a tribute to a comedian just feels like a new level of baudrillardian nightmarishness to me

there's a comedy club opened up down the road from my work, which set me off on this quest, cos one of the first posters they had was a "comedy impressionist" dressed up as Harry Hill except he obviously didn't have the budget to get his shirts made with oversized collars

i’m trying to understand the personal circumstances and the mindset that would lead someone to get on stage and imitate not just a comic but a particular comic’s entire set and i just... can’t

let alone the thinking of a member of the public who sees an ad for a peter kay tribute act and thinks ‘that looks good, that does’ and pays actual money to go and see it

at least with tribute bands you might be seeing a facsimile of a band you would have no hope of actually seeing in person, but it's not as if there's any shortage of Peter Kay

might do an "Occasions when you need a Scotsman" poll as a spin-off

if you go to see the bootleg beatles or whoever at least you get to hear songs that have stood the test of time that you will never hear the original lineup which produced them play live ever again

but jokes don’t usually work that way, right? generally they lose their ability to surprise and amuse you with repetition, so (imo) there are only a very few standups i could stand to watch do their sets more than a couple of times, no matter how much i enjoyed them

so why would you go and see a standup tribute tell jokes you already know? I DON’T UNDERSTAAAAAAND

(this is also why i fucking hate ‘funny’ songs - no matter how beautiful the melody or whatever you’re still listening to the same punchlines over and over, which is like rubbing your exposed brain against a cheesegrater to me)

random thought: I might see paying a comedian to perform selected bits by other stand-up comics whom I can no longer stomach for reasons of sex crimes, politics, etc.

But there’s plenty of decent new jokes every day so that just seems like throwing good money after bad

Original after dinner comedians might just be shit, at least they're not "Comedy Dining Shows" (see Only Fools, Father Ted etc. etc.)

all this is otm and yet it's always seemed to me that comedy tribute acts are an untapped market. they probably scorned the first tribute band (Bootleg Beatles?) and now there are several ersatz Slipknots

yeah but i would go and watch SlipNOT in a heartbeat whereas Lee Lard is sad man

as i said upthread tho, there are bands whose work i'll probably listen to until i die but just aren't around to see live anymore, because they've retired, split up or died, so i can see the appeal of going to see a tribute who have put a lot of work into recreating their sound

(hell, the bootleg beatles even play songs which the actual beatles never played live iirc)

but jokes just don't work like music! who in their right mind listens to the same jokes over and over again? who are these maniacs who would go to see someone who looks a bit like a comedian whose work they enjoy imitate their jokes? it's disgusting savagery of the highest order

A flat I lived in we found a couple of directories of variety acts, 80s probably, simultaneously two of the most hilarious and heartbreaking publications I've ever seen.

Some of the acts looked so terrible you were in fits of laughter while, at the back of your mind, was the realization that they'd probably already hung themselves from a curtain rail in a motel outside Giggleswick.
