I love this and have played it probably avg twice a week for 3 years, I'm a bit the same about the screen prompts, I can only play some of the songs without them, but I've definitely improved quite a bit since I started it. I have a bad habit of not slowing down fiddly bits and just skipping them or attempting to keep up and basically just playing random notes, because I usually just put it on non-stop play mode.

But before I started this I couldn't use a pick at all, and mainly just chords. I've still got some way to go but I kept breaking the A & D strings regularly, like it seemed I broke the D string every couple of weeks, I assume because I was hitting them too hard with a pick because you have to play pretty hard with just your fingernails to get the same volume, and lately I haven't broken those strings for ages. I've jinxed it now though.

i bought this last year, played it a bit, then went back to solo noodling and recording aimless noize jams for my own amusement

i need to go back and get into it properly cuz it was a lot of fun - playing on mac via steam here so no latency issues for me thankfully, my only impediment is my own ineptitude

One of the main things that seem to bug people who already play guitar a bit is that the default setting for string order is the opposite to how guitar tabs are done online, but you can swap that in settings, I had to do that because I couldn't get used to the strings being upside down.

Have y'all employed the color-coded strings they sell, and if so have you found them helpful? Thinking I might finally get that cable and some strings next payday and find out just how terrible I am at manipulating a musical instrument.
