I honestly kinda stopped paying attention after the Dundee one

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 14:16 (six years ago) link

when the game is great, I don't need side entertainment. plus my best friend's two year old was trying to get the adults to chase him around the room for a solid half hour and he was much more entertaining than commercials.

xxp even that stuff feels kind of exploitative to me - the Hyundai commercial where they inconvienence people to tell them that they contributed to 0.01% of someone's cancer treatment (Ford would've just let them DIE!!!) made me feel a bit queasy

though Budweiser rebranding their cans as "Water" was kind of a remarkable self-own

definitely seemed to be an uptick in "We support the rights of EVERY American to buy our product" this year. thanks Trump

Collingsworth getting frustrated at realizing he has no idea what a catch is was annoying.

at some pt i remember him saying something insanely dumb like, "this superbowl has been *as good as* the justin timberlake half time!"

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 14:44 (six years ago) link

haha that elicited a reaction at my party too.

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 14:45 (six years ago) link

Honorable mention goes to Al Michaels referring to the City of Brotherly Love as "Pittsburgh" at one point.

pplains, Monday, 5 February 2018 14:50 (six years ago) link

Don't make me miss Joe Buck, Al. That's not a situation either one of us wants.

pplains, Monday, 5 February 2018 14:51 (six years ago) link

I believe he also mentioned that Matt Patricia was leaving NE to coach the Pistons.

Moodles, Monday, 5 February 2018 14:55 (six years ago) link

i wasn't paying enough attention, and can't always tell myself, but folks who know better online are saying that despite collinsworth saying rpo 100 times he missed a bunch of actual rpos and half the time was calling regular play action passes rpos. really a bravura performance all round from him last night.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 14:55 (six years ago) link

Collinsworth was in the middle of his catch/no catch meltdown and said something like “he catches the ball runs for three steps — but is he a runner or a receiver...” and I wanted to throw the TV about the window

"what if the defender wasn't there?"

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 14:59 (six years ago) link

Yeah I went galaxy brain on that one

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 5 February 2018 14:59 (six years ago) link

to be fair I feel like very similar TDs were overturned during the regular season so I can't quite blame him there

frogbs, Monday, 5 February 2018 15:11 (six years ago) link

on the second one he clearly established the catch and ran, wasn't going to the ground in the process of making a catch.

they really gotta simplify the definition prior to next year. IE, "eye test" catches. still maintain the same rules regarding ground but get rid of the "control" clutter

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 15:25 (six years ago) link

feel like 5% of catches in the 70s wouldn't pass today's muster

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 15:26 (six years ago) link

I've said it before on the site, but luck and timing is a huge part to becoming a star in the NFL.

You think when he was a backup that anyone would have thought Kurt Warner was going to do what he did when Trent Green got hurt on the Rams?

Green was good, if that injury doesn't happen, I think the greatest story on turf still could have happened.

Same thing with Tom Brady, a lot of people thought Bill B. Was crazy to not go back to Bledsoe in prime of his career. They could have won it all with him too and needed Drew to bail them out in Pittsburgh.

Kind of hard to deny that Foles has the talent to succeed, but if you stick him in a total mess like whatever was going on with the Rams under Fisher - it might not.

earlnash, Monday, 5 February 2018 15:29 (six years ago) link

Not to derail the thread but luck and timing is the key ingredient in becoming a star at anything “tbrr” as the kids say

El Tomboto, Monday, 5 February 2018 15:35 (six years ago) link

still wondering what happens if Rodgers goes p1p1 to the 49ers and Alex Smith sits 3 years under Favre

frogbs, Monday, 5 February 2018 15:59 (six years ago) link

p sure AS would be institutionalized after 3 years of Favre sitting on his face

that was so bizarre i was like is he having a stroke, and then the officials took forever to do finish the review and i was like am i having a stroke maybe no one knows what a catch is maybe its unknowable

lag∞n, Monday, 5 February 2018 17:14 (six years ago) link

catch is a feeling

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 5 February 2018 17:15 (six years ago) link

i dont hate collingsworth at all but he had a rough game last night.

fgti spinner (Spottie), Monday, 5 February 2018 17:19 (six years ago) link

he was incorrectly thinking it might be the same as the overturned Steelers TD and lacked understanding of why that receiver was not a runner while this one was.

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 17:22 (six years ago) link

I like Collinsworth in general but yea, he was pretty bad last night

pretty amusing how he went from "By the rule, that is NOT a catch" to "isn't it incredible how Gronk sells the holding call better than anyone" in the span of like, two minutes

frogbs, Monday, 5 February 2018 17:42 (six years ago) link

k3vin k., Monday, 5 February 2018 17:44 (six years ago) link

the ertz one was clearly a catch and I couldn’t believe collinsworth was saying that and people actually thought it wasn’t. first could have gone either way prob but it did look like a catch to me, and the call on the field was a TD

k3vin k., Monday, 5 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

even after the Eagles WON and were CELEBRATING Collinsworth was writing love sonnets for the final Pats TD that never was

god he is the worst

the romo hype is real i love hearing him call a game

Mordy, Monday, 5 February 2018 17:49 (six years ago) link

they shoulda brought chucky in for one last hoorah

fgti spinner (Spottie), Monday, 5 February 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

feel like the thing romo has going for him is hes a departure from nfl culture as embodied by typical gruff ill tell you what tv guys

lag∞n, Monday, 5 February 2018 17:55 (six years ago) link

ertz call was much closer than ppl are making it out to be itt, i think because the slow motion view distorts it to make it look more like deliberate steps than momentum. i'd call it probably a catch, not definitely. but it was better for the patriots that it was ruled a TD or else philly could've sat on it with a fresh set of downs and run the clock down from the 1y.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 17:56 (six years ago) link

not that this in anyway excuses collinsworth's weird meltdown

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 17:57 (six years ago) link

he took three steps dove and reached out the ball the damn nfl has lost its mind lol

lag∞n, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:00 (six years ago) link

shd mention he also turned

lag∞n, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:01 (six years ago) link

its perfect how the sport thats the most rulesy has descended into this weird post modernism

lag∞n, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link

given the modern NFL they could've ruled that a touchback lmao

frogbs, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:03 (six years ago) link

btw has any decent explanation came out about why Malcolm Butler was benched? dunno if he would've been a difference maker but god damn, it's not like the Pats defense could've done any worse. they just needed one play.

frogbs, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link

xxxxxpost if it wasn't ruled a touchdown, it would have been an incomplete pass, and it would have then been 4th and 7 from the 11 yard line.

Hi diddley dee, hen fapper's life for me (Neanderthal), Monday, 5 February 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link

the catch thing is v difficult, i have a lot of sympathy for whoever is tasked with trying to sort that shit out. imo it just needs to be clearer, even if it becomes less "accurate". just say if it might be a catch then it's a catch and have done with it.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:06 (six years ago) link

oh yeah, you're right, i have lost the plot

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link

i hate it. if you cross the plain with possession whatever happens after shouldnt matter imo

fgti spinner (Spottie), Monday, 5 February 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link

let's just be happy the strip sack wasn't ruled an incomplete pass

mookieproof, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:09 (six years ago) link

yeah they really need to find a way to get closer to a looks like a catch definition f all this super slowmo replay where theyre trying to figure out if the ball is slightly moving around in a guys hands

lag∞n, Monday, 5 February 2018 18:09 (six years ago) link

I feel like the rule change after 1999 allowing part of the ball to touch the ground and still be a catch accelerated the expansion of the scope of "control" in the league. maybe they should revert to not letting the ball hit the ground, just say a catch is a catch if it looked like he caught it and it didn't hit the turf.

idk
