the knicks hatred of hernangomez is baffling to me

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:23 (six years ago) link

for a while it seemed like they were moving toward a low key professional reffing but now everythings gone off the rails

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link

Some in-game analyst said NBA refs are in rebuilding mode now. Never occurred to me that would be a thing (been watching over 30 yrs and it's never even been posited before), but yeah makes sense.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:26 (six years ago) link

boggles my mind how there can only be like 6 people on Earth at any given time who are really good at being refs

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:27 (six years ago) link

truly weird. there's a lot to it, though. way more than just making the correct call. hard to be empathetic and a hard ass at the same time.

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:34 (six years ago) link

haha

Within 12 hours, Kristaps lost his season and had a friend traded. Strange but true: some coaches & team officials didn't like that Willy and KP would regularly communicate by speaking Spanish. No bueno. https://t.co/K29OUoIoe8

wtf

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

some of the anonymous quotes ive heard from refs are pretty wild, like real hatred for the players, not good

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

if i was a ref i'd probably hire an assassin to handle draymond, for the (ref) culture

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

yeah i mean im not saying its not understandable lol

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:40 (six years ago) link

the refs seem to like dray though, at least enough to not tech him up on every call

ciderpress, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:46 (six years ago) link

ha

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:51 (six years ago) link

dray is truly a master of boundary pushing

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:53 (six years ago) link

seems like there's a cycle of "this player is disrespecting me! And uh yeah disrespecting the Game too I guess, sure. I must put him in his place" --> "this ref thinks people pay to see HIM. I need to put him in his place!" --> "this player is disrespecting me!". I don't know how you get both sides to settle down other than just getting quality refs, which as Spottie mentioned depends on having a rare personality type.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:04 (six years ago) link

he def called the woman ref a "fucking bitch" last night but they had been separated by that point

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:05 (six years ago) link

haha capitalizing Game there reads like I'm talking about the rapper

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:05 (six years ago) link

maybe they shd introduce some sort of warning tech thats not as punitive but tells the player to hey cool it buddy or youre getting a real one, and then also some way that makes the players feel like their complaints are being herd not sure what that wld be, especially since a lot of it is just in the heat of the moment and they players dont really want to like file some grievance abt a call

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link

ultimately the problem is that the refs have no real power. they can T guys up but nobody is going to sympathize with them. they can let the league deal with it but five figure fines and one or two game suspensions isn't going to stop anybody. the players know this so they dog out the refs... the refs just kind of have to take it. i was listening to someone say that the old refs commanded respect and navigated the game and all that yada yada which is prob true but to the the solution -- expecting the players to not be dicks -- is not ever gonna happen so \(o_O)/

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:17 (six years ago) link

Lou Williams' new three-year deal with the Clippers will include a team option on the third year, league sources tell ESPN.

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) February 7, 2018

giving a 31 year old a three year deal off of one hot month is the telltale sign of a messed up organization

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:19 (six years ago) link

gotta see how much its for but yeah the shape doesnt look good

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:22 (six years ago) link

feel like for a few years there was some success in getting players to not complain as much but now its back and in a worse more aggressive form, which prob has something to do with the officiating being worse and there being lots of newer refs who dont have experience in how to deal with players

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:22 (six years ago) link

maybe if the refs would like, you know, look at the players and address them directly instead of being all sheepish and walk away/turn their backs. like draymond got popped in the mouth and was bleeding pretty badly but the foul (not even sure it was a foul) was really hard to see in real time so maybe she could've just said "hey sorry I totally missed that, didn't have a good angle" or w/e

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:23 (six years ago) link

yeah that sort of thing wld go a long way im sure, the players are going to be super emotional its just in the nature of competition the refs have to be the ones to maintain their cool, but also sometimes the players are trying to have a conversation about a call when the ref is trying to currently do a different task at their job and often when the call was obvs good so its a pretty high stress situation

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:26 (six years ago) link

maybe the refs shd be trained to say heres what i think happened i mightve missed it we review the whole game and if theres a certain play you want looked at contact the office and well get back to you with our findings

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:28 (six years ago) link

and maybe instead of fining players for disrespecting refs the league shd make them take the ref out to a fancy restaurant and be nice to them

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:28 (six years ago) link

outward bound weekend retreat!

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:30 (six years ago) link

every ref should be a M.D. of Psychiatry imo.

trust falls

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

i don't think the ref saying "hey sorry i didn't see it" was going to stop draymond last night... and the fact that it wasn't a foul wasn't going to either

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

lol dray and cp3 at dinner w lauren holtkamp

this is a rly good idea. i bet most guys would rather pay $25,000 then have to spend an hour with the ref at dinner & incidents would decrease. and if they did they would prob come to a greater understanding about each other. i'm fully on board.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:32 (six years ago) link

also make the players ref a game between the refs

ha exactly my thinking

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link

refs warn players to cool it all the time. if dray and others are pushing boundaries, they should expect to be pushed back. maybe it sucks for your team to get teched up several times a game, but I don't blame the refs. I blame players who think they don't need to change their behavior, because the fine$ that come with a technical are low enough they don't mind paying for the privilege of shitting the bed.

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:37 (six years ago) link

i am very mild mannered but probably the maddest ive ever been was at refs during some city league games years back. i was in one league that would require every player to be part of the ref crew for at least one game during the season, and it 100% changed my perspective. It was one of the hardest things i've ever done for real!

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:38 (six years ago) link

lmao

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:39 (six years ago) link

there was a good tv segment were rodney harrison participated in ref training camp for a day, at one point he got really stoked abt a big hit and was like DAMN then realized he was reffing the game and was all o shit

haha

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:40 (six years ago) link

not lmao'ing at the notion (always good idea to get feuding sides to experience what it's like to be on the other side) so much as the image of teams of older people in ref outfits hoopin while super tall young guys in shorts and jersey patrol the perimeter w/whistles

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link

that's how i read your lmao

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link

i think maybe 3 techs per game wld be better, 1st one is a warning nothing happens except the stoppage of play, then the next two are just how the techs are now, allows for more of a progression and the 1st one is less punitive

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:48 (six years ago) link

1st tech, no pb&j for you. 2nd, no social media. 3rd, no card games. 4th, you have to ref a 1on1 game 'Sheed vs Rodman

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:56 (six years ago) link

otm

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 19:02 (six years ago) link

1st one is a warning nothing happens except the stoppage of play

Play stops but nothing happens? What's the freaking point? At least attach a fine. And while we are at it, fines should reflect a percentage of a player's salary, so the max contract players and rookie minimum players are put on a equal footing.

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 19:13 (six years ago) link

its just like the illegal defense warning

raptors fielding their best team this year but everyones ignoring them from being burned before

Raptors are the only team in the top 5 in both offensive & defensive efficiency.
Over last 40 years, 35 teams have been top 5 in both...
31 won a playoff series.
27 made the conf. finals.
14 made The Finals.
11 won the title.
