it's taken almost as a given that the nature of lebron & dan gilbert's relationship was going to lead to this destructive stalemate but he could have uhh just gone to one of the other 31 teams

no it's the internet rules that dan gilbert has to bend to bran's every whim because we like bron and don't like gilbert

k3vin k., Tuesday, 6 February 2018 17:20 (six years ago) link

ah yeah lebron should go to one of the two secret teams

well still at the end of the day lebron shouldn't lie to them and say he's coming back if he's not. he probably really isn't sure! the cavs i think have done ok under those circumstances... threading the needle with the kyrie thing was a defensible move tho they should have been way more hard on the celtics about the IT stuff.

the bigger problem is not what happened the past offseason but the stuff that happened before that -- the TT, shump, JR contracts etc -- that are a symptom of constantly mortgaging your future for lebron. idk how they were supposed to get around that except i guess to acquire better players.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 February 2018 17:28 (six years ago) link

the lesson of lebron's first stint in cleveland was that he should not be paired with a weak-willed organization. david griffin changed that momentarily and i guess maybe that was his biggest accomplishment even more so than any individual transactions. now the cavs are kinda back where they were in 2009.

Asked one of the #Cavs how much DeAndre Jordan could help right now and he said “Montell Jordan could help us right now.”

bet it was Wade!

bron even kinda fucked up miami which is not a weak willed org, basically when you sign bron gm bron comes along for the ride and theres no avoiding it, hes gonna sign a short deal bully u into signing his friends a-dog the coach owner and everyone else in the org and eventually leave you hanging

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link

but you might get a couple rings out of it

marcos, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 19:36 (six years ago) link

yeah its worth it no doubt

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 19:37 (six years ago) link

tho who know whats gonna happen his next stop as his salary grows and his legs age

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 19:38 (six years ago) link

Would Lebron for Ibaka and a first work? I feel like that would be good for everyone. Lebron can get a ring, and it doesn't really affect the timeline on any young Toronto guys. Toronto would be pretty dangerous with him, and it offers good marketing opportunities and a coach Lebron would respect.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 6 February 2018 19:44 (six years ago) link

cleve prob not looking to take back long term deals unless theyre getting a star

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 19:47 (six years ago) link

They would need to make a second move for sure:

"Whereas Griffin would consult with James and keep him informed of major roster decisions, that is no longer happening," Lloyd wrote. "James doesn't trust this front office, and there is no communication now between management and star player."

"The word is out that Dan is running things," a rival executive told Berger. "Frankly, that's where he's happiest and the role he's most comfortable in."

its over bron cmon

lag∞n, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 23:42 (six years ago) link

Lebron let Dan Gilbert take over basketball operations? He's slipping. Next thing you know he'll only be the second or third best player in the world.

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 6 February 2018 23:56 (six years ago) link

seems kinda obvious now that firing griffin was the first step in an intentional separation from bron, gilbert prob just a. sick of brons shit and b. doesnt want to pay the insanely expensive repeater tax to be warriors road kill, bullied by bron

he got his (ring)

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 00:24 (six years ago) link

forget it bron its the town

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 00:27 (six years ago) link

sort of in line with the rumor about him wanting to sell the time tho if i wanted to sell the cavs i would have been bending over backwards to get bron to re-up

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 00:27 (six years ago) link

prob doesnt matter too much either way, rich guys just want a team, but while having bron is awesome paying gigantic tax bills for years to come isnt

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 00:41 (six years ago) link

team valuation with signed bron vs. crippling luxury tax bills would be an analysis i'd actually be interested in.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:09 (six years ago) link

price of these teams seems mostly based on scarcity with some concern for the location thrown in, ie its more a status symbol than a business

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:15 (six years ago) link

the valuation disappears as soon as lebron goes tho. and not really able to able to capitalize on that if you're operating at a loss while he's there

, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:15 (six years ago) link

most recent forbes valuation for cavs has them #11 in the league at $1.2B. in 2013 they were #16 at $434M....franchise values have basically tripled in that period but i think there's still a lebron bump in there somewhere.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:24 (six years ago) link

i wldnt pay a cent over 1.1b

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:31 (six years ago) link

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kurtbadenhausen/2017/01/27/how-lebrons-cavaliers-lost-an-nba-high-40-million-last-season/#35f665e77699

take these numbers with a huge grain of salt obviously. i mean signing lebron to a long term deal you could probably leverage that into higher local tv contracts merch sales attendance w/e but don't think that's enough to overcome the luxury tax for a small market team like cleveland. maybe in nyc. otherwise its hard to realize on that increased valuation, you really only get the benefit when you sell the team

, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:31 (six years ago) link

so he is going to LA now is he

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:33 (six years ago) link

xp yeah that's the kind of stuff i'm curious about, along w/what gilbert's best approach would have been if he actually wanted to sell the cavs.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:34 (six years ago) link

its hard to figure where it makes sense for him to go, fielding a legit team while making room for a $35m contract is difficult, if he wanted to take a lot less then all sorts of things become possible

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:36 (six years ago) link

this is something i've really been struggling with--if he hates the cavs and if the lakers can't get their shit together what's plan c?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

bron should just throw a curveball and go to like the jazz

Clay, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

it's happening i have the proof

Clay, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:40 (six years ago) link

there it is

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:40 (six years ago) link

philly is the popular choice but idk if he would go to an east coast city that he has no connection to. for a guy obsessed with narrative it's just weird.

i think the clippers will at least get a meeting.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:40 (six years ago) link

if the cavs are willing to do a sign n trade, which one wld think they wld be, it gets a lil easier

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:41 (six years ago) link

i vote Toronto narrative is that the LeBron wins the first championship outside of the US beat that MJ

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:43 (six years ago) link

maybe bron buys the cavs and moves them to LA

Clay, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:43 (six years ago) link

toronto is currently destroying the celtics so maybe theyre good

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 01:44 (six years ago) link

if i'm a gm and ainge comes calling i straight up hang up the phone, remove from contact list and change my number, maybe even go as far as to change jobs.
