

the pinefox, Sunday, 4 February 2018 14:34 (six years ago) link

agreed! and communication vlogging from yr boss is very LONELY TYRANT imo:

my bf is a university lecturer, the website for his department has a video where the head of research reads aloud the webpage listing the various research strands and outputs from her department. It is basically a video of a very tired lady reading the website to you. I think this is about using innovative media approaches to deliver messages in a more dynamic way

so

plax (ico), Sunday, 4 February 2018 17:51 (six years ago) link

I just watch the bids with subtitles and no sound. The main irritation is it takes 4 or 5 minutes to communicate stuff I could read in 30 seconds. And she calls everybody in the organization a "family", until she got called on it by our union and now she uses " family/professional colleagues". A lot of this is a deliberate response to our previous regime of robot autocrats and semi-psycho bullies and god bless her I believe she's sincere but ffs. I'm hoping they make me redundant when the big cull comes in March

jacob rees-mogg has some, er, thoughts about the customs union decision:

When you take these models of what happens unless you stay in the customs union, they are all completely dependent on the inputs that you start with, and the inputs that they have started with are ones that lead to the conclusion that you have to stay in the customs union, other economists have used different inputs and looked at different modelling of global trade which says we’ll do extremely well by not being in the customs union.

And so do I think civil servants are politically biased, well I think the information the Treasury has produced is biased, but the blame must always be with ministers.

hope that clears things up

I may disagree with claims made on that march but not ONE of them wants to live in a system where 28m people have no cover. NHS may have challenges but I’m proud to be from the country that invented universal coverage - where all get care no matter the size of their bank balance https://t.co/YJsKBAHsw7
