if you find yourself saying "it was kinda dumb but i liked it anyway.." after seeing a movie it probably belongs here.

vengeance/revenge seems to be 8 out of 10 action movies these days. it's the tookening of hollywood.

anyway, i watched a movie called THE TAKE last night which actually turns out to be a movie called BASTILLE DAY but americans don't know what a bastille is. other than american RUSH fans. it was kinda dumb but i liked it anyway. i like idris elba as badass. i don't really know richard madden because i haven't watched game of thrones but he was fine as a plucky american pickpocket. in real life he is from Elderslie, Renfrewshire.

i also started watching MECHANIC:RESURRECTION last night but i fell asleep. i'll get back to it.

i tried to watch a movie where scott eastwood steals a vintage ferrari but it was so bad my 12 year old kid didn't even want to watch it and he's 12 and in love with "supercars"! so, don't watch that one.

also, i finally saw JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 and i didn't love it. but i didn't hate it. but i do kinda get why people like the idea of a fancy world-wide secret society of bad people who follow certain RULES. people are drawn to rules for some reason. and protocol. and ceremony. just ask game of thrones.

I showed the trailer for this one to my wife and she refused to watch it with me, but I'll get around to it.

During the first half of THE HOLLOW POINT I kept wondering why this movie isn't as well known as NO COUNTRY or HELL AND HIGH WATER -

- but the second half answered that question very thoroughly. McShane and Belushi are having fun, though.

i really liked THE EQUALIZER. one of my fave t.v. shows back in the day so it's my kinda movie adaptation. wish the old show was on hulu. and i'm glad there will be a sequel to the movie. be kind of a waste of the title to NOT have an EQUALIZER II. i do love antoine fuqua. it's a stately vengeance movie. it might not be up there with the Fuqua fineness of TRAINING DAY, TEARS OF THE SUN, SHOOTER, BROOKLYN'S FINEST, or OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, but it's a good one. i could have watched it all day. bask in denzel as indestructible violence hero.

John Wick isn't about rules it's about gun kata

Both films totally drag when they get too into the "worldbuilding" of assassin club at the expense of action

The Equalizer, is it ... graphic?

mick signals, Thursday, 8 February 2018 22:09 (six years ago) link

most of the violence is of the super-fast modern action variety. people get shot really fast and bloodlessly. but there are a couple of gruesome moments.

scott seward, Thursday, 8 February 2018 22:21 (six years ago) link

Thanks. That bloody hammer he's cleaning above I'll guess is from one of the latter.

actually, its an off camera hammer beatdown! i know, what are the odds?

They have excellent villains, is the thing.
As does Small Town Crime, which channels the late Elmore Leonard better than most other movies:

equalizer was unsubtle but 'stately' is a good description and you just cant argue with denzel going ice-cold when they turn down their chance

fits in with jack reacher imo (maybe a point lower on the scale), standard product but delivered with a bit of care. plot either isnt there at all or came in a flatpack, characters likewise, but really nicely done, shot, hits its beats.

rainswept stormy climax of equalizer 2 has only grown in my estimation since I posted here, it’s grate

tonight, e.r. indoors permitting a second in a row (unlikely)

it could charitably be viewed as high concept stuff tho, right?

what if a-team, but one

what if halloween, but good guy

what if wick, no dog

what if obsessive compulsive disorder, but it makes u a better killer

it’s hard to imagine anyone but denzel pulling off such a delicate balancing act, the whole enterprise really relies entirely on his star power

i'm w/ tato, super hot AND weird!! (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 08:54 (five years ago) link

halloween but good guy is otm, really - there’s not really much tension in whether denzel is ever in any danger, the real pleasure is watching him mete out unflinching bursts of violence justice

i mean look i like ben affleck just fine but the accountant is balls and really there's f all difference but swapping in denzel

the thing with him not using guns but only intermittently whats that about
