i actually bought 11 of these when they came out which is a pretty high percentage for me and a pitchfork list. (outkast, massive attack, air, boredoms, madonna, gang starr, mercury rev, hole, mark hollis, sunny day real estate, rza.)

i would still play boredoms, mark hollis, and sunny day in 2018. don't need to hear the rest. though mezzanine will always be super cool. i didn't know a single person on earth who was excited about the release of the mark hollis record other than me at the time.

expected tori amos to not be on it; did not expect fiona apple to not be on it

From the Choirgirl Hotel is my favorite Amos but I've only seen fervent fandom on this board and FB.

I think I asked for (and got) CDs of the RZA, the Beck and Chef Aid for Christmas of 1998

i never listened to that rza album after i bought it. i mean i played it once or twice. i had high hopes at the time.

on the other hand, i listened to that Juvenile album last week.

Black Star...has aged very poorly tho

I mean, it doesn't sound very much in lockstep with where hip-hop is right now, but it's still a good late night record

Moment of Truth doesn't sound lockstep either but I'd definitely choose it over Black Star

good list overall. 400 degreez is way too low, obviously. Come on, it's definitely better than the sixth or seventh best Sonic Youth album. But I'm glad they made room for Maxwell, Big Pun, Devin The Dude, and Mark Hollis.

That’s why I mentioned it. Both of those albums were a bit throwback even at the time, but I think MOT sounds a lot better

I don't remember the 3-4-$1 deal, but Music Blvd also had a $10 coupon with no minimum purchase so I got a ton of free $8-$9 things.

Yeah this is a solid list, would quibble with the order but can't think of too many personal favourites they've missed - DJ Quik, Tori Amos (like katherine says this isn't surprising) and on the emo side, Jets to Brazil.

The idea that the Blackstar album has aged worse than the majority of the list is pretty laughable.

funny story: in 1999 i went to the rap record store to buy records and i went to pay and to my complete shock Guru was behind the counter (there for an in-store or something) and i was like hey man how you doin' and he was like hey dude what's up and i was totally afraid that he was gonna make fun of me for only buying the slim shady LP and a company flow album. he didn't though. he was nice.

i listened to brand nubian's 1998 album last week. i had completely forgotten that it existed until i got the CD at a record show recently. it really resembles its cover musically. not very memorable.

98 was the best year for rap, i dont think that tribe album would crack my top 30 rap albums for that year and that Bobby Digital album is horrible wtf.

Hip hop fans who were actually there at the time saw the Bobby Digital album for what it was: a complete and total disappointment. Borderline wack.

Also, xpost to scott: the best song the Black Eyed Peas ever did was the b-side to 'Fallin' Up.' It was called 'Le Rox' and only ever came out on the promo 12" single, I think.

I was just thinking about the Bobby Digital record the other day because it's one of maybe a dozen CDs that I never got around to ripping to MP3. I probably only listened to it once or twice and don't really remember anything bad, just disappointing. I was also let down by the Love Movement and Moment of Truth but I've at least listened to them in the last 20 years.

yeah otm, but uh, bobby digital REALLY shouldnt be on that list. you could maybe defend everything else or at least shrug them off.

A creative vocabulary saves some grace, but the "pussys," "bitches" and "motherfuckers" far outweigh the "tighter than prescription bottles" and "Mr. Potatohead Ore Ida deep fried krinkle cuts."

Like even if they put Goodie Mob and M.O.P. in there, there'd still be post-ethan dudes going "wow, no Fat Pat or Mac Dre, east coast bias much?!

Dr. Octagon is a weird omission esp cuz it's a big part of the indie-rock friendly rap canon and a way better "eccentric" rap album pick than Bobby Digital

i just didn't think that anyone even still listened to the bobby digital album. it really was a bummer at the time. such a promising cover.

m.o.p. would have been a fine choice. or redman. redman and styles of beyond. played those a ton. not even the best redman album but still lots of fun.
