fwiw, i.e. not much, I knew they didn't want to be called that name on ilx, but I was under the impression it was because of someone stalking them and had no idea that using it would be deadnaming them until now (regardless of why, I wouldn't use it anyway, but just saying not everyone knows everything about everyone else here)

would you drink water straight out of a toilet

i am the most extreme supporter of drinking toilet water
i drink from the toilet and you must too
i drink from the toilet and you should too
i already do drink water from a toilet, all the time
i drink water from a toilet on occasion
i drank water from a toilet once
i could see myself drinking toilet water in all sorts of scenarios
i would drink toilet water in an emergency
i am not sure how i feel about drinking water from the toilet
i wouldn’t drink water from a toilet, no matter what
i wouldn’t drink water from a toilet, even if it cost me my life
i wouldn’t drink toilet water, even if it killed important people in my life, in addition
i would take the life of someone else before i drank any toilet water
i am the most extreme opponent of drinking toilet water

I haven't kept up with the thread but, if my example of a post-Adorno pop-hating pop writer is a fiction, to the point of being inconceivable, I'm pretty sure that actually supports the point I was getting at: I was NOT saying that poptimist writers always love (or should always love) the most popular music purely because it is popular; that is not a critique of poptimism that I would take seriously at all. I do think, though, that this critical approach is almost by necessity still less detached or sociologically-minded than "popularity itself is worth studying" seems to imply to me - it seems to require at the least a pretty significant appreciation of the basic aesthetic values of mainstream pop music (which does have a pretty clear and distinct set of aesthetic values at any given time). That definitely doesn't mean the poptimist has to love any given individual pop song but it will probably mean, statistically, that the poptimist will love a large number, or eventually become less actually-poptimist, for the same reasons you give. As such, I'm not convinced that it is radically different from 'rockism', which was also rooted in an appreciation for the aesthetic values of a Golden Era of Pop (and provided plenty of attendant political rationalizations for this preference).

Btw, I do know scholars who prefer other musics as listeners or musicians but who study pop because "popularity itself is worth studying" (or pragmatic in career terms). No one considers them poptimists afaik.

If that's directed at who I think it's directed at then they're neither Western European or North American.

can't speak for the motive of the poll starter anymore than I can speak for that behind Adam's performative male feminism but few if any of the quotes from that interview seem 'crazy', with the arguable exceptions of ones which are quoting someone else
